The balance of sleep and wakefulness, and its correct timing, relies on a finely tuned system, which is referred to as homeostasis. If too much overloads this system in favour of one state versus the other, such as staying up late, having fragmented sleep, sleeping in at the weekends, or sleeping at inappropriate times relative to your body clock , the system will try and compensate to redress the balance.

One idea might be that a migraine attack may actually represent one of these balancing mechanisms, an extreme and abnormally over-compensating one. If for example you are sleep deprived, suffering a migraine may actually force you to keep still and lie down in the dark, in the hope of trying to sleep as a way of ridding yourself of the migraine.

Having too much sleep may also have the opposite effect and keep you awake with a migraine on subsequent nights. Both scenarios may be a way of trying to redress both sleep pressure and circadian alignment and keep the system in equilibrium.

How Are Migraines Treated

Migraine headaches are chronic. They cant be cured, but they can be managed and possibly improved. There are two main treatment approaches that use medications: abortive and preventive.

  • Abortive medications are most effective when you use them at the first sign of a migraine. Take them while the pain is mild. By possibly stopping the headache process, abortive medications help stop or decrease your migraine symptoms, including pain, nausea, light sensitivity, etc. Some abortive medications work by constricting your blood vessels, bringing them back to normal and relieving the throbbing pain.
  • Preventive medications may be prescribed when your headaches are severe, occur more than four times a month and are significantly interfering with your normal activities. Preventive medications reduce the frequency and severity of the headaches. Medications are generally taken on a regular, daily basis to help prevent migraines.

Should You Eat Carbs To Overcome Fatigue

Carbohydrates made up less than 5% of calories in traditional Inuit cultures that depended on hunting for survival. However, the Kitavan tribe in the South Pacific had near year-round access to fresh fruits and vegetables, so nearly 70% of their calories came from carbohydrates.

As I mentioned earlier, if youre of mixed European ancestry, your ancestors likely got about 30% of their calories from carbohydrate sources. But lets keep in mind that their carbohydrate intake would vary greatly depending on the seasons .

During the late summer and early autumn, your ancestors would likely have consumed more than 30% of their daily calories from carbohydrates. This would occur because fruits and vegetables would be plentiful. But in the late fall, winter, and early spring, there would be minimal carbohydrates available.

In these times, your ancestors would likely have subsisted on high fat, low carbohydrate or ketogenic style diets. During these months, your ancestors carbohydrate intake would be well below 30% perhaps even as low as 5% similar to traditional Inuit First Nation cultures.

For optimum health, do as your ancestors did. Align your diet to mimic theirs. This is how you beat fatigue.

Rheumatoid Arthritis And Fatigue

Rheumatoid arthritis , a type of inflammatory arthritis, is another cause of excessive fatigue. Because joint damage can result in disability, early and aggressive treatment is the best approach for rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs

Migraine medications fall into two major categories.

  • The first contains drugs that abort or stop migraines from progressing once they begin. The earlier these drugs are used in a migraine attack, the better they work.
  • The second category contains drugs that prevent migraines from happening.

Over-the-counter migraine medications used to address pain include analgesics, NSAIDS, and caffeine, including:

  • Naproxen
  • Ibuprofen
  • Acetaminophen
  • Or combinations of these

One drawback to using analgesics and NSAIDs is that taking them daily can make headaches worse due to medication overuse.

Prescription drugs used to provide relief from pain include

While analgesics, NSAIDs, and narcotics relieve pain, they don’t address the underlying physiology — primarily the dilation of blood vessels in the brain. Two classes of migraine drugs are:

  • ergotamines and
  • triptans.

Ergot alkaloids — such as ergotamine tartrate and dihydroergotamine mesylate — are potent drugs that constrict blood vessels. Because nausea is a possible side effect of these migraine drugs, some people take ergotamines in combination with other drugs to prevent nausea.

What Else Can I Do To Prevent Migraines

While there are no sure ways to keep from having migraine headaches, here are some things that may help:

Eat regularly and do not skip meals.
