Why do I have a headache every day?

To say, I have a headache, is one thing. To say, I always have headaches, is another. The latter is often more concerning.

Most people get headaches from time to time. They usually go away with or without any treatment. Frequent headaches are much less common and much more serious. They can disrupt your work or personal life. They can also be a sign of an illness or injury.

Unfortunately, many people dont seek help because they think they can cope on their own, says Christy Jackson, MD, a neurologist and director of the Donald J. Dalessio Headache Center at Scripps Clinic. They may rely on over-the-counter pain relievers instead of getting medical help. In some cases, headaches are not properly diagnosed.

Consult with your primary care doctor if your headache symptoms get worse or occur more often despite treatment at home. Your doctor may refer you to a headache specialist.

No one should go through life suffering from chronic headaches, Dr. Jackson says. Not when they are treatable.

Solutions For Frequent Headaches Everyday

When only occasional headache attack and then disappear then it does not need medical attention. But on the contrary, if the headaches are often attacked repeatedly and difficult to lose so make sure to consult a doctor immediately. Including also if you experience the following things then try to see the doctor as soon as possible.

  • Headache attack twice or more per week.
  • Every day consume reliever or pain-reducing headaches.
  • Used very high doses exceeding the rules of use.
  • A headache is getting worse.
  • Stiff neck, fever, convulsions, numbness, blurred vision or trouble in speaking.
  • Head injury.

You Drink Too Much Caffeine

Caffeine causes vasoconstriction in your blood vessels, meaning they get a little narrower. If you drink coffee or other caffeinated drinks every day, your body gets used to it, Dr. Hutchinson explains. So when you skip it one day, your blood vessels don’t become constricted and can make your head hurt. It becomes a vicious cycle, slugging back a mug to find relief, and just further deepening your need for caffeine. Additionally, the Mayo Clinic says that adults can safely consume up to 400 milliliters of caffeine per day , butkeeping in mind that everyones tolerance is differentafter that, your body might begin to rebel.

Fix it:“It’s unrealistic to tell all headache patients to avoid caffeine,” Dr. Hutchinson says. Instead, she recommends moderationa maximum of two caffeinated drinks in one dayto avoid that withdrawal headache when you go without.

Understanding What Causes Headaches And Finding Treatments To Relieve The Pain

Nearly everyone has had headache pain, and most of us have had it many times. A minor headache is little more than a nuisance that’s relieved by an over-the-counter pain reliever, some food or coffee, or a short rest.   • Intractable Headache;Any headache, including migraine, that doesn’t respond to treatment.
  • Occipital Neuralgia;This disorder causes pain in the back of the head and upper neck.

Lack of sleep ruins everything. It can expand your waistline, make you crave junk food, hurt your memory, and make you cranky . But it turns out that chronic insomnia can also cause chronic headaches. “Unrested muscles can cause tension headaches and insomnia releases stress hormones, both of which trigger headaches,” Mikhael says.

Using Meditation To Control Everyday Headaches

People who suffer from migraines and tension headaches every day are far more likely to use alternative medicine than those who dont. Meditation seems most successful, but theres also not much else that has substantial scientific support.

Meditation can be very effective, Mauskop says. Weve noticed significant improvements in patients who take on meditation as a part of their treatment. If youre getting headaches every day, consider starting meditation.

A 2014 study showed that getting migraines or tension-type headaches every day can lead to feeling stressedwonder why! Whats more, the headache itself can cause stress, which in turn adds to the pain of the headache . Exercise can effectively treat stress, but you probably wont feel like going on a five-mile run while youre nursing a bad headache every day, so try to get your exercise in before the headache strikes.

In addition to treating stress, exercise can reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches and migraines,according to the American Migraine Foundation. The key word here is regular, so commit to a certain amount of exercise per day and dont let anything interfere with that time.

As I write this, a dull headache presses into the space above my left eye. The same headache visited me yesterday, and the day before that. In fact, for most of the last year, Ive had a headache every day, all day. Though its now manageable I can write with it, after all for the previous 12 months, my headaches took over my life. They were all I thought about. They became who I was.

On the good days, the pain was just a mild throbbing sensation. Other times, there was a general sense of an ever-tightening pressure. On the days when I couldnt get out of bed, it felt like someone was tightening screws into the sides of my head and pounding a hammer above my left eye. The pain never went away, unless I was asleep. So I slept a lot, as much as my body would let me.

Ive always gotten more headaches than the average person the mild, treat-with-an-over-the counter-pain-medication-and-theyll-go-away type. But following a drawn-out viral infection that left me sneezing and feeling run-down for weeks, I started to get headaches every day, and they were more painful than usual.

The Importance Of Achieving A Specific And Accurate Headache Diagnosis

Getting a specific headache diagnosis that is accurate is very important because it will have a major influence on matching your treatment plan to the type of headache and severity of illness. Diagnosis influences the treatment plan by directing the type of medical tests that are run, type of medications recommended and long-term management goals you and your practitioner select. More importantly, matching your beliefs about your headache type to an accurate diagnosis is crucial, as otherwise test recommendations, medications and long-term behavioral management adherence is likely to decrease or not be started at all.

For example, the plan of care will be very different for headaches diagnosed as sinusitis than for headaches diagnosed as migraine. However, if you believe your headaches are due to sinus headache, while your practitioner believes you have migraineresolving the differences so you can comfortably put recommendations into action is critical. For those with chronic migraine, a very different treatment regimen is likely to be offered than for those with less frequent episodic migraine.

Headache diagnoses and treatment plans are made on the basis of:

  • Accurate total of any days with headache in an average month and accurate duration of headache with or without treatment. This identifies the likely headache syndrome.
  • Pain characteristics such as location, severity, pain quality, and response to routine physical activity.
  • Seek Help For Serious Sudden Headaches

    Although most headaches are not serious and will go away on their own, it’s important to recognize when headache pain could be a sign of a larger issue.

    Stephen D. Silberstein, MD, director of the Jefferson Headache Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and past president of the American Headache Society, advises: “If your headache is bad, new, or changing, see somebody.”

    When To See A Doctor

    If you have any type of headaches consistently, its important to speak with your primary care physician so they can help create a treatment plan or refer you to a specialist.

    “If your headaches are increasing in frequency or severity, or are interfering with your usual activities, see a doctor,” says Dr. Andiman.

    Seek immediate medical attention if youre experiencing the worst headache youve ever had, lose vision or consciousness, have uncontrollable vomiting, or if your headache lasts more than 72 hours with less than 4 hours pain-free.

    Most people get headaches once in a while but its not normal to have a headache every day. Make an appointment with your primary care provider to get checked. In the meantime its a good idea to keep a diary of your headaches. Write down when you notice them, if anything seems to bring them on, the location of the pain , how long they last, whether they are throbbing, time of day , nausea or vomiting, if you take any medicine for them such as ibuprofen, family history of headaches,;etc.

    There are many different kinds of headaches including tension headaches and migraine headaches. Many times headaches can be caused by a trigger .;Headaches can very rarely be caused by a serious condition such as high blood pressure or a tumor. Your health care provider will listen to your story and;may suggest that you try to avoid triggers, lower your stress level,; exercise, and avoid daily ibuprofen.

    So Thats Why I Get A Headache Every Afternoon

    In the second part of my blog post series on headaches, Im going to discuss a different type of headache tension headaches. Unlike migraines, tension headaches have some very distinct and specific characteristics that make them much easier to diagnose. However, as I discussed in my post on migraines, in order to overcome headaches and achieve lasting relief, the treatment you receive must match the type of headache that someone youre suffering. You cant treat a migraine headache and a tension headache the same way and expect the same results because they have distinct causes and mechanisms for producing their unique headache symptoms. So lets talk about tension headaches and what you can do to start taking some steps toward freedom from these painful and nagging headaches.

    Unlike pharmacological management, there is an abundance of evidence for manual therapy , aerobic exercise, and exercises aimed at improved head, neck, and shoulder range of motion and strength . Several studies have done direct comparisons between usual care with non-pharmacological care and have found non-pharmacological care to be far superior in both short-term and long-term outcomes . In fact, one study compared usual care to self-management, and found more significant improvements in the self-care group . So you would be better off sticking it out by yourself than taking medication for your tension headachesyikes!

    Young People Are At Risk Too

    It isn’t just older individuals who should be alert to a bad headache: According to an article published in February 2020 in the journal Stroke, 10 to 15 percent of all strokes occur in people ages 18 to 50.

    If youre having trouble figuring out why you get headaches every day, try tracking information about your diet, water intake, and stress levels.

    You might also add sleep time, exercise, and other factors that could potentially play a role in headache development. Be consistent; while keeping a diary might feel pointless at first, the information could prove vital when youre looking for ways to treat the issue.

    What Makes Your Headache Better

    • As mentioned above, dehydration or low blood sugar can cause headaches in the morning, so if having a meal seems to resolve your symptoms, thats a likely culprit.
    • If coffee is what gives your headache relief, then it may be caused by caffeine withdrawal.
    • Migraines are sometimes treatable with rest and by minimizing noise and bright lights.
    • If you are on medication, stopping may ease the headache. Since you are likely on your medication for a specific reason, its extremely important to never stop taking any medicine without your doctors approval.

    Dont Fret Just Yet The Pounding Pain In Your Head May Be Annoying But It Doesnt Necessarily Indicate A Bigger Problem

    There it is again the throbbing in your dome. If youre bothered by frequent headaches, you may be concerned that you have a more serious condition, such as a brain tumor or an aneurysm. And while those and other dangerous conditions can be , its likely that your pain is primary. In other words: Its probably not the result of another condition.

    Unfortunately, doctors dont know what causes most headaches. According to some estimates, only 10 percent of headaches have a known cause. But there are contributing factors that can trigger chronic headaches, such as:

    • Sensory triggers such as bright lights, loud noises and pungent smells
    • Stress

    Chronic headaches can also be linked to other disorders, including depression, anxiety, sinus infections, allergies and temporomandibular joint dysfunction, also known as TMJ. In order to figure out your headache pattern and identify your triggers, you may want to keep a headache diary to share with your doctor. The National Headache Foundation provides a handy template.

    Bipoc Communities And Migraine

    The prevalence of migraine among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in the United States has not been well studied.


    Of course, the prevalence of a disease doesnt tell the whole story. A paper in the Journal of the National Medical Association looked into the experience of headache among Black Americans and found that compared with white people with headache, African American headache patients are more likely to be diagnosed with comorbid depressive disorders; report headaches that are more frequent and severe in nature; have their headaches underdiagnosed and/or undertreated; and discontinue treatment prematurely, regardless of socioeconomic status.

    • Only 47 percent of Black individuals with headaches have an official headache diagnosis, compared with 70 percent of white individuals.
    • Latinos with headaches are 50 percent less likely to receive a migraine diagnosis than white individuals.
    • Only 14 percent of Black patients with headache receive prescriptions for acute migraine medications, compared with 37 percent of white patients with headache.

    Dr. Kiarashi also noted that BIPOC communities were underrepresented in migraine and headache research, based on the sample of studies on headache and migraine that her team reviewed.
