Contraindications Adverse Effects And Interactions

Like many essential oils, peppermint oil can be toxic and even lethal at excessive dosages it has been associated with interstitial nephritis and acute renal failure.17 It may have a choleretic effect and is contraindicated in patients with cholelithiasis or cholecystitis. Peppermint oil is relatively contraindicated in patients with hiatal hernia or significant gastroesophageal reflux disease, because its effect on the lower esophageal sphincter can lead to exacerbation of symptoms.

Peppermint oil has been used to trigger menstruation and should be avoided during pregnancy. There are insufficient data to assess its safety during lactation. Peppermint oil should not be used internally or on or near the face in infants and young children because of its potential to cause bronchospasm, tongue spasms, and, possibly, respiratory arrest.1 However, the amount of peppermint in over-the-counter medications, topical preparations, and herbal teas is likely safe in pregnant and lactating women and in young children.

Studies On Peppermint Oil

There have not been high quality clinical studies of peppermint oil for migraine. Some small studies have been conducted on the use of peppermint to relieve headaches, and one study found a combination of peppermint oil and ethanol provided pain relief from headaches.2

Peppermint oil has mainly been studied for its effects on IBS, with several studies showing some relief from digestive symptoms by taking peppermint oil in capsules. However, there is not enough evidence to conclusively prove peppermint oil is helpful for other conditions.1

Is Peppermint Oil Safe

Peppermint oil is safe in low amounts in most adults, but it can trigger side effects in people with sensitivities. It is important for the following individuals to either avoid using this essential oil or to use it carefully only with the help of a health care professional:40,41

Pregnant and nursing women Peppermint oil or other similar products may have emmenagogue and abortifacient effects, so it would be wise not to use peppermint oil without your physicians approval.42

Children Peppermint oil must not be used undiluted because there isnt enough information regarding its safety for children do not use it at all for children under 30 months of age. On older children, always try a patch test first to test for allergic reactions.43,44

Diabetics Using peppermint oil may raise your risk of low blood sugar levels or hypoglycemia.45

Gastroesophageal reflux disease and hiatal hernia patients Peppermint can relax the sphincter between the stomach and the esophagus, and cause acid to move up to the esophagus.46

Add the crushed leaves of a peppermint plant to a jar and fill 3/4 of the way with a carrier oil. Cap tightly and let rest for 24 hours. Strain out old peppermint leaves, then add new ones and more carrier oil. Let sit for another 24 hours, then strain again and repeat. Do this for 5 days. Finally, strain out the last bunch of peppermint leaves, cap and store.

In other animal research, peppermint oil has been found to affect the contractile response to acetylcholine, histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and substance P , providing a variety of potential pathways by which peppermint may exert an analgesic effct in both tension headaches and other pain conditions.

My Favorite Essential Oils

Different oils offer different benefits and I use them based on the desired outcome I want or the specific issue Im dealing with at the time.. Some essential oils can reduce stress, which can alleviate tension headaches, or soothe pain. As I stated earlier, Ive struggled with headaches and migraines for years. So I have gone through my fair share of testing out different oils. Here are my favorite oils to use for each specific kind of headache.

  • Tension Headache: These kind of headaches are the worst for me. I can slowly feel my shoulders rise up to my ears as my muscles get tighter and tighter.     Peppermint could be one of the most useful essential oils for migraine and tension headaches. Studies indicate that peppermint oil has the ability to improve circulation, inhibit muscle contractions, and stimulate blood flow in the forehead when applied topically.

    Peppermint has analgesic, anti-microbial, and anti-nausea properties. Specifically, this essential oil gets its calming effect on the nerves from its most active ingredient, called menthol.

    In fact, there is a lot of research on peppermint oil for headaches. In a placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover study published in 1996, German researchers would analyze 41 patients with 164 headache attacks.

    The peppermint oil was applied 15 and 30 minutes after the onset of the headache. The participants reported pain relief in their headache diaries, and peppermint oil was shown to be a cost-effective and well-tolerated alternative headache treatment.

    Another study published in the International Journal of Phytotherapy and Phytopharmacology in 1995 found that a combination of peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and ethanol was an effective headache treatment in 32 participants.

    The researchers used a small sponge to apply the peppermint oil mixture to the temples and foreheads of the participants. They found that sensitivity during a headache was reduced when peppermint oil was combined with the ethanol only.

    Reduction Of Colonic Spasm During Gi Procedures

    As a consequence of its relaxing properties on smooth muscle, peppermint oil given via enema has been examined in two trials as a means to reduce symptoms of gastrointestinal spasm during administration of barium enema and possibly during colonoscopy.10,11 In a randomized controlled trial of 383 patients undergoing barium enemas, 37 to 41 percent of those who received peppermint oil experienced a non-spasm examination, compared with 13.4 percent of those who received placebo .10 In an RCT of 141 patients undergoing barium enemas, no residual spasm was evident in 60 percent of the treated group, compared with 35 percent of the control group .11
