Which Medicine Is Best For Migraine

Risk Factors For Dehydration
Anyone can experience dehydration. Most people will experience mild dehydration. However, some individuals are at higher risk, including:
- people who live at higher altitudes
- infants and young children
- people with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes and kidney disease
- people who take medications that increase urine output
- endurance athletes or people engaging in strenuous physical activity
- people who live in hot climates
These groups of people should take special care to stay properly hydrated.
The best way to relieve a dehydration headache is to address both the pain and the loss of fluid.
If a person has a dehydration headache, they should:
- Increase fluid intake by drinking water or other healthy fluids.
- Suck on ice cubes.
- Replace lost electrolytes with a sports drink.

It appears as though caffeine may do this by narrowing dilated blood vessels that might contribute to migraine discomfort. But doctors believe theres much more to migraines than fluctuations in blood vessel width. The vasodilation and vasoconstriction component is not thought to be as important as it , Dr. Green says.
Second, although caffeine can help treat migrainesespecially in combination with other drugs, like typical pain relieversit has not been established as an effective preventive drug for migraines, Dr. Green and Dr. Natbony explain. Its potential lies more in treating pain that has already begun, and even that power appears to be limited. If its a mild migraine, there are some people that do respond to just a cup of coffee, Dr. Green says. But thats not the case for most people with moderate to severe migraines.

Consider The Type Of Pain Too
A dull, “tightening” feeling that doesn’t throb, or when your head is tender to the touch, is probably a tension headache. These are very common. Many things can set one off, including:
- Hormones related to your period
- After an injury or trauma
- Exercising hard or for a long time
- Rebound, after stopping an anti-headache medication
- High altitude you’re not used to
- Temporomandibular joint problems, when your headache comes with a clicking sound or popping in your jaw
Pain that’s throbbing and lasts a while, or that comes with nausea or changes in your vision or other senses, probably means a migraine. Light and noise make it worse. A migraine could hurt on just one side, but not for everyone. It’s not very common, but a migraine might make your nose runny or stuffy and your eyes watery, so you mistake it for a sinus infection. These can happen when your brain becomes used to that regular hit of caffeine over time. But lets back up a bit so you know exactly which processes to blame for your head pain.
Caffeine peps you up by affecting a chemical in your brain called adenosine. Adenosine typically accumulates in your brain over the course of the day, making you sleepy, Lauren Green, D.O., R.D., a board-certified neurologist at the USC Headache and Neuralgia Center and assistant clinical professor of neurology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, tells SELF. As an adenosine antagonist, caffeine is an opposing force that helps wake you up by binding to your adenosine receptors. This blocks your brains absorption of adenosine, preventing the level of drowsiness you would otherwise experience, Dr. Green explains.
All of this can happen with even one cup of coffee. But when you regularly consume significant amounts of caffeine, you can develop additional adenosine receptors, Dr. Green explains. And, in general, your adenosine receptors will become less sensitive to the effects of any caffeine you do consume. This means that over time you need to ingest more caffeine in order to block adenosines fatigue-inducing effects, so you form a dependence of sorts.

I tend to get them most often at the end of the day. It starts off with light pain and pressure, always in the front of my head, behind my forehead. As the pain increases, typically over the course of 30 to 45 minutes, it begins to be such intense pain that I feel nauseous. Personally, the pain comes in waves with 30 second intervals it will be intense pain for 30 seconds, then light pain for 30, and back to full intensity.

I started getting migraines the first year I got out of college. I officially received a diagnosis a year later when I finally went to the doctor. I was staring at my computer screen and I remember a strange feeling, like my neck was tensing up and my vision had a strange crack in it. I now know that this is whats called an aura.
A migraine feels like someone grabbed a hot rod and pressed it against one side of your head. Its a pulsating pain that you feel with every heartbeat mixed with intense nausea and dizziness. - Try to take better care of yourself as this can ease the pain and help prevent future occurrences. This can also help reduce intensity and duration.
- Dont overuse medication and try not to depend on the medication. Taking medications more than twice a week can increase the severity and frequency. Consult a physician before taking medications as there can be serious side effects.
- Get adequate sleep and rest. Seven to eight hours of sleep a day is needed.
- Try not to skip meals. Eat healthy and nutritious meals at the right time. Avoid food or beverages that have a high salt content.
- Exercise regularly. Regular physical aerobic activity can help improve the physical and mental well-being of a person. Choose activities that are not strenuous and those you enjoy. Take everything at a slower pace to avoid injury.
- Reduce stress. Try techniques that can help reduce stress such as meditation, yoga, or tai chi. Stress is a common trigger. To prevent one from happening, plan ahead. Simplify your schedule and organize it. Stay positive.
- Limit caffeine. Although some treatments include caffeine because of its benefits in reducing pain, it can also aggravate one. To prevent caffeine headaches, minimize or eliminate caffeine intake from your daily diet.
- Stay hydrated! Drinking plenty of fluids can help balance your electrolytes. This can help accommodate changes in blood vessel dilation and blood pressure.

Airline Accommodations To Help Prevent Headaches While Flying
While there’s a lot we can do to prevent an airplane headache or a migraine attack while flying, the airlines have a vested interest in making the flight experience less painful. After all, how many people want to fly an airline if they associate it with painful attacks?
Among the triggers within an airline’s control: optimizing light, sound and offensive odors offering healthy food and drink options supporting passenger hydration offering ice bags, earplugs, and eye masks stabilizing cabin pressure changes and ensuring flight attendant training. Some airlines do a better job than others with healthy food options and walking the aisles with water cups every 30-60 minutes.
Still, cabin lighting, jet engine sound, and food odors cannot be individually controlled, as I experienced on a recent Delta cross-country flight. With no way to dim the cabin lights or diffuse the nauseating combination of hot chicken and the lavatory, it was pure misery.

The worst migraine felt like my head was going to explode. I had a ton of pressure in my face, especially around my jaw, and I felt as if I didn’t get relief I would throw up. It honestly feels like I cannot function. It’s very hard to think or talk to people, especially if I am in the office.
It depends on the severity, but sometimes a nice shower and a glass of cold water knocks it out. Other times, if it is particularly nasty, I try to sleep it off. Most of the time though, being a new mom, I take a painkiller, power through it, and count the minutes until bedtime.
