What’s The Difference Between Extra Strength Excedrin And Excedrin Migraine

What Migraine Sufferers Need To Know About Excedrin As Production Is Halted

The difference between Excedrin Migraine & Excedrin Extra Strength – Public Service Announcement

Managing your migraines just got a little harder. GlaxoSmithKline is temporarily halting the production and distribution of two popular migraine-relieving products: Excedrin Extra Strength and Excedrin Migraine.

The move to temporarily pull both drugs stems from inconsistencies with the ingredients, which are acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine.

In a statement provided to Yahoo Lifestyle, GlaxoSmithKline said: Patient safety and product quality are our utmost priorities at GSK. Through routine quality control and assurance measures, we discovered inconsistencies in how we transfer and weigh ingredients for Excedrin Extra Strength Caplets and Geltabs and Excedrin Migraine Caplets and Geltabs. Based on the available data, GSK believes that the product does not pose a safety risk to consumers. However, as a precautionary measure, GSK Consumer Healthcare voluntarily implemented a temporary discontinuation of production and distribution.

The statement continued: This is a short term issue for which we expect production to begin again shortly. In the meantime, other Excedrin products are available along with other pain-relieving drugs, but dosages may differ. Consumers should consult their pharmacist for the most suitable alternative product.

So what should migraine and headache sufferers do in the meantime?

What Is The Difference Between Excedrin And Excedrin Migraine

Excedrin Extra Strength and Excedrin Migraine contain the same strengths of the same ingredients. However, their labeling is different. Excedrin Extra Strength is used to help relieve minor aches and pains associated with a headache, cold, arthritis, muscle ache, toothache, or premenstrual/menstrual cramps.

Excedrin Overuse: Too Much Of A Good Thing

Excedrin is one of the top drugs people use on their own, but it can lead to trouble with overuse, says Dr. Murinova. This is a drug that, if people are taking it 10 days a month or more, they can get into a condition called medication overuse headache, she says. If a person is treating three or more headaches a week with Excedrin and have stress, they could very easily be causing themselves to have more headaches.

In addition to more headaches, long-term use of Excedrin or a replacement combination on a frequent basis can also result in damage to kidneys, liver, and stomach, according to Tariq. Patients who take Excedrin or combine drugs as a replacement for Excedrin should not use them frequently, he adds.

What Are The Side Effects

Acetaminophen and aspirin can sometimes cause severe skin and/or allergic reactions. Avoid taking this medication if you are allergic to either, and seek immediate medical attention if you develop skin blisters, rash, hives, facial swelling, or trouble breathing.

More common side effects, which typically go away once you stop taking the medication, include:

  • Diarrhea

  • Passing urine more often

  • Trouble sleeping

The amount of caffeine in Excedrin Migraine is similar to that of a cup of coffee, so youll want to moderate your intake while taking this medication since too much caffeine can cause nervousness, irritability, and trouble sleeping.

In addition, Excedrin Migraine contains an NSAID medication, which can cause stomach bleeding. Stop the medication and call your provider if you notice bloody or black stools or stomach pain that does not get better, or if you are vomiting blood or feeling faint. NSAIDs can also cause ringing in your ears or hearing loss. But this tends to be reversible once the medication is stopped.

The medication also contains acetaminophen, which can be harmful to your liver. It is best not to exceed the maximum daily dosage, take additional acetaminophen products, or consume 3 or more alcoholic beverages a day while taking this medication.

When a headache begins, it can disrupt your whole day if you dont treat it, but Excedrin Extra Strength starts to work in 15 minutes for some.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that Excedrin Extra Strength relieves headaches better than Tylenol® Extra Strength.1 Both Excedrin Extra Strength and Tylenol® Extra Strength include acetaminophen, an analgesic that relieves pain and reduces fever. But Excedrin Extra Strength contains two additional active ingredients, aspirin and caffeine.

Aspirin targets pain by blocking the production of pain signaling chemicals called prostaglandins. Caffeine is referred to as an analgesic adjuvant. This means it helps boost the effects for certain pain relievers. In the case of Excedrin, caffeine boosts the effects of aspirin and acetaminophen making those medications up to 40% more effective.2,3,4

A reader submitted a tip concerning the pricing of Excedrin Migraine Pain Reliever versus Excedrin Extra Strength Pain Reliever.

TINA.org reader Ted M. submitted a tip concerning the pricing of Excedrin Migraine Pain Reliever versus Excedrin Extra Strength Pain Reliever. According to Ted, the Extra Strength formula is much less expensive than the Migraine formula, but contains the same active ingredients in the same amounts. He also told us that generic copies of these drugs are priced in a similarly deceptive way.

Heres what a TINA.org investigation found:

Excedrin Migraine Pain Reliever and its generic counterparts contain the following active ingredients:

      • Acetaminophen 250 mg

Excedrin Extra Strength Pain Reliever and its generic counterparts contain the following active ingredients:

      • Acetaminophen 250 mg
      • Caffeine 65 mg

      Looks familiar, right?

And our reader is right about the pricing in several cases, too. The Walmart store brand Equate, in particular, charges $9.22 for 200 tablets of their migraine formula and only $4.00 for the extra strength version. On average, however, stores price their migraine formulas only slightly higher than their extra strength formulas. The average per unit cost of migraine relief tablets is $0.09, while the average per unit cost of extra strength tablets is $0.08.

How Should I Take Excedrin Migraine

Excedrin Migraine is typically taken right away, when symptoms first begin. Adults can take 2 caplets or gel tabs with a glass of water in any 24-hour period unless directed by a healthcare provider. For some people, Excedrin Migraine can start relieving migraine pain in as little as 30 minutes.

For children or teenagers under 18 years of age, youll want to talk to a provider before use. Since Excedrin Migraine contains aspirin, there is a risk of Reyes syndrome, a rare but serious illness that can occur if children or teenagers who have had a recent viral infection like chickenpox or the flu use Excedrin Migraine. Also, avoid giving aspirin or aspirin-containing products to children under 12 years old.

What Does The Temporary Pause In Production Of Excedrin Extra Strength And Excedrin Migraine Mean For Those Living With Migraine

      Original article:

Those living with migraine may have to find an alternative over the counter treatment to Excedrin Migraine as it is discontinued until further notice.

Both caplet and gel-tablets of Excedrin Extra Strength and Excedrin Migraine will be temporarily unavailable as GlaxoSmithKline works to resolve an inconsistency in how the ingredients are weighed. The company said in a statement that the production halt is a precautionary measure and that there are no safety risks associated with either product. However, both will be temporarily off the shelves until the issue is resolved.

For people using Excedrin to relieve recurring migraine attacks, this news may be concerning. But what sounds scary, could actually be the ticket to reducing the frequency of your migraine attacks.

Why? Because taking over-the-counter or prescription medications too frequently can actually cause Medication Overuse Headache. Overstimulating the brain pathways involved in reducing pain can create a dependence on medication. Not only does overuse make the medication less effective over time, it also causes pain between attacks and may trigger more frequent attacks. Overuse may even have a hand in progressing the disease from episodic to chronic.

If you rely on these Excedrin products for relief from migraine, the American Migraine Foundation recommends you schedule an appointment with your headache specialist to determine an alternate course of treatment.

Migraine Sufferers Alert: Two Popular Excedrin Products Temporarily Discontinued

GlaxoSmithKline takes precautionary steps to ensure safety as inconsistencies in manufacture are investigated.

      Roman Tiraspolsky/Alamy

Two over-the-counter medicines that many headache and migraine sufferers rely on, Excedrin Extra Strength and Excedrin Migraine, will be hard to find in the coming days.

According to a statement from GlaxoSmithKline , the company that makes the drugs, production and distribution have been temporarily halted because of inconsistencies in how we transfer and weigh ingredients.

These inconsistencies were uncovered during routine quality control and assurance measures, according to a statement the company made to CNN. The products include Excedrin Extra Strength Caplets and Geltabs and Excedrin Migraine Caplets and Geltabs.

GSK has voluntarily taken the measures to suspend production and distribution as a precaution. Based on the available data, they do not believe the products pose a safety risk to consumers, according to a company spokesperson in an email to Everyday Health.

Still, thats little consolation to people who have come to rely on these products to relieve pain.

Patient advocate Paula K. Dumas, founder, CEO, and managing editor of MigraineAgain.com, agrees.

      What Is Excedrin Migraine

What is the difference between Tylenol and Advil

Excedrin migraine comes in the form of a caplet that can be taken through the mouth, and it contains 250 GM of all three ingredients it is made of, i.e., 250 GM of acetaminophen, 250 GM of aspirin, and 250 GM of caffeine. The dosage per person depends from age to age. People of age 18 or more can have two caplets with a glass of water, but the maximum dosage for them would be only those two caplets in a single day and not more than that.

For children or teens or below 18 years of age, their parents must talk to their childs doctor and ask for prescriptions before giving them Excedrin migraine. This is because of the ingredients in Excedrin. Aspirin should not be given to children and even to teens without any proper prescription. In fact, to children younger than 12 years, anything containing aspirin should not be given.

A new class-action lawsuit was brought against the makers of Excedrin Migraine when a migraine sufferer from Cherry Hill claimed that Novartis intentionally inflates the price of their popular pain medication, cashing in on migraine stigma.

For years, Kerri Yingst would take Excedrin Migraine to relieve constant headaches, opting for the red-labeled package designated for migraine sufferers over the standard green box carrying their extra-strength formula.

It caught her attention that the migraine treatment from Novartis is substantially more expensive than their green label painkillers- about 12-15% more in cost.

The natural assumption was that the higher price accounts for the products increased efficiency in dealing specifically with headaches caused by migraine disorder. That would explain for the price difference, right?

Actually, on closer inspection, she noted that the two products have exactly the same active ingredients.

Migraine Excedrin has 250 mg of aspirin, 250 mg of acetaminophen, and 65 mg of caffeine.

Excedrin Extra Strength also has 250 mg of aspirin, 250 mg of acetaminophen, and 65 mg of caffeine.

This discovery prompted her to file a class action lawsuit against Novartis for consumer fraud, on the grounds that they are decisively misleading migraine patients by selling them ordinary painkillers at a jacked-up price.

      What Is Extra Strength

What is the difference between Excedrin and Excedrin ...

The Extra Strength is the first launch of the Excedrin. It was launched into the market in the year 1960. It is one of the oldest in the market. The Extra Strength was one of the oldest products to be formulated with multiple ingredients. The Extra Strength may cure more than 50% of the migraine pain but it does not have the capability of eliminating 100% of the migraine pain.

The dosage of the Extra Strength is a little bit light. It can be consumed up to 4 meds in a single day. But that amount of dosage can make a person weak, or even nauseating.

Even though Extra Strength is formulated with Multiple ingredients, but it doesnt contain 3 essential ingredient which has good anti-migraine properties. The three ingredients are caffeine, acetaminophen, and aspirin. Extra Strength works best to cope up with light migraine pain. There has been no reporting of immediate side effects from the Extra Strength like Racing heart rate. The one and only possible explanation for the high dose limit would be that individuals with prolonged headaches will indeed take in medicines at any time and dosage which minimizes the effect of the medicines.
