Is Nausea Or Vomiting More Common With Any Specific Type Of Migraine
Nausea and vomiting can occur with migraine with and without aura. These symptoms are often found in vestibular migraine, a type of migraine that may or may not come with head pain. Symptoms of vestibular migraine can include vertigo and loss of balance, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.
People with vestibular migraine usually experience motion sickness beginning in childhood and have a history of migraine headaches.
Who Gets Migraines What Are The Risk Factors
Its difficult to predict who may get a migraine and who may not, but there are risk factors that may make you more vulnerable. These risk factors include:
- Genetics: Up to 80% of people who get migraine headaches have a first-degree relative with the disease.
- Gender. Migraine headaches happen to women more than men, especially women between the ages of 15 and 55. Its likely more common in women because of the influence of hormones.
- Stress level. You may get migraines more often if youre high-stress. Stress can trigger a migraine.
Treatment Menstrually Related Migraine
As you review these, remember that all medications have side effects, and you should discuss them with your doctor.
In general, MRM can be effectively managed with strategies similar to those used for non-MRM. Behavioral management is an important concept in menstrual as well as nonmenstrual migraine. Menstruation is one of many factors that put women at risk for migraine disease. Hormonal changes are just one of many potential trigger factors.
Most women living with menstrually related migraine are treated with acute medications. When attacks are very frequent, severe, or disabling, preventive treatment may be required.

Ice For Migraine Nausea Relief
Placing a cool compress on the back of your neck or across your wrists may help calm nausea. If youre using an ice pack from the freezer, wrap it in a hand towel before applying it directly to your skin. I really love cold products made specifically for migraine relief like this cold wrap made by Huggaroo. And this Ice Halo and Ice Towel from Koldtec. Use code MIGRAINESTRONG to receive $10 off your purchase.
I often reach for a soft cold compress for my forehead or an ice roller that can be used to massage the tension out of my neck during attacks. The roller stays cold for more than an hour and wont freeze your hand while youre using it. A flexible gel neck wrap can provide cooling relief to keep you from getting those nausea cold sweats as well. So ice for your face, head or neck and heat for your tummy are nausea relief strategies worth trying. Cold washcloths for nausea have been used for generations long before we had all these nice products. Grandma knew what helps with nausea.
How Is Abdominal Migraine Treated
Once a child is diagnosed with abdominal migraine, treatment generally falls into two categories: relieving symptoms during an episode and preventing future episodes.
While there are few studies on the treatment and management of abdominal migraine, doctors may prescribe the following medications, based on their usefulness in treating migraines:
- NSAIDs or acetaminophen to relieve the pain.
- Triptans. This family of drugs is commonly used to treat migraine headaches and, if taken as soon as a migraine starts, can prevent symptoms from progressing.
- Anti-nausea medication. Anti-nausea drugs act by blocking chemicals in the brain that trigger vomiting.
Some studies have shown evidence to support the use of the following medications in preventing abdominal migraine:
- Pizotifen, a benzocycloheptene-based drug.

Managing Migraine To Manage Postdrome
Avoiding factors that you know trigger migraines may help reduce your likelihood of postdrome or at least reduce the duration and severity as well as the potential for triggering another full-blown attack. For many people, stress can trigger or exacerbate their migraine, so take time after a migraine attack to focus on your mental health and take care of yourself. Regular exercise, a consistent sleeping pattern and a healthy diet can help reduce stress, as can relaxation techniques like meditation. Eat healthy, nutritious meals frequently and try to get more sleep. If light is a migraine trigger for you, dont be afraid to keep things dark for a few days as you go through the postdrome phase.
If youre experiencing postdrome, take this time to focus on yourself and your well-being to help your body recover from each migraine attack and its aftereffects. A headache specialist can help you better understand your unique migraine experience and identify patterns that help you manage your migraine and postdrome. Wondering What To Eat When Nauseous From Migraine Try Warm Foods And Warm Liquids
Remember we talked about how the digestive process slows down or stops during a migraine attack? This means fluids are often better tolerated when youre nauseous. Broths and soups may be a good first step to soothe your queasy tummy. They also provide hydration and electrolytes, which are particularly important if you have been vomiting. Warm teas like chamomile, ginger, cinnamon and peppermint can also be an effective treatment strategy for migraine nausea relief.
Aside from fluids, you will want to know what to eat when nauseous from migraine. You probably wont feel like eating much, but when you do try warm foods. Warm foods feel more soothing on the tummy as opposed to cold foods like salad which is harder to digest. Foods that are bland and easy to break down like mashed potatoes, rice noodles, scrambles eggs and dry foods like crackers and pretzels are often well tolerated too. The BRAT diet is a popular go to for nausea relief. This recipe for chicken and brown rice soup from the Dizzy Cook combines many of these soothing foods and includes protein which can help to normalize stomach activity. Be sure to stay upright for at least 30 minutes after eating to avoid making nausea symptoms worse.

How Are Migraines Treated
Migraine headaches are chronic. They cant be cured, but they can be managed and possibly improved. There are two main treatment approaches that use medications: abortive and preventive.
- Abortive medications are most effective when you use them at the first sign of a migraine. Take them while the pain is mild. By possibly stopping the headache process, abortive medications help stop or decrease your migraine symptoms, including pain, nausea, light sensitivity, etc. Some abortive medications work by constricting your blood vessels, bringing them back to normal and relieving the throbbing pain.
- Preventive medications may be prescribed when your headaches are severe, occur more than four times a month and are significantly interfering with your normal activities. Preventive medications reduce the frequency and severity of the headaches. Medications are generally taken on a regular, daily basis to help prevent migraines.
Causes Of Headaches And Nausea
Common causes of headaches and nausea
Some folks are more likely to get nausea with a migraine, like women and people who are prone to motion sickness.
Certain conditions associated with migraine are more likely to cause nausea or vomiting than others. These include:
- Migraine with or without aura. Those without aura cause severe head pain, sensitivity to light, and nausea. People who have migraines with aura typically have warning symptoms 20 minutes to 1 hour before the headache begins, like nausea, vision problems, and dizziness.
- Abdominal migraine. In rare cases, children have migraines that cause stomach pain instead of a headache. Those can make them feel nauseated or vomit.
- Benign paroxysmal vertigo. This can be a precursor of migraine in kids, but it can happen in anyone, even without a history of migraine. It usually happens to people over 60. They often feel like the room is moving or spinning. They may get sick to their stomach or vomit.
- Cyclic vomiting syndrome. It causes people, usually children, to have periods of nausea and vomiting that can last hours or days. The condition isnât a type of migraine, but the two seem to be connected. Many kids who have cyclic vomiting syndrome go on to have migraine as adults.

How Are Migraines And Nausea Related To Each Other
In addition to a headache and nausea, it can cause a sore throat and fever, make your voice scratchy, give you bad breath, and make it hard to swallow. Stress, anxiety, and depression: Headache and upset stomach can be symptoms of all three. How Are Migraine Headaches and Nausea Related? Thats unclear.
Cool Moving Air Heat And Light Pressure On Tummy
Its unclear why cool, moving air helps to bring about migraine nausea relief, but for many of us it helps. Maybe because nausea often comes along with cold sweats, moving air just plain feels good. If you live in a cool climate open a window or step outside and let the cold air wash over you. If you live in a warm climate like I do in Florida, lower your air conditioning thermostat. Moving air helps with nausea and for me vomiting too. I use a small portable fan that plugs right into my cell phone for an instant breeze of migraine nausea relief anywhere, including if I happen to be hanging over a toilet. Seriously does vomiting make you instantly hot too?
Speaking of hot, many in our community reported using a heating pad on their tummies to relieve nausea. Adding heat to your tummy can increase blood flow to the area and aide in the movement of muscles and digestion helping to curb that slowing digestive process that happens during attacks. We often automatically hold and press our tummies when were nauseous. Thats because warmth and light pressure are soothing. I get similar relief from this weighted heating pad that works by applying similar warmth and pressure.

What Is An Ocular Migraine
An ocular migraine is an eye problem characterized by short episodes of vision loss or visual disturbances.
For example, you may see flashing lights in one eye accompanied by a headache.
Your doctor may also refer to this type of migraine as ophthalmic or monocular migraines.
These episodes may be scary. But in most cases, they are harmless and short-lived. However, ocular migraines can be a sign of a more serious condition.
Some people experience retinal migraines every few months, but the frequency varies from person to person.
Retinal migraine is a unique condition that should not be confused with headache-type migraine or migraine with aura, which often affect both eyes.1

Can Eating Certain Foods Or Skipping Meals Trigger Nausea Or Migraine
Certain foods, and skipping meals, can trigger a migraine attack, and nausea can be a symptom that occurs during the attack, says Spears. Its not as common for people to do something to cause nausea and then end up with a migraine attack on the back end its only in a small percentage of patients that nausea would occur first, he says.
When it comes to which foods trigger a migraine, it varies from person to person, says Lauren Doyle Strauss, DO, a headache specialist and assistant professor at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Moderation is a good idea dont eat or drink anything to excess. Avoid things with a lot of preservatives in them, such as processed meats or hard cheeses, she says.
Because skipping meals can trigger migraine attacks, its a good idea for people with headaches or migraine to routinely have breakfast, lunch, and dinner with some snacks throughout the day, according to Dr. Strauss. This can help maintain blood sugar levels and prevent hypoglycemia, which is when blood sugar drops to a low level, and may bring on a headache or make it worse, according to the National Headache Foundation.

What Is The Prognosis For People With Migraines
Migraines are unique to each individual. Likewise, how migraines are managed is also unique. The best outcomes are usually achieved by learning and avoiding personal migraine triggers, managing symptoms, practicing preventive methods, following the advice of your healthcare provider and reporting any significant changes as soon as they occur.
What Can I Do To Prevent Migraines
One of the best ways to prevent migraines is to try to avoid the things that might trigger your attacks. Most people benefit from trying to get stable sleep, eating regular meals, drinking plenty of fluids to keep hydrated, and trying to manage stress. Taking regular exercise may also help prevent migraines since it helps with breathing, improving blood sugar balance and maintaining general wellbeing. Although you should take care not to engage in very strenuous activity that your body is not used to as this can sometimes act as a migraine trigger.
Keeping a diary of your migraines can be a useful way to record when and where you experience attacks, check for any patterns, and try to identify your triggers. Take the diary when you see your GP so you can communicate your symptoms with them and they can find the best way to help you.

Peppermints & Essential Oils
Peppermint is a well documented Ayurvedic remedy for migraine nausea. Peppermint & ginger were by far the most popular nausea relief poll answers we received from our community. As another gastric calming herb, eating peppermint or drinking it in the form of tea can relieve migraine nausea symptoms. Old fashioned peppermint candies help ease nausea for some people. These awesome peppermints are made locally in Florida where I live and are so popular in my area they can even be found in many nearby cancer treatment centers & hospital gift shops. An unexpected nausea relief product in my toolkit is Erbaviva Organic Quease Ease Lip Balm. I received it in a subscription box and so far really like it.
Peppermint essential oil can be used as a migraine nausea remedy by rubbing peppermint oil on your temples or behind your ears. Just smelling peppermint can be helpful too. Sensitivity To Light And Sound
About 80% of people who get migraine headaches are sensitive to light. That’s called . People who get attacks only from time to time are less likely to be light-sensitive than those who have chronic migraines.
Researchers think photophobia starts in your optic nerve, which carries messages from your eyes to your brain. The response can be so severe that you may need to wear dark sunglasses or lie down in a dark room to feel better. You can also try window blinds and soft lighting. And avoid glare when looking at screens.
Being sensitive to loud noises, called phonophobia, often comes along with light sensitivity. Try to avoid those noises or use a white noise machine. But you may not want to avoid all sound. If you surround yourself with silence, you can become even more sensitive, and that could lead to headaches that are more painful.
