Migraine Treatment: Whats Old Whats New

Migraine headaches are a common cause of disability in the United States, affecting approximately 27 million American adults, or 17.1% of women and 5.6% of men.1 To help better define migraines, the term classical migraine has been replaced with migraine with aura, and non-classical migraine is now referred to as migraine without aura. Chronic migraine, which affects 3.2 million Americans , is defined as having migraine symptoms for at least 15 days per month, lasting at least 4 hours, and for longer than 3 months in duration. This is in contrast to episodic migraine, which causes symptoms on fewer than 15 days per month.2 Current treatment for chronic migraine is divided into acute, abortive agents , and medications that will prevent migraine onset.

This review will highlight the current definitions of migraines as well as treatment options.

Feverfew For Migraine Headache

By Greg Lamont-Mitchell, ND

Feverfew belongs to the Asteraceae or daisy family of plants. Its a medicinal plant traditionally used for the treatment of fever, migraine headache, rheumatoid arthritis, stomachache, toothache and insect bites. Found in gardens and along roadsides, Feverfew is a beautiful daisy-like perennial. The name feverfew stems from the Latin word or fever reducer.

Uses

Feverfew has historically been used for the prevention and treatment of migraine headaches. A migraine can be caused by increased serotonin release which may be inflammatory and irritating to your nerves, causing pain. Feverfew inhibits serotonin release in the blood by platelets and white blood cells, and may also block serotonin receptors which, over time, may reduce the frequency and severity of migraine headaches. Combining feverfew with CoQ10 and magnesium can be helpful for reducing the severity and frequency of migraines.

Herbal Qualities

Qualities which herbalists use to describe feverfew are analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-pyretic , anti-rheumatic, bitter, carminative , antispasmodic and useful as an emmenagogue .

Drug Interactions

Feverfew may inhibit the activity of platelets and should not be used for blood-thinners.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated for use by pregnant women.

The yellow spice found in curries and ballpark mustard contains a powerful compound called curcumin, which inhibits enzymes and proteins that promote inflammation. Several studies have found that turmeric specifically reduces pain and swelling in arthritis patients. In one study of people with knee osteoarthritis, those who ate just 2 grams of the spice a day had pain relief and increased mobility equal to those who took 800 milligrams of ibuprofen. How to get some curcumin in your diet? Sprinkle ½ teaspoon on rice or in vegetables daily. Or keep some packets of ballpark mustard in your pocket and break them out at lunchtimeits the perfect dose for arthritis pain relief. This is how much turmeric you need to reduce inflammation.

Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease particularly affecting elderly people which leads to massive bone destruction with consequent inflammation, pain, and debility. Allopathic medicine can provide only symptomatic relief. However, Zingiber officinale is a plant belonging to the Zingiberaceae family, which has traditionally been used for treatment of RA in alternative medicines of many countries. Many of the phytochemical constituents of the rhizomes of this plant have therapeutic benefits including amelioration of RA. This review attempts to list those phytochemical constituents with their reported mechanisms of action. It is concluded that these phytochemicals can form the basis of discovery of new drugs, which not only can provide symptomatic relief but also may provide total relief from RA by stopping RA-induced bone destruction. As the development of RA is a complex process, further research should be continued towards elucidating the molecular details leading to RA and drugs that can stop or reverse these processes by phytoconstituents of ginger.

What Is Feverfew Used For

Feverfew leaves and fever extracts are purported to have many potential benefits. Not all of these effects are supported by scientific evidence.

In alternative medicine, feverfew is typically used as a herbal remedy for the following conditions:

  • Psoriasis
  • Stomachaches

There is not enough evidence to support the use of feverfew for these conditions.

Although research on feverfew’s effects is limited, studies have at potential feverfew benefits to treat these conditions:

Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment

Feverfew is a powerful antioxidant, demonstrating more active antioxidant capabilities than vitamin C against free radicals. Free radicals are described as unstable molecules that our bodies produce, or that we are exposed to, that can damage cells, causing illness and aging. One study found that feverfew was able to reduce and, to some degrees, repair the damage done to the skin daily by UV rays and cigarette smoke .

Effects On Vascular Smooth Muscle

Chloroform leaf extracts of feverfew inhibited the contraction and relaxation of rabbit aorta. The inhibition was concentration and time-dependent, noncompetitive, and irreversible, occurring with or without the presence of endothelium. The leaf extracts inhibited contractions induced by potassium depolarization much less. Only fresh leaf extracts as compared with dried powdered leaves inhibited the effects on smooth muscle, which was likely because of a higher concentration of parthenolide. Experiments in rat and rabbit muscle using chloroform extract from fresh leaves suggest feverfew may inhibit smooth muscle spasm by blocking open potassium channels.

Researchers have demonstrated that parthenolide noncompetitively inhibited serotonin -mediated spasmogenic response of indirect-acting 5-HT agonists in isolated rat stomach fundus preparation. Parthenolide noncompetitively antagonized the contractions elicited by the serotonergic drugs fenfluramine and dextroamphetamine on the fundal tissue. The mechanism of action associated with parthenolide does not involve the inhibition of 5-HT2 receptors directly, but rather occurs at the level of 5-HT stored in vesicles of the intramural neurons of fundal tissue.

How Cannabis Works On Rheumatoid Arthritis

Feverfew, Tanacetum parthenium

Medical cannabis comes from the plant cannabis sativa and affects the body by interacting with the endocannabinoid system . The ECS system is broadly made up of cannabinoid molecules that activate the system, receptors that are distributed all over the body and are activated by the cannabinoid molecules and enzymes that play an important role in the synthesis and degradation of the cannabinoids.

The ECS can be activated by cannabinoids that are naturally produced in the body endocannabinoids or those produced externally and consumed. These external cannabinoids include plant-based cannabinoids from cannabis sativa known as phytocannabinoids or cannabinoids that are synthesized in a pharmaceutical setting for example Nabilone. Much of our understanding of the ECS on the body has come from studying the effects of endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids and synthetic cannabinoids. The most-studied phytocannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol , which are thought to cause the main effects of cannabis. Nonetheless, there are at least 140 phytocannabinoids identified in cannabis sativa and though these other cannabinoids are not as well studied as THC and CBD they are also likely to also have some effect on the body.

Feverfew is available in capsule, tablet, and liquid extract form, and is sold in most health food stores.

If you choose to buy a supplement, the National Institutes of Health recommends that you look for a Supplement Facts label on the product that you buy. This label will contain vital information including the amount of active ingredients per serving, and other added ingredients .

Lastly, the organization suggests that you look for a product that contains a seal of approval from a third party organization that provides quality testing. These organizations include U.S. Pharmacopeia, ConsumerLab.com, and NSF International. A seal of approval from one of these organizations does not guarantee the product’s safety or effectiveness but it does provide assurance that the product was properly manufactured, contains the ingredients listed on the label, and does not contain harmful levels of contaminants.

The Medicinal Cannabis Debate

As a Schedule I controlled substance with no accepted medicinal use, high abuse potential, concerns for dependence, and lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervisionalong with a national stigma surrounding the potential harms and implication of cannabis use as a gateway drug to other substancestransitioning from a vilified substance to one with therapeutic merits has been controversial. The United States Pharmacopoeia and the FDA have considered the complexities of regulating this plant-based therapy, including the numerous compounds and complex interactions between substances in this product, and how it might fit into the current regulatory framework of drugs in United States.,,

Make Your Own Capsaicin Cream

Capsaicin, the compound in chili peppers that gives them their heat, is an ingredient in many over-the-counter pain relief ointments. It works by reducing levels of a compound called substance P, which transmits pain signals to your brain. You can whip up your own massage oil by mixing a few dashes of ground cayenne with 2-3 teaspoons of olive oil. Apply it with gauze to unbroken skin on your painful joints several times a day. The first few doses will cause a mild burning sensation on the surface of your skin, but youll become desensitized to that feeling after a week or so. Just be sure to keep it away from your mouth, eyes, and other mucous membranes, where it will really sting.
