Migraines can be extraordinarily debilitating both because of the pain and because they leave you unable to tolerate light, sound, smell, and touch. Migraines require much more intervention than common tension headaches. If you suffer from migraines, it is best to try to prevent your migraines. Since it is difficult to prevent migraines entirely, there are some steps that can help you get through your next one.

What Makes Migraines Go Away

If you or a loved one suffer from migraine headaches, then you know the excruciating pain that can result from this neurological condition. Spotting The Signs Of Serious Illness

Headaches are extremely common and most of them arent a cause for anxiety.

Occasionally, though, a headache is a symptom of a serious illness, such as meningitis or a brain haemorrhage, and requires urgent medical attention.

Tension headaches are the most common type.

What are the causes?

About three out of four headaches are caused by tension in the scalp or neck muscles due to stress. Tension headaches tend to occur frequently and cause moderate pain, particularly at the back and front of the head. Its often described as a tight band encircling the head.

Other common causes of headaches include hangovers, having irregular meals, long journeys, noise, a stuffy atmosphere, thundery weather, too much sleep, too much excitement, a fever, sinusitis and suffering toothache.

Some headaches require urgent medical attention

A severe headache with fever, a stiff neck and rash may be a sign of meningitis, a condition in which the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord become inflamed.

A sudden headache that feels like a blow to the back of the head could be a subarachnoid haemorrhage, in which bleeding occurs between the membranes covering the brain.

In elderly people, a headache with tenderness of the scalp or temple may be due to temporal arteritis, in which blood vessels in the head become inflamed.

Advance Signs Of A Migraine

There are a number of signs that may indicate an oncoming migraine. They usually appear a few hours or up to two days before the episode. They include:

  • fatigue
  • mood swings
  • increased sensitivity to light, smells and noise

    Can Migraine Be Worse During Menopause

    What Tests Are Used To Find Out If I Have Migraine

    If you think you get migraine headaches, talk with your doctor. Before your appointment, write down:

  • How often you have headaches
  • Where the pain is
  • How long the headaches last
  • When the headaches happen, such as during your period
  • Other symptoms, such as nausea or blind spots
  • Any family history of migraine
  • All the medicines that you are taking for all your medical problems, even the over-the-counter medicines
  • All the medicines you have taken in the past that you can recall and, if possible, the doses you took and any side effects you had
  • Your doctor may also do an exam and ask more questions about your health history. This could include past head injury and sinus or dental problems. Your doctor may be able to diagnose migraine just from the information you provide.

    You may get a blood test or other tests, such as CT scan or MRI, if your doctor thinks that something else is causing your headaches. Work with your doctor to decide on the best tests for you.

    Drink A Small Amount Of Caffeine

    Although caffeine can cause headaches of its own in large amounts, a small dose of a beverage like coffee or soda can soothe the pain of an intense migraine.

    When you drink caffeine, it can offer pain relieving benefitsâas long as you drink just a small amount, as the Mayo Clinic notes. If you drink it right when you feel a migraine beginning to appear, it can also improve the effects of Tylenol, aspirin, and other over-the-counter pain relievers .
