Ask For Help And Support
When youre getting back on track after a migraine, consider asking others for help.
If youre struggling to meet a deadline while coping with migraine symptoms or their aftermath, your supervisor might be willing to give you an extension. Your co-workers or classmates might be able to help you catch up, too.
When it comes to your responsibilities at home, your friends or family members may be willing to pitch in.
For example, see if they could help with child care, chores, or errands. If you can hire someone to help with such tasks, that may also give you more time to rest or catch up on other responsibilities.
Your doctor might also be able to help. If you experience symptoms of migraine, let them know. Ask about treatments you can take to help prevent and ease symptoms, including symptoms of postdrome.
So Much Sleep And Then All The Junk Food
In the days after a migraine my head is sore, my eyes tire easily, my brain is usually pretty foggy, and my moods are super-variable, so I try to be extra gentle with my body and mind, take Aleve every morning, take lots of breaks from reading words on screens, and avoid high-stress situations.
I usually also avoid florescent lights and loud noises whenever possible for about 72 hours post-migraine and will shamelessly wear sunglasses indoors if necessary.

Why Isnt There Any Research On Postdrome
Firstly, since the postdrome stage does not include pain, it isnt taken seriously enough the expend resources to study it. Also, why study something that may just be a complication of the usual stages and issues of a migraine?
Finally, what if it doesnt really exist? There have been substantial numbers of reports of these symptoms, but no biological indication has been observed to account for it. Not only that, but not everyone experiences postdrome, although many do.
Postdrome needs to be researched because it can frustrate the need for a migraineur to return to work. It undermines ones confidence and affects daily performance. After all, it is still the same constellation of symptoms that occur throughout the stages of a migraine attack. Every symptom and stage should be considered when developing a hypothesis of what a migraine is and what causes it.
A prospective daily electronic diary study was conducted by Nicola J. Griffin, M.D., et al. The study lasted three months including over 120 patients with migraine. All non-headache symptoms before, during, and after were recorded daily. A visual scale was used to capture the overall level of functioning and the severity of the pain. Postdrome was defined as the period between the end of pain to the return to normal.
However, a better-controlled study is definitely needed to clarify the definition of a migraine to determine adequate treatment.

What Can Patients Do
The migraine postdrome can feel weird or even different, but it is important to remember that it actually is a normal part of the process. Whether it is the last and lingering phase of the attack or the earliest beginnings of a recovery, the basics of migraine treatment still apply.
Rest, hydration, trigger management and other forms of self care all remain key aspects to help you feel back to normal. You do not need overexert yourself simply because the primary pain phase has passed and people might expect it from you. Allow your brain and your body to recover in due time. In addition, you want to maintain a delicate balance with your medications and work with your doctor or specialist to continue the healing process without risking rebound headache phenomenon.

Managing Migraine To Manage Postdrome
Avoiding factors that you know trigger migraines may help reduce your likelihood of postdrome or at least reduce the duration and severity as well as the potential for triggering another full-blown attack. For many people, stress can trigger or exacerbate their migraine, so take time after a migraine attack to focus on your mental health and take care of yourself. Regular exercise, a consistent sleeping pattern and a healthy diet can help reduce stress, as can relaxation techniques like meditation. Eat healthy, nutritious meals frequently and try to get more sleep. If light is a migraine trigger for you, dont be afraid to keep things dark for a few days as you go through the postdrome phase.

How Are Migraines Treated
Migraine headaches are chronic. They cant be cured, but they can be managed and possibly improved. There are two main treatment approaches that use medications: abortive and preventive.
- Abortive medications are most effective when you use them at the first sign of a migraine. Take them while the pain is mild. By possibly stopping the headache process, abortive medications help stop or decrease your migraine symptoms, including pain, nausea, light sensitivity, etc. Some abortive medications work by constricting your blood vessels, bringing them back to normal and relieving the throbbing pain.
- Preventive medications may be prescribed when your headaches are severe, occur more than four times a month and are significantly interfering with your normal activities. Preventive medications reduce the frequency and severity of the headaches. Medications are generally taken on a regular, daily basis to help prevent migraines.
Information To Include In Your Headache Journal
A headache journal supplements your medical records and gives the SSA information about how migraines affect your ability to function. Making notes about your symptoms, the duration of the migraine, the intensity of the pain, the medication you take, and if you made a trip to the doctor or emergency room for medical attention supports the diagnosis that your migraines are a medically determinable impairment of a primary headache disorder.
Every time you get a migraine, you should write down the following details:
- The date the migraine occurred and the duration
- What you believe triggered the migraine
- Any medications you took and how they affected you
- The severity of the pain
- Any symptoms other than a headache
- What you did during the headache
- What you were not able to do because of the migraine
- Any effects before or after the headache
- How long it took to recover from the episode
The more detail you can give about symptoms, including if you were nauseous, dizzy, or couldnt get out of bed, the more information you give your doctor to support the diagnosis. Bring the journal with you to each appointment, and make sure the doctor enters the information into your medical records.

Definition And Possible Causes
Migraine, by its nature, is a fluid processsymptoms can be inconsistent between episodes, triggers may not be easily or reliably identified, and it can be difficult to distinguish when one phase of an attack ends and another begins. The postdrome or post-attack stage presents similar challenges because it can all feel like one long experience for patients with very little reprieve.
Researchers have narrowed its definition down to describe the period from when the headache and other primary symptoms end and when the patient feels “back to normal.”1 Others have tried to further delineate a true postdromal phase from the persistence of migraine symptoms after the head pain resolvesin which the latter is still considered part of the core migraine experience.2 However, even these descriptions are flawed because some migraine patients do not have typical headache pain AND residual headache can manifest during a postdrome too.
People with migraine often report lingering symptoms like fatigue or mental fogginess after their attacks in the postdrome phase
However, a group of clinical researchers led by Dr. Peter Goadsby may have identified something that is unique to the post-attack period. Specifically, they discovered that there was a significant reduction of blood flow to most areas of the brain, which could account for some of what patients go through in the postdrome.8 Still, the exact mechanisms remain unclear and more study is needed.
Can Cannabis Relieve Nausea
Research available to date suggests that the answer is positive. There are many studies that show the capacity of THC to reduce nausea and vomiting. However, most research focuses on how cannabis helps nausea in cancer patients. One exception is a study by Parker et al., published in the British Journal of Pharmacology in 2011.
Even the United States National Cancer Institute wrote that cannabis could help with nausea.
The researchers, on that occasion, looked at whether cannabinoids could impact nausea and its related symptoms. They found that THC and CBD helped alleviate nausea and vomiting. The study also suggested that cannabis was potentially more effective than over-the-counter remedies that have limited efficacy.
Interestingly, even the United States National Cancer Institute wrote that cannabis could help with nausea. On its website, it says that THC can help relieve pain and nausea, reduce inflammation, and can act as an antioxidant.

Coping Tips For A Migraine Hangover
Don’t Make Sudden Movements, Take It Slow
So, I don’t know about you, but I have such a sore head after a migraine. Any sudden movement just hurts my head a lot, so I make sure to move slowly. It’s almost like I move in slow motion.
When I stand up or when I lay down or anything like that I make sure just to go slowly and just be thoughtful of my head and what it went through the day before.
And I make sure that I don’t do any strenuous exercise or anything that’s going to put any pressure or trauma on my head because I know from experience that that can cause another migraine, which is never any fun.
Eat A Hearty Meal
I also if I’ve been throwing up from a migraine have a sore tummy, and I always found that eating cobs or bread or pasta, something that’s going to soak up any acids or anything that feels kind of uncomfortable in your stomach helps a lot.
So, I always find myself eating bread or like a wrap or a sandwich. Something that is hearty like fruits and stuff also helps. They make you feel a lot better and a lot fresher.
And I also make sure that I stay super hydrated because of me having to throw up and not drinking enough. So, I make sure I have my water bottle by my side, and I drink that throughout the whole day.
Take Extra Medicine
Sometimes if I need to as well, I take some paracetamol or any extra medicine just to take the edge off, any extra pains that I have and any side effects I have from a migraine.

Dangers Of Hangover Headaches
A hangover migraine is usually a symptom of an underlying cause. It is worthy to note that while the migraine itself will not likely cause an individual any harm other than discomfort, whatever it represents, whether an accumulation of toxins in the bloodstream or an imbalance in hormones could affect the person.
A hangover headache could affect a person in different ways. This includes:
- It could affect a persons memory people whose work relies mostly on a perfectly working memory could be affected.
- It could affect a persons concentration An example is a driver with a hangover headache could lose his concentration thus causing an accident.
- Dexterity For example, a headache after drinking alcohol while operating machinery could affect concentration, enough to cause accidents on the operators or others.
- It could cause sleep deprivation Sleep deprivation from a hangover headache could interfere with normal bodily functions such as blood pressure by lowering it.
The pain could mask other underlying symptoms and conditions which could present a more serious problem to the victim. These include

When To Seek Medical Help
The American Migraine Foundation estimate that less than 50% of people with migraine seek help from a doctor.
If a migraine episode lasts for longer than is typical for an individual, they should seek a doctors advice.
They should visit the emergency room if a migraine episode becomes too severe and at-home treatments do not alleviate symptoms.
An individual should seek immediate medical attention if they have the following :
- an extremely severe headache
- a headache that starts abruptly like a thunderclap, especially if the individual is aged over 50 years
- a migraine headache accompanied with a stiff neck, or fever, confusion, slurred speech, or seizures
- speech, vision, movement, or balance problems that differ from the regular migraine pattern
Always seek medical attention if someone has a headache following a head injury.
The Postdrome: Migraine’s Silent Sister
Last week I had a migraine. To some that won’t mean much, but fellow sufferers will know that it means hours, or even days, of nausea, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, and crushing, pulsing pain. The kind of pain that makes you think that self- trepanation with the rusty drill from the understairs cupboard might be a viable option. Eventually – minutes, hours, or days, later – the pain subsides. For me the days following a migraine are filled with a mixture of relief and mental exhaustion. My head is sore and my brain is tired.
It feels kind of like a mental hangover – like being drugged. Sometimes the migraine lasts for days and when it finishes I want to make up for lost time. I want to function. And somehow somehow I just can’t. For a day or more after a severe migraine, I feel like I’m working through a mental fog, one so heavy that even routine tasks take on an otherworldly quality.
What is this feeling AFTER the pain? I knew I would face skepticism at best and outright disbelief at worst when I talked to people about it. And I even began to doubt myself. Maybe I was just tired? Finally I decided to look for a study. Is this real, or am I just imagining things?

Coping With A Migraine Hangover
Currently, there are no treatments available specifically for the postdrome phase of a Migraine. To add insult to injury, you are more susceptible to having another Migraine attack during the hangover, too.
This is why it is so important to manage Migraine triggers during this phase.
- Drinking plenty of water
While it may be tempting to get an extra-large cup of coffee to battle brain fog or take a 3-hour nap to fight an overwhelming sense of fatigue during a Migraine hangover, try to avoid doing so.
Excess sleep and caffeine may, in fact, make these symptoms worse, which is not what you want.
If these symptoms do not go away on their own after a day or two, you should seek care with your primary care provider or headache specialist. Your doctor will want to make sure there isn’t anything else going on, especially if you have symptoms like weakness, cognition trouble, fatigue, moodiness, and dizziness.
Other possible causes of these symptoms are anemia, thyroid problems, mood disorders, or medication side effects. Of course, true or actual weakness, which includes motor loss or limb weakness so that there is strength loss or inability of the limb to function properly, warrants urgent neurological exam and referral.
