Its best to have a doctor do an exam, just to make sure.

What You Can Do For A Migraine Headache

If you get a migraine headache, dont panic — there are things you can do at home to relieve your migraine symptoms. Rest in a cool, quiet, dark room can help when you have a migraine, you want to minimize stimuli to allow your brain to rest. Over-the-counter migraine medications can also provide more relief than ibuprofen or acetaminophen on their own. Allow yourself to rest while youre suffering a migraine attack since activity can make the pain worse. And if youre nauseated, make sure to drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated.

While you can get temporary relief for your migraine from your urgent care doctor, you should make an appointment with your primary care doctor if you start to have migraines more frequently.

Sometimes the pain and nausea from a migraine can be too much to manage at home. For relief from your severe migraine, visit a Birmingham MedHelp near you.

Understanding The Scope Of Urgent Care Practice

Because urgent care practitioners are on the “front lines” of medicine, they need to be proficient in evaluating and caring for – at least initially – any patient who walks into an urgent care medicine center or urgent care clinic. For this reason, there is some overlap in the scope of practice between Urgent Care Medicine and all existing medical specialties that involve direct patient care. Because of the convenience of Urgent Care Centers, patients choose these facilities when they are unable to see their usual doctor in a timely fashion or choose not to go to a hospital emergency department.

For most patients seen in an ambulatory medicine setting, the Urgent Care Medicine specialist can fully care for the presenting problem, either independently or in consultation with another specialist. Sometimes patients will require follow-up with or referral to another specialist, transfer to an emergency department, or direct hospitalization . Urgent Care Medicine specialists do not perform surgery , do not care for inpatients, and typically do not engage in the continuing medical care of chronic medical problems.

Can I Got To Urgent Care If I Think Im In Preterm Labor

Preterm labor can happen between 24 and 37 weeks a timeframe that is too early for labor to occur. The later you are in pregnancy, the less serious preterm labor is . It can be hard to know for sure if youre in preterm labor, as contractions can sometimes be Braxton Hicks . If youre in your third trimester of pregnancy and experience any of the following symptoms of preterm labor, you can go to urgent care.

  • Leaking or gushing fluid from your vagina
  • Regular contractions
  • Feeling of pressure in your lower abdomen or pelvis
  • Dull aching in your lower back

A doctor at urgent care will be able to quickly check whether youre in labor or not. If you are, youll be sent to the hospital. If youre not in labor, youll be sent home in far less time and with a far less expensive bill than if you went to the ER.

Urgent Care Vs Emergency Care Going For Constipation

How to Deal with Migraine Headaches

Urgent Care VS Emergency Care Going for Constipation

Constipation occurs when one has fewer than three bowel movements a week. In most cases, it is easy to treat, but when severity kicks, one may need to head to a hospital. Bloating, vomiting and severe abdominal pain may indicate a bowel obstruction. Severe bloating may also be a sign of fecal impaction which is the inability to pass gas through the rectum. Bloody stools with severe abdominal pains indicate possible strangulated obstruction of the intestine. These conditions are solved via surgical means which makes them true emergencies.

Constipation emanates from a few factors such as the change in diet, insufficient fiber in food, infrequent bowel movements, not drinking enough water, gastrointestinal tract issues, insufficient exercise and certain diseases such as diabetes, Parkinsons disease, and spinal injuries. It happens when the colon absorbs too much water hence the waste becomes too hard making it hard to pass easily.

We all know that fecal matter is waste and if it stays longer in the colon things only get worse. If left unresolved it could turn fatal and dangerous. If the only symptoms include a little bloating, it means that the constipation is in its initial stages. The urgent care center will administer you, take an examination, then give a treatment plan to help ease the bloating.

How Patients Can Advocate For Their Care In The Er

Know your migraine and know which treatments have worked for you in the past, said Dr. Hamilton. Especially if youve been to the emergency room before, it can be very helpful to come up with a plan of attack for what you should do if there is a next time that you have to go.

She suggests that patients work with their neurologist or headache specialist to figure out a rescue plan designed to keep patients out of the ER. When the rescue options fail, work with your doctor and draft a treatment plan that is then signed by the doctor. This is helpful when its hard for patients to think straight and fully communicate during an attack.

I think we could potentially lower the number of people who are going to the emergency room if you know exactly when to be concerned and if you have a rescue or backup plan if your usual treatments dont work, said Dr. Hamilton.

Check In Online If You Can

Many urgent care clinics are walk-in centers, meaning you dont need an appointment to see a healthcare professional. Because you dont need an appointment, your wait time may vary considerably depending on the number of people ahead of you. It could take 20 minutes to see a healthcare professional, or it could take an hour or longer.

Keep in mind that some urgent care centers do allow appointments. So it doesnt hurt to call a center ahead of your arrival to see if you can reserve a specific time slot to shorten your wait time.

Even if a center doesnt allow appointments, you might have the option of online check-in. Go to the centers website to see if online check-in is available. If so, you can go ahead and provide initial information so they can prepare for your arrival.

This process reserves your spot in line, which helps you see a healthcare professional sooner. Think of it like putting your name down on a waitlist at a restaurant. Its not a set appointment slot, but it means the wait time can start before you even get to the clinic. That way, youll likely spend less time sitting in the lobby.

The Debilitating Pain Of Migraines

Do you suffer from headaches? Unfortunately, headaches are something that many people experience from time to time. At times they can be debilitating making it difficult to perform your daily activities. There are numerous different types of headaches, but most are probably familiar with migraines.

Migraines are incredibly common throughout the world, affecting an estimated one in every seven people. Symptoms of a migraine include pain in one side of the head and around the eyes. These can last anywhere from 4-72 hours. Most people with these will have nausea and vomiting as well as experience light and sound sensitivities. Often, people may experience an aura which can be like flashing lights in their eyes and then the headache follows. Many will have their symptoms worsen with activity.

If you go to your doctor and have never experienced a migraine before he or she may perform a CT scan to rule out any underlying causes such as bleeding in your head. If there is not a serious underlying cause they will likely give you medication to help stop the headache. Generally, this is a combination of medications including something for pain and something to help with nausea.

When To Go To The Emergency Room Vs Urgent Care

A hospital’s ER has more resources and specialists at its disposal to treat severe problems. Every minute counts in instances like heart attack or stroke. Head to the nearest ER or call 911 if you have any signs or symptoms of a life-threatening condition:

  • heart attack symptoms: chest pain, sweating, accompanying pain in your arm, neck or back
  • stroke symptoms: sudden weakness, change in vision or trouble talking
  • trouble breathing

Check wait times and find an Allina Health emergency room location near you.

Reasons To Seek Emergency Help

Headache or Migraine

Getting emergency medical help may be a good option if youre experiencing new and unusual symptoms. Another reason is if your headache doesnt respond to or worsens with your regular treatment.

Most times, people who decide to go to the ER experience a new level of pain thats more severe than a previous migraine.

Seek immediate medical attention if your migraine is accompanied by the following:

  • sudden onset headache or a sudden change in baseline headache
  • neck stiffness
  • confusion or changes in awareness

A migraine headache that comes on within seconds, particularly if youre , is a sign that you need to get emergency medical help.

Sometimes, headache and associated symptoms could indicate a more serious underlying medical emergency, such as a stroke.

If you have a history of stroke, heart disease, or diseases of the liver or kidneys, consider taking extra precautions. A new or changing headache could indicate a life threatening emergency.

Migraine with aura may increase your risk for stroke in the future. This type of migraine includes vision changes or neurological symptoms that usually occur before the actual headache.

If you have regular migraine with aura, talk to your doctor about emergency medical symptoms to watch for.

Burst And Taper Therapy

With the former burst and taper therapy, the initial high dose burst would hit me so hard that the side effects were nearly unbearable. My face would redden and be painful to the touch, and I wouldn’t be able to sleep. I do think that it occasionally helped break a bad migraine cycle, but similar to DHE , it was unpleasant to nearly intolerable. I am hoping maybe a five day course of 20 mg tablets, either two or three times per day, could be something that might decrease my ER visits, and I feel grateful that the other health situations I had re-introduced me to the drug and showed that 20 mg tablets didn’t cause the uncomfortable side effects I’d had in the past.

Questions to Ask Your Urgent Care Provider

You Still Need Your Primary Care Provider

Migraine 101: A 3-Step Guide to Managing Headaches

While urgent care can care for you quickly when you are sick or injured, it doesn’t replace your primary care provider. Having a provider you see regularly ensures that someone is looking out for your future health, like making sure your immunizations are current, preventing or controlling chronic conditions, managing medications and discussing health screenings, like mammograms. Urgent care providers can help you establish care with a primary care provider or schedule a follow-up visit, sharing the electronic record of your visit. This assures your provider is already familiar with your test results and treatments.
