In the midst of an attack, few of us can complete a coherent sentence. The Migraine Babble and nurse triage questions don’t play well together.

“They thought I was a druggie because my speech was confused, it was quite a busy night and they were attending ‘more critical’ cases first, road accidents victims and all! All I was given was a vomit bag and sleeping tablets! Woke up 5 hours later and decided to go home! Olè M.

“The ‘LAST’ time I went to the ER for a migraine I was in SO much pain I couldn’t see, I was in excruciating pain, I went in the wheelchair backwards because I just wanted to be in a ball and literally couldn’t straighten myself out. The check in person who takes vitals before they bring you back made me turn around in the wheelchair so she could get my vitals. I told them I couldn’t and I was just screaming no no no. She told me she couldn’t help me if I couldn’t sit straight. So I turned around and two seconds later I passed out cracked my head open on the floor and was unconscious for I don’t know how long.” Skipper D.

Keep Track Of Any Symptoms Besides Headache And Fever

Keeping track of certain signs and symptoms such as joint pain or redness, elevated blood pressure, and rashes may help your doctor make a proper diagnosis, says Strauss.

A fever with headache could be a sign of a lot of different inflammatory or rheumatological conditions such as lupus, and so that’s why paying attention to rashes and joint pain and joint aches is important, she says.

Advice For Calling Out Sick

I say, just do what youre capable of that day. If you can, go into work, but I think it would be a bad idea to be in front of customers, suggest you work in the back office for the day. Keeping to yourself, quiet if you can, just getting on with stuff in your own time, might be an easier way to get back to work than rushing back to the frontline

I think we just have to think of ourselves in the moment and try and forget about the workload and deadlineshowever, I havent figured out how to do that yet!

Never push through, take care of you properly first, and then only if you are 75% better from the migraine, try and go in

Stay home definitely, and value yourself by resting. We are so much more than what we do. I had to learn this lesson and always found it so tricky as a nurse to call in sick, knowing full well that if I went in I ran the risk of making mistakes, lapses concentration, ineffectiveness, etc.

Poor Positioning Or Posture Can Cause Tension

A lot of us quickly pivoted to working from home, and we dont have the ideal office setup, says Hamilton. That can mean poor positioning or posture, which can increase the likelihood of a migraine-related or tension-type headache, she says. When youre on your laptop, you can end up hunching forward more, which can lead to tension in your neck and shoulders.

Optimizing the ergonomics of your home office to make it more comfortable and to encourage better posture can go a long way, says Hamilton. Ideally, you want to have a setup where you are able to take an upright posture so youre able to look straight ahead at your computer if you can, she says. That may mean adjusting your desk or table or using books or other props to get optimum positioning, she adds. This can help you avoid the position where your head is forward and your shoulders hunched, says Hamilton.

Even if your posture is great, taking breaks to stretch is a good idea, especially for your shoulder and neck muscles, she adds.

What Is The Treatment For Sore Throat And Headache

Usually, you can treat sore throat and headache with at-home remedies. If you have strep throat, your provider will prescribe antibiotics to get rid of it. Take all the medicine, even though youll start to feel better within a day or two.

At-home treatments for sore throat and headache include:

  • Fluids, especially water, tea with honey, soup or broth.
  • Throat lozenges or ice cubes.
  • Warm saltwater gargle.
  • Cool compress on your head.
  • Plenty of rest.

If your child has a headache and sore throat, remember:

  • Choose the right medication: Dont give aspirin to young children. It may cause a life-threatening condition called Reyes syndrome. Make sure to choose pain relievers made for infants and children.

Over half of the vaccinees experienced the headache after less than 10 h and 80% within 20 h after the vaccination. What Can I Do For My Headaches

If you have suffered from headaches before, the best option is to stick to your previous treatments.

If you have identified triggers that start the headaches, try to avoid them as this may reduce them occurring by a half. Try to avoid alcohol. Drinking alcohol can make headaches worse.

Regular sleep, reducing stress and routine eating times are important for migraine management. These activities may be beneficial for people suffering COVID headaches. Relaxation techniques can be helpful when you have muscle tension in the neck and shoulders.

Taking painkillers for headaches is an option but ideally should be limited to less than three days a week. It is important not to take regular daily painkillers as they themselves can be the cause of headaches .

If painkillers cannot be avoided then paracetamol and ibuprofen are the best. If the headache is exceptionally bad, then it could be a migraine. Check with your GP or your pharmacist to find the right medicine for you.If you have a daily headache, your GP could prescribe you a preventative medication to take for a few weeks/months.

Epstein-Barr virus, which causes most cases of mononucleosis, or mono, is a member of the herpesvirus family and very common, says Strauss. Its notorious for causing a pretty refractory headache, she adds.

The headache caused by an Epstein-Barr virus infection resembles a tension-type headache, with aching pain but not with the other symptoms that often accompany migraine, such as nausea and vomiting, according to the National Headache Foundation.

Sinusitis or a sinus infection due to either a virus or bacterial infection could cause worsened headaches and fever, says Strauss. This can even occur in a person with established migraine if they develop sinus disease, they could have fever with migraine, she says.

Other signs or symptoms of a sinus infection include facial pain, teary or reddened eyes, postnasal drip, and head pain that gets worse while leaning forward, she adds.
