The lining membranes also swell up and may block the drainage of the mucus from the space. It then becomes thickened and infected, leading to headache. The headache of sinusitis is often felt at the front of the head and also in the face or teeth. Often the face feels tender to pressure, particularly just below the eyes and beside the nose. You may have a stuffy nose and the pain is often worse when you bend forwards. Acute sinusitis is the type that comes on quickly in association with a cold or sudden allergy. You may have a temperature and be producing a lot of mucus. Chronic sinusitis can be caused by allergy, by overusing decongestants or by an acute sinusitis that doesn’t settle. The sinuses become chronically infected and the sinus linings chronically swollen. The contents of the sinuses may be thick but often not infected.

In the second part of my blog post series on headaches, Im going to discuss a different type of headache tension headaches. Unlike migraines, tension headaches have some very distinct and specific characteristics that make them much easier to diagnose. However, as I discussed in my post on migraines, in order to overcome headaches and achieve lasting relief, the treatment you receive must match the type of headache that someone youre suffering. You cant treat a migraine headache and a tension headache the same way and expect the same results because they have distinct causes and mechanisms for producing their unique headache symptoms. Migraine is linked to both depression and anxiety. According to the American Migraine Foundation, about 25 percent of people with migraine have depression, and about 50 percent have anxiety. The exact mechanism is not understood, says Susan W. Broner, MD, the medical director at the Weill Cornell Medicine Headache Program in New York City.

When To See A Doctor

“If your headaches are increasing in frequency or severity, or are interfering with your usual activities, see a doctor,” says Dr. Andiman.

Seek immediate medical attention if youre experiencing the worst headache youve ever had, lose vision or consciousness, have uncontrollable vomiting, or if your headache lasts more than 72 hours with less than 4 hours pain-free.

Your Home Environment And Migraine

You can create a more supportive environment at home by eliminating certain triggers.

For example, to reduce your exposure to uncomfortably bright light, cover your windows with curtains or blinds, and arrange your furniture so youre not facing the windows when working or relaxing. In addition, use dimmers and soft lighting indoors.

The Link Between Caffeine And Everyday Headaches

Does caffeine cause those constant headaches or does it cure them? The answer: both. Caffeine is a double-edged sword, Mauskop says. Over-the-counter medicines often include caffeine. However, headaches can worsen as a result of withdrawal mechanisms, as every regular coffee drinker probably knows.
