What Are The Stages Of A Migraine

How Do You Know If You Have Cluster Headaches?

The Migraine Research Foundation says that migraine is a neurological disease that affects 39 million people in the U.S. Migraines, which often begin in childhood, adolescence or early adulthood, can progress through four stages: prodrome, aura, attack and post-drome. Not everyone who has migraines goes through all stages.

Imagine you are sitting at your computer with a pile of work to go through. Suddenly, you feel a little off.

You cant focus on your screen, so you rub your eyes. Then you then begin to see floaters and flashes of light. Thinking that youve had enough work for the day, you think about grabbing a coffee.

As you stand up, your vision goes black and you cant see.

You feel tingling in your face and your right arm goes numb. You understandably panic and ask your coworker to help you. You think you might be having a stroke.

Thats what Migraine with aura can feel like: many of the same stroke symptoms, yet only temporary. Despite the fact that aura symptoms disappear, they can be incredibly disabling while theyre happening.

When To Call A Doctor About Your Migraines

If youre not getting satisfactory relief from over-the-counter medications and lifestyle changes, or if youre taking over-the-counter medications more than 10 to 15 times per month, talk to your primary care physician about your headaches.

The evaluation of headaches usually starts with the primary care doctor, who assesses whether a patient has a common headache or something more serious, says Santiago Mazuera Mejia, MD, a neurologist at the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute at LifeBridge Health in Baltimore, Maryland. Primary care doctors often continue to see people with infrequent migraines. However, if at some point, there is a need for more complex treatments, patients usually go to neurologists and headache specialists who have additional training in preventive and acute treatments as well as nonmedical treatments.

Its important to get evaluated by a doctor because taking over-the-counter medications too frequently can sometimes lead to serious side effects or actually make you get headaches more often.

Its helpful to keep a diary if you experience migraines because you may discover your triggers, which can inform which type of treatment is best for you. Write down what time your migraines occur, how long they last, how you slept the night before, what you ate/drank that day and when, how you felt emotionally that day, etc. Then bring that information to your doctor.

Whats The Difference Between A Headache And A Migraine

A tension-type headache, the most common type of headache, causes pain on both sides of the head. Its a tight pressure rather than a throbbing, and you might also have soreness in your temples, neck and shoulder muscles. Headache pain isnt usually considered severe.

Migraine, on the other hand, has many symptoms including headache. This can feel like a throbbing pain that might be worse on one side of your head. You can also feel pain around your eyes, temples, face, jaw or neck. The pain may increase with physical activity, which is why it helps to lie down.

But the key difference between a headache and migraine? Migraines can be distressing and debilitating and can affect your whole body. People can feel vaguely unwell for a day or two before a migraine headache comes on . Once it has started, a migraine headache can last for between 4 hours and several days.

Migraine is a chronic disorder of the brain with recurrent severe attacks other common features are nausea or even vomiting, explains Assistant Professor of Neurology Yulia Orlova on The Conversation. Many people have sensitivity to light, odours or sounds and are unable to carry on daily activity.

Migraine is ranked the sixth most disabling disease in the world. Global Burden of Disease

How Long Will My Migraine Attack Last

How To Tell If You Have A Headache Or A Migraine

The duration of a migraine attack usually depends on what type of migraine you have and how you treat your symptoms. These tips can help to shorten it.

An estimated 39 million Americans have migraine, with symptoms that can range from mild to severe, according to the Migraine Research Foundation. Migraine attacks previously were thought to be a result of abnormal dilation of blood vessels in the brain, but scientists now believe that the cause may be more complex and involve inherited differences in brain chemistry.

Women are much more likely than men to have migraine, as are people with a family history of migraine, according to the Migraine Research Foundation.

But not all migraine attacks are alike, and not everyone has the same migraine symptoms, says neurologist Alexander Mauskop, MD, a founder and director of the New York Headache Center in Manhattan and White Plains, New York.

The length of time a migraine attack lasts can vary, too. The National Headache Foundation says most migraine attacks last 4 to 72 hours. But some people have migraines for a shorter time and some people have them for longer its very individual, Dr. Mauskop says.

Best Thc Products For Migraines

When choosing the best THC product for migraines, many people usually consider the strain of cannabis. The most effective and standard relief method for migraines is smoking flowers. OG Kush is the most common flower used for people who want to stay in their rooms until the migraine subsides.

It has been shown to have a sedating effect, making it possible to get some sleep until the migraine attack is over. Cannabis has a different impact on different kinds of users, and some users are more interested in supplementing their THC with CBD.

Such users will opt for AC/DC, Charlottes Web, and Harlequin for their cannabis. These strains are usually combined with other more potent THC strains like Pineapple Express, which brings about the effect of both the THC and the CBD.

Evidence has clearly shown and proven that THC and CBD are effective treatment methods for migraines.

There is a need for further research and studies to establish whether both are effective treatments for migraines. So far, the studies on medical marijuana on pain treatment have been proven to be very helpful and practical, and CBD and THC can also be viable alternative treatments for migraines.

Medical marijuana products and CBD oil are increasingly being used by people suffering from migraines to lessen the symptoms without the severe side effects of prescribed medicines.

What Are Brain Tumors

A brain tumor occurs when abnormal cells form in the brain. In a healthy brain, cells follow a normal cycle of aging, death, and replacement by new cells. With tumors, this process is interrupted.

The tumor cells continue to grow without dying even though the body doesnt need them. As the tumor grows it takes up space within the skull and interferes with normal brain activity.

Tumors can cause damage by:

  • Increasing pressure in the brain.
  • Shifting the brain and causing it to push against the skull.
  • Invading and damaging nearby healthy brain tissue and nerves.

Brain tumors can be benign or malignant .

Benign tumors are non cancerous. They are typically slow-growing and have clear borders which separate them from healthy brain tissue. Spreading is rare. Benign tumors may be found in areas of the brain which control vital life functions and may still require urgent treatment. Around 60% of brain tumors are benign.

A malignant brain tumor is a cancerous tumor in the brain. Brain cancer is the same as a malignant brain tumor. These are often life-threatening tumors which grow rapidly and aggressively spread to surrounding areas in the brain and central nervous system. Less than 40% of brain tumors are found to be malignant.

Imagine your boss has raised their voice at you over a minor error. Try structuring a response like this:

While I usually appreciate feedback, I dont work well when people raise their voices at me. That doesnt make me feel safe in the workplace, and when I dont feel safe, I cant do my best work. In the future, do not raise your voice at me.

Your boss reaction to this response will help you to determine their level of toxicity. If they are apologetic, perhaps they are open to learning from their mistakes. If they hurl further insults or place blame on you, it may be time to revisit talking to HR.

Make A Migraine Or Headache Action Plan

Strauss recommends creating a headache or migraine action plan to get you through the holidays. That can take some of the worry out of it, because you know what you will do if an attack occurs, she says.

The plan can include knowing what medication you will take if you feel an attack coming on, going to a dark room if you need some quiet time, or planning how youll get home if you choose to leave an event, says Strauss.

I also recommend putting together a migraine or headache pouch. Put all your medicine in it and make it easy to identify, so if someone else needs to grab it for you, they dont need to sift through your whole bag, she says.

What Happens During A Migraine

Every migraine begins differently. Sometimes people get a warning that a migraine is on its way. A few hours or even days before the actual headache, people might feel funny or ânot right. They might crave different foods, or feel thirsty, irritable, tired, or even full of energy. This is called a âpremonition.â

Some people get auras. These are neurological symptoms that start just before the headache and last up to an hour. An aura is different in every person, but it often affects vision. For example, a person might:

  • have blurred vision
  • see spots, colored balls, jagged lines, or bright flashing lights
  • smell a certain odor
  • feel tingling in a part of their face

Once the headache starts, light, smell, or sound may bother people with migraines or make them feel worse. Sometimes, if they try to continue with their usual routine, they may become nauseated and vomit. Often the pain begins only on one side of the head, but it might eventually affect both sides. Trying to do physical activities can make the pain worse.

Most migraines last from 30 minutes to several hours some can last a couple of days.
