After conducting a survey among migraine sufferers we found that, for the almost 1,000 people who took our survey, the average pain rating during a migraine is 7.4 . So, pretty darn agonizing.

âSometimes,â survey respondent and Cove customer America M. says, âitâs too much pain to handle leaving the house. Not only can my head throb for several hours, but I become very dizzy and not focused. Iâm also very nauseated and my body just feels terrible.â

Dealing with that type of pain is hard enough on its own. But pushing through it when you also have to work? Thatâs a doozy. Given how incapacitating migraines can be, itâs no surprise that they can have a major impact on your ability to do your job. And we donât believe you should be penalized for something that isnât your fault.

If you work for someone else, itâs a good idea to have an open, honest conversation with your boss to see if you can develop a plan that helps you be the most productive and healthy employee possible.

And because 60% of sufferers who took the survey do not talk to their manager about their migraine attacks, we wanted to emphasize that you absolutely have the right to advocate for yourself and your health at work.

So, here are some tips on how to go about this conversation .

Use Believable Sick Day Excuses Sick At Work

You do not have to give elaborate explanations when taking a sick day at work. Use plausible sick day excuses when you want to call in sick. You do not have to share all details with your colleagues or boss. Be polite and professional, but you are not obliged to answer any follow-up questions if you are uncomfortable.

To Talk Or Not To Talk

Generally, it’s a good idea to keep your personal life separate from work life.

But if you’ve tried to quietly remove migraine triggers from work, and it’s not working — or if you find yourself having to leave the office frequently because migraine symptoms are interfering with your job performance, it may be time to let your boss and/or co-workers know about your migraines.

And keep in mind your upcoming job performance review. If migraines cause the quality of your work to suffer but your supervisor doesn’t know about your condition, your performance evaluations can take a hit. “If you didn’t ask for an accommodation before, that’s the wrong time to ask for it,” Reisinger says.

Ultimately, it’s your decision to disclose, or not. If you do decide to discuss a medical condition at work, Reisinger says, the approach you take matters.

If it’s obvious that you’re dealing with something personal at work — say you have to wear sunglasses indoors to reduce the effects of bright office lights — it’s important to avoid telling only some people around the office and not others. “If you tell only some people, it starts to look like you’re playing favorites,” Reisinger says.

And limit what you share. No one needs to hear about how often your migraines cause you to vomit, for example. “Keep it light, and don’t try to get people to feel sorry for you,” Reisinger says.

Your employer’s Human Resources department is another place to turn for help if specialized programs aren’t in place.

Identify Your Migraine Triggers And Avoid Them

While thereâs no cure for migraine, there are likely certain things that trigger your attacks. If you havenât identified yours yet, start tracking your migraine attacks and see if there are any trends. Some common triggers are:

Or maybe you can rest in your car with some noise-canceling headphones and sunglasses.
