Treatments For Silent Migraine

Headache Treatments : How to Stop Migraine Headaches

It can be a little trickier to treat silent migraine, if only because theres no pain symptom that can be handled with an OTC pain reliever. Other than that, however, treatment of silent migraine isnt much different than it isfor traditional migraine .

First up is sensory deprivation: lying in a dark, quiet room can work wonders for soothing the sensory overload that may have triggered your migraine in the first place. If you can keep liquids down, be sure to hydrate since dehydration can worsen your symptoms.

You can also try alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, massage, and vitamin supplementation. Magnesium, for example, has been classified by theAmerican Migraine Foundation as a supplement that is probably effective and generally considered safe for most people to use as a preventive treatment.

Finally, Dr. Segil says there are two pharmaceutical approaches to treating migraine: daily medications, which are taken to prevent episodes, and rescue medications, which are taken to relieve symptoms during an episode. Typically, doctors recommend using a daily medication if you have 14 or more migraine days per month. If you do not need daily preventive medication, then you can use rescue medication with symptoms.

While both of these types of medications can be used to address silent migraine in most cases, Dr. Segil warns that hemiplegic migraine is often handled differently because of its stroke-like symptoms.

What Are The Types Of Headaches What Type Of Headache Is A Migraine

There are over 150 types of headaches, divided into two categories: primary headaches and secondary headaches. A migraine is a primary headache, meaning that it isnt caused by a different medical condition. Primary headache disorders are clinical diagnoses, meaning theres no blood test or imaging study to diagnose it. A secondary headache is a symptom of another health issue.

A majority of migraine patients report having triggers that precede the onset of a migraine attack. This means that knowing which migraine triggers lead to attacks has the potential to help prevent migraines with aura. One of the best ways to identify and avoid triggers that are specific to your experience is by using a migraine diary: a running journal of attacks, symptoms, pre-headache symptoms, severity, and more.

How Is Abdominal Migraine Diagnosed

There is currently no test to confirm abdominal migraine. Your doctor will make a diagnosis based on specific criteria that details the type, frequency, and severity of symptoms associated with abdominal migraine. The diagnosis will typically be made only after all other causes of abdominal pain have been ruled out.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Migraine

Individual migraines are moderate to severe in intensity, often characterized by a throbbing or pounding feeling. Although they are frequently one-sided, they may occur anywhere on the head, neck and face or all over. At their worst, they are typically associated with sensitivity to light, noise and/or smells. Nausea is one of the most common symptoms and it worsens with activity, which often results in patient disability. In many respects, migraines are much like alcohol-related hangovers.

Migraine pain can be felt in the face, where it may be mistaken for sinus headache or in the neck, where it may be mistaken for arthritis or muscle spasm. Complicating the diagnosis of migraine is that the headaches may be accompanied by other “sinus like” symptoms, including watering eyes, nasal congestion and a sense of facial pressure. Most patients who think they have sinus headache in fact have migraines.

In up to 25 percent of patients, the migraine headache pain may be preceded by an aura, a temporary neurological syndrome that slowly progresses and then typically resolves just as the pain begins. While the most common type of migraine aura involves visual disturbances , many people experience numbness, confusion, trouble speaking, vertigo and other strokelike neurological symptoms. Some patients may experience auras without headaches.

Increase Your Turkey Intake

You’ve heard that eating turkey on Thanksgiving can make you sleepy thanks to its tryptophan. Did you know that it can also help you to find relief from migraine pain faster?

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that stimulates dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is the “happy” chemical, one that helps us to feel great, and it is also a key component in the release of serotonin within the body. Serotonin works to relax the body, alleviating anxiety, worry, and negativity. Even more importantly, as tryptophan helps to produce dopamine and, in turn, serotonin, it relaxes the muscles surrounding the brain, soothing the capillaries of the scalp.

What Are The Treatments For Migraine

There is no absolute cure for migraine. However, lots of treatments are available to help ease the symptoms of a migraine attack.

When a migraine attack occurs, most people find that lying down in a quiet, dark room is helpful. Sleeping can also help. Some people find that their symptoms die down after they have vomited .

Most people affected by migraine will already have tried paracetamol, aspirin and perhaps anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen before they seek advice from their doctor. If ordinary painkillers alone are not relieving your symptoms, your GP might prescribe you a triptan to be taken in addition to over-the-counter painkillers . Triptans are available in different forms to suit individuals , although it is important to note that some people develop short-term side effects when taking triptans. Your doctor may also prescribe you anti-sickness medication. If your situation does not improve after treatment, you might be referred to a specialist migraine clinic.

It is important to avoid taking painkillers on more than two days per week or more than 10 days per month as this can in fact make things worse by triggering medication overuse headaches.

You canât tell the difference between a migraine and a tension-type headache by how often they occur. Both can occur at irregular intervals. Also, in rare cases, both can occur daily or almost daily.

Beware Of Hormonal Changes

Hormones play a significant role in terms of migraines. Many women tend to experience more migraine headaches during, or just before, their menstrual period. Women should be especially vigilant with their diet and exercise habits during this time. This will ease symptoms before they begin. According to the Mayo Clinic, oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy may increase the frequency and severity of migraines. Some women may find relief by switching to another form of birth control, while others may find they have fewer migraines while taking birth control.
