I Get Migraines Right Before My Period Could They Be Related To My Menstrual Cycle

Migraine how to eat Health News

More than half of migraines in women occur right before, during, or after a woman has her period. This often is called “menstrual migraine.” But, just a small fraction of women who have migraine around their period only have migraine at this time. Most have migraine headaches at other times of the month as well.

How the menstrual cycle and migraine are linked is still unclear. We know that just before the cycle begins, levels of the female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, go down sharply. This drop in hormones may trigger a migraine, because estrogen controls chemicals in the brain that affect a woman’s pain sensation.

Talk with your doctor if you think you have menstrual migraine. You may find that medicines, making lifestyle changes, and home treatment methods can prevent or reduce the pain.

Migraine Headaches In Cancer Patients: How To Prevent And Treat Them

Cancer patients can experience a wide range of side effects. For some, migraine headaches can have a big impact on their quality of life.

But what makes migraines different than regular headaches? And are cancer patients more likely to develop them?

We spoke with cancer neurologist Karin Woodman, M.D., about what cancer patients can do to prevent and treat migraines during treatment.

What is a migraine headache?

In general, a migraine is a severe headache thats considered debilitating. Many patients who suffer from migraines find even talking can make the headache more painful.

How are migraines diagnosed?

When diagnosing migraines versus other headaches, we look at the length of time the patient suffers from the headache. Migraines typically last for four hours or more usually for most of the day. We also look for associated symptoms. These may include:

  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • light and/or sound sensitivity
  • inability to tolerate movement, including even talking, during the migraine

Many patients experience aura, or warning signs before the pain of a migraine occurs. Patients may see fleeting bright lights or zigzag lines if they experience a visual aura. Non-visual auras can be other sensory symptoms, such as tingling, numbness or fatigue. Some people may notice that they are yawning frequently the day before they have a migraine.

Consider What Caused It

If you can determine the cause of your migraine, you may be able to take additional steps to find relief. For instance, are you getting a migraine because you havent had enough to eat today? Some migraines can be triggered by a lack of food, which can cause . If you think your headache is triggered by hunger, eat something thats easy on the stomach such as saltine crackers. This, in combination with your medications, may give you additional relief. The National Headache Foundation says some people may crave carbohydrates just before a migraine hits. If this is the case, listen to your body and have a snack.

Dehydration can cause headaches too, and may make your migraine worse. If you havent had enough fluids today, get a drink of water. Sip slowly to avoid triggering nausea or vomiting.

Be Sensitive When Choosing Meeting Locations

For someone who suffers from migraines, there may be a few things which we love to do but simply cant anymore because it could trigger an attack.

I cant do things I enjoyed before. Attending films, concerts, clubs and even playing music.

I cant go on long walks in the parks when the warm/hot weather comes back. I would really love to but I cant.

I used to listen to music a lot but I cant do that anymore.

Heres a small tip, avoid suggesting places with a lot of people and loud noises. Maybe a nice short walk in the evening or a quiet dinner at our favourite cafe or restaurant would be nice!

Pay Attention To The Weather

Changes in the weather can impact your migraine patterns. High humidity and hot temperatures can stimulate headaches, as well as rainy days. If the weather becomes uncomfortable for you, you may need to step inside and take a break from the outdoors. Of course, you cant always avoid going outside, but you can minimize your time spent in certain headache-inducing weather.
