Hormonal Headache Vs Menstrual Migraine

While a hormonal headache and a menstrual migraine are both caused by fluctuating hormones, the difference between the two involves the severity of the head pain.

A hormonal headache may be mild to moderate and cause a nagging ache or throb. Its a nuisance and uncomfortable, but it might not interfere with your day-to-day routine.

A menstrual migraine, on the other hand, can be debilitating. According to the National Headache Foundation, menstrual migraine affects about 60 percent of women.

If you regularly experience migraine attacks, you may be susceptible to menstrual migraine.

A menstrual migraine differs from a regular migraine in that it isnt usually associated with an aura. Aura refers to flashing lights, zigzag lines, or other sensory experiences that some people experience before a migraine attack.

A menstrual migraine is characterized by severe throbbing that can start on one side of the forehead and travel to the other. The severity can make it difficult to keep your eyes open, work, or even think.

Treatment for a hormonal headache and a menstrual migraine depend on the severity.

You might want to look at your diet.

Youre at your desk doing work, or sitting on the couch reading a book, or playing with your kids in the backyard, when it strikes: that nasty headache. Forget what you were trying to dothat throbbing pain in your noggin has other ideas.

Headaches, especially when experienced regularly and severely, arent just distractingthey can be downright debilitating. And if it feels like you suffer from them more often than, say, your BF or husband, its not your imagination: Women experience headaches at a rate three times higher than men, according to the American Migraine Foundation. Doctors arent entirely sure why this is the case, but they do think our hormones have something to do with it.

For migraine sufferers, there are two types of medicinal therapies, according to Dr. Lawrence Newman, MD, professor of neurology and director of the Headache Division at NYU Langone Health. We divide them into the preventative agents, things that are given on a daily basis to prevent future headaches, and acute medications, things that you take when you’re actually in the midst of a migraine to short circuit the attack, he says.

Difference Between Migraine And Headache

The long and short of it is this: All migraines are headaches, but not all headaches are migraines. Migraines are a type of vascular headache that occurs when blood vessels swell and become inflamed, spurring pain. That throbbing ache you often feel? Thats your blood vessels pulsing. And unlike other headaches, a migraine may offer a sort of warning signal that pain is around the corner by way of an aura.

Caffeine: Help Or Hindrance

When combined with some pain medications, caffeine can help provide relief. Most migraine sufferers can drink a cup or two a day of coffee without any problems. However, too much caffeine can lead to headaches when the stimulant effect wears off. It can work the other way as well. If you are used to having a cup of coffee at about the same time every morning, you may get a headache if you sleep in and your coffee is delayed.

How Can I Tell If I Have A Migraine Or Just A Bad Tension

Compared with migraine, tension-type headache is generally less severe and rarely disabling. Compare your symptoms with those in this chart to see what type of headache you might be having.

Although fatigue and stress can bring on both tension and migraine headaches, migraines can be triggered by certain foods, changes in the body’s hormone levels, and even changes in the weather.

There also are differences in how types of headaches respond to treatment with medicines. Although some over-the-counter drugs used to treat tension-type headaches sometimes help migraine headaches, the drugs used to treat migraine attacks do not work for tension-type headaches for most people.

You can’t tell the difference between a migraine and a tension-type headache by how often they occur. Both can occur at irregular intervals. Also, in rare cases, both can occur daily or almost daily.

What Medications Contribute To Rebound Headaches

Rebound headaches are caused by excessive use of certain acute medications. However, the term excessive depends on the type of acute medication taken. Each medication class has a specific threshold.

According to American Migraine Foundation, the following situations may cause rebound headaches:

  • Triptans or ergotamine when used on 10 or more days per month for more than 3 months
  • Opioids when used 10 or more days per month for more than 3 months
  • Combination pain relievers when used on more than 10 days per month for more than 3 months
  • Simple analgesics when used on more than 15 days per month for more than 3 months
  • Caffeine intake of more than 200mg per day.
  • If you have a headache disorder, any medication you take for pain relief even for a different medical condition can cause rebound headaches. People without migraine, can take the same pain relieving medications for other conditions such as back or neck pain without triggering rebound headaches. Yes, that last part seems very unfair.

    Increase Your Turkey Intake

You’ve heard that eating turkey on Thanksgiving can make you sleepy thanks to its tryptophan. Did you know that it can also help you to find relief from migraine pain faster?

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that stimulates dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is the “happy” chemical, one that helps us to feel great, and it is also a key component in the release of serotonin within the body. Serotonin works to relax the body, alleviating anxiety, worry, and negativity. Even more importantly, as tryptophan helps to produce dopamine and, in turn, serotonin, it relaxes the muscles surrounding the brain, soothing the capillaries of the scalp.
