Naproxen Acetaminophen Dull Migraine Pain
By Rachael Myers Lowe, Reuters Health
4 Min Read
NEW YORK – Migraine sufferers may be able to get sufficient relief without turning to prescription drugs, according to two new studies.
The studies, published in the latest issue of the journal Headache, conclude that naproxen and acetaminophen effectively decreased or eliminated pain and reduced migraine recurrence and migraine-associated symptoms to a degree defined as a desirable outcome of migraine therapy by the International Headache Society.
Migraine headache affects as many as 28 million Americans and costs the U.S. economy an estimated $24 billion every year.
About three-quarters of people who suffer from migraines report more than one migraine a month. The symptoms — pain, light and noise sensitivity, nausea — can last from 4 to 72 hours and often lead to missed days from school or work.
Researchers from Thailand analyzed four well-designed previous studies of naproxen at doses of 500 to 825 milligrams for treatment of acute moderate to severe migraines involving 2,168 patients.
Led by Chuthamanee Suthisisand of Mahidol University in Bangkok, the authors concluded that naproxen effectively reduced headache intensity, pain and symptoms within 2 hours of taking it – defined by the International Headache Society as a desirable outcome.
However, because of side effects, not all patients can take triptans, and naproxen offers those patients a non-prescription alternative, Suthisisand told Reuters Health by email.

What Are Analgesics
Analgesics are medicines that help to control pain and reduce fever, and some types also decrease inflammation. These are commonly used analgesics:
Acetaminophen. Although aspirin was most common analgesic for decades, today, the most commonly used overthecounter pain medicine is acetaminophen. This drug is available under the brand name Tylenol® and as a generic with the word acetaminophen on the package. It is often effective for mild to moderate pain. Its safety depends on how it is used. People who take too much or take it too often risk side effects or worse. Acetaminophen is also found in combination with other ingredients in many cold, sinus, and cough medications. If you take these drugs together, the dose can add up.
Aspirin. This is one of the drugs grouped together under the name nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs are a specific group of pain relievers. Some NSAIDs are available over the counter. This includes different brands of aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium and ketoprofen. Prescription strength NSAIDs are also available.
- Ibuprofen is an NSAID. Like other NSAIDs, ibuprofen relieves inflammation, which causes pain, or blocks pain signals going to the brain.
- Some analgesics contain a combination of painkilling ingredients in one pillsuch as aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine.
Is This Drug Safe
Based on current research, doses up to 3,000 mg per day, or 4,000 mg per day under a doctors supervision, are considered safe. However, taking more than 4,000 mg per day may cause liver damage, either as one large dose, or excessive doses over weeks or months. If you already have liver problems, acetaminophen may not be the right drug for you. It can be taken with most medications, foods, and drinks.
Do not take acetaminophen if you have a history of alcohol abuse, or consume alcohol while using acetaminophen. You should also avoid acetaminophen if you have a history of liver disease , severe kidney disease, or phenylketonuria. If you are taking a blood thinner such as warfarin you should talk with your prescriber before starting this medication.
The Food and Drug Administration is also now requiring makers of acetaminophen to warn patients of the potential risk of developing severe skin conditions while taking the medications. These skin conditions are exceedingly rate, including Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, but can be fatal. Call you doctor if you experience reddening of the skin, rash, blisters, and detachment of the upper surface of the skin.

The usual dosage of ibuprofen for adults is 200 to 400 mg orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed. The maximum dosage for ibuprofen brought over the counter is 1200mg. How Do You Alternate Tylenol And Ibuprofen For Pain
If you already deal with stomach issues or develop them while taking ibuprofen and acetaminophen together, to solve this, try alternating each dose. For example, try taking ibuprofen to start then, about four hours later, start your acetaminophen dose. If that doesnt work, you could try alternating daily, such as taking acetaminophen on Saturday and ibuprofen on Sunday and so on.
