Feverfew for migraines has been compared to aspirin and might just be the thing that works to help you reduce, manage or even eliminate your chronic migraine attacks. It has proven to be very effective for lots of migraine sufferers already.
However, my personal experience is that effective natural pain relief for more severe migraines can be much more difficult to find. Impossible even.

What Were Their Migraines Like In The Past
In general, migraines tend to last 4 to 72 hours. However, for these study participants, there was no record in the publication of how long their previous migraine attacks had lasted.
Migraine attacks do resolve by themselves over time, without any medication. Its hard to be sure how much improvement in migraine symptoms, was directly due to the therapeutic effects of either of the treatments.

Has Other Research Reached Similar Conclusions
The authors quote several studies in which ginger has been shown to be effective in treating migraine. These are mostly anecdotal reports from the 1980s and 1990s.
However, a small 2005 placebo controlled, double blind, randomised controlled trial of GelStat and placebo, concluded that migraine sufferers who took Gelstat had significantly better pain relief at 2 hours than a placebo . Notably, there was also a large placebo response.
Why Might Ginger Treat The Symptoms Of Migraine
Ginger is a herb used to treat gastrointestinal symptoms. For example, it is sometimes used to treat morning sickness in pregnancy.
Ginger contains substances called gingerols, which are known to have a variety of health benefits. These are anti-inflammatory, as well as anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-microbial effects. Ginger has been shown specifically to reduce inflammation within nervous tissue and also to help relieve pain.
For example, in a 2001 randomised double blind, placebo controlled, study of patients with knee pain from osteoarthritis, ginger was statistically significantly better than a placebo at relieving knee pain on standing, and after walking.

Fresh Ginger Side Effects And Risks
Eating ginger rarely causes side effects unless you eat too much. If you do, you might get an upset stomach with symptoms of heartburn and gas. Some people may also have a burning sensation in the mouth.
If you have migraine-related nausea, you might find that eating worsens your symptoms. Other options such as sipping ginger ale or a ginger lozenge may be a better choice.

1/8 tsp. of dried ginger powder
1/4 tsp. of freshly grated ginger
1/2 tsp. of freshly grated ginger steeped in hot water for 5 to 10 minutes
1 tsp. of fresh ginger steeped in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes
1 cup of ginger tea from 1 prepackaged ginger tea bag.
Above are six different ways to get the amount of ginger you need to stop a migraine. The exact amounts were produced from over 20 hours of research on ginger.
The doses of fresh ginger and powdered ginger used in research vary widely, but there are reasons why.
Ive summed up how to use ginger to stop and prevent migraines as well as avoid the pitfalls.
How Much is 250 mg of Ginger?
The first problem you will come across is finding a reliable source that converts 250 mg of ginger into teaspoons of dried ginger powder. I came across studies and online references that stated to get 250 mg of ginger you would need anywhere from 1/8 to 1/2 of a teaspoon. Thats a huge difference.
The research varies because the weight of dried ginger and the volume of dried ginger will vary depending on the brand or the process the researchers used to grate and dry the ginger.
Measurement also varies.
For example, I was able to take 1/4 teaspoon of dry ground ginger and packed it into 1/8 teaspoonthe same amount of ginger, but two different measurements.

Intake of ginger depends on the condition. In general, no more than 2-4 grams of fresh ginger should be taken daily in addition to whatever ginger you may get from your diet. However, other doses are recommended for the following conditions:
- Nausea, gas or indigestion: 2-4g of fresh root
- Cold and flue symptoms, headaches: ginger tea
- Arthritis: 2-4g daily use oil or fresh root in a warm poultice or compress and apply to the painful areas.

About The Study Comparing Ginger To The Drug Imitrex For Migraines
A double-blinded, randomized, controlled clinical trial with 100 participants compared ginger to sumatriptan, also known as Imitrex one of the top-selling billion-dollar drugs in the treatment of migraines.
The researchers used one-eighth of a teaspoon of powdered ginger versus a standard dose of the drug. And the results? Both worked equally as fast.
Most participants started out with moderate or severe pain. After taking either the drug or ginger, they were either in mild pain or were completely pain-free. The same proportion of migraine sufferers reported satisfaction with the results, whether they took sumatriptan or ginger.
But with ginger, there were substantially fewer negative side effects. With sumatriptan, people reported dizziness, a sedative effect, vertigo, and heartburn. The only adverse side effect reported for ginger was an upset stomach, and that occurred in only about one out of 25 people.
