What Does The Temporary Pause In Production Of Excedrin Extra Strength And Excedrin Migraine Mean For Those Living With Migraine

    Original article:

Those living with migraine may have to find an alternative over the counter treatment to Excedrin Migraine as it is discontinued until further notice.

Both caplet and gel-tablets of Excedrin Extra Strength and Excedrin Migraine will be temporarily unavailable as GlaxoSmithKline works to resolve an inconsistency in how the ingredients are weighed. The company said in a statement that the production halt is a precautionary measure and that there are no safety risks associated with either product. However, both will be temporarily off the shelves until the issue is resolved.

For people using Excedrin to relieve recurring migraine attacks, this news may be concerning. But what sounds scary, could actually be the ticket to reducing the frequency of your migraine attacks.

Why? Because taking over-the-counter or prescription medications too frequently can actually cause Medication Overuse Headache. Overstimulating the brain pathways involved in reducing pain can create a dependence on medication. Not only does overuse make the medication less effective over time, it also causes pain between attacks and may trigger more frequent attacks. Overuse may even have a hand in progressing the disease from episodic to chronic.

If you rely on these Excedrin products for relief from migraine, the American Migraine Foundation recommends you schedule an appointment with your headache specialist to determine an alternate course of treatment.

    Active Ingredients In Excedrin

Excedrin has three active ingredients. Keep in mind that these are standard Excedrin tablets. Other varieties may include additional ingredients.

    Acetaminophen

This is the same ingredient that is found in Tylenol. Some off-brand versions of Tylenol are simply sold as acetaminophen. It helps to relieve pain, including pain from headaches.

This ingredient can make Excedrin useful for treating other aches and pains as well. Acetominophen is generally considered safe for breastfeeding women as long as it is used in moderation.

    Caffeine

Excedrin contains a very low dosage of caffeine. Each tablet only has 65 mg of caffeine in it. Its considered safe for breastfeeding mothers to consume up to 300 mg of caffeine daily. This means that taking two Excedrin tablets is not going to put your baby at risk.

    Aspirin

The third main ingredient found in Excedrin is aspirin. This ingredient is the one that is a problem for breastfeeding mothers.

Aspirin is classified as a salicylate medication. These types of medication pose a risk to infants. Although it is rare, it can cause a condition known as Reyes syndrome.

Reyes syndrome can result in swelling of the brain and lungs. This is particularly dangerous for infants and often results in infant death.

A small dose of aspirin might not cause this. You may be able to take Excedrin and see no adverse effects. However, every time that you take aspirin its like rolling a dice.

Tablets Provided Better Relief Than Ibuprofen In Head

Can you take ibuprofen after excedrin migraine, can i take ...

FRIDAY, March 31, 2006 Taking two Excedrin Migraine tablets provided greater and quicker pain relief for people with migraines than did two ibuprofen tablets, says a study in the March issue of Headache, the journal of the American Headache Society.

The study of 1,555 patients found that those who took two Excedrin Migraine tablets when they had a migraine that was at least moderate in intensity achieved a higher mean pain relief score two hours, three hours, and four hours after they took the pills than patients who took two ibuprofen tablets.

Excedrin Migraine also provided meaningful pain relief 20 minutes sooner than ibuprofen , according to the study.

These findings have important implications for physicians and their patients, study lead author Dr. Jerome Goldstein, director of the San Francisco Clinical Research Center and Headache Clinic, said in a prepared statement.

These data demonstrate a clear advantage for Excedrin Migraine compared to ibuprofen tablets and reinforce that for most patients suffering from migraine, over-the-counter medications can provide significant, rapid relief, he added.

Nervousness and nausea were the most common adverse events among the patients taking Excedrin Migraine.

More than 28 million Americans suffer from migraines.

A headache can be one of the nastiest and most frequent kinds of aches. To treat your headache, it is first important to understand what causes it. There are generally two kinds of headaches. A primary headache occurs on its own without any other associated medical condition.

The second kind of headache is called a secondary headache, which is caused by some other underlying condition or ailment. In this case the main problem that is causing the discomfort is not really the headache itself. It is usually caused by something that is being neglected or taken care of improperly. This can include taking certain medications, eating the wrong foods, not getting enough sleep, or not doing the recommended exercises.

When it comes to dealing with the symptoms of headache, there are a couple of things that you can do. One of those things is to see a doctor. Tension headaches are a very common kind of headache and can sometimes be relieved by the use of over the counter medicines such as Advil or Tylenol. If the headache comes on suddenly and stays for more than 30 minutes, then seeing a doctor is advised. Doctors can examine the severity and see if the headache is actually a tension headache or not. Doctors will then be able to prescribe stronger medications.

What Are The Acute Treatment Options For Episodic Tension

TTH can be treated with simple over-the-counter analgesics such as aspirin, acetaminophen , ibuprofen , naproxen sodium , and ketoprofen . OTC combination products that contain caffeine provide a useful alternative. Clinical trials demonstrate that the addition of caffeine to a simple analgesic significantly increases pain relief. This effect is referred to as the analgesic adjuvancy action of caffeine.

When OTC medications do not provide adequate relief, prescription drugs can be tried. Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents such as naproxen sodium , 550 mg, or diflunisal , 500 mg, may succeed when OTC NSAIDs could not. Isometheptene-containing capsules are useful and produce few side effects. The butalbital-containing and caffeine-containing products are effective. Minor opioids, including codeine combinations , are also effective. Transnasal narcotics are useful for severe TTHs refractory to other treatments one must be concerned with the potential for overuse of these types of agents. In general, acute medications should not be used more than 2 or at most 3 days per week to avoid rebound headaches.

Can You Take Ibuprofen And Excedrin Migraine Together

EXCEDRIN Tablets , Indication, Composition, Dosage ...

Yes. Aspirin is an NSAID. It works differently than the other NSAIDS.

All the NSAIDs relieve pain and reduce inflammation. They do this by blocking the COX enzyme. This stops the production of chemicals called prostaglandins. The difference between aspirin and non-aspirin NSAIDs is how they block COX. Aspirin binds permanently to COX. The non-aspirin NSAIDs binds temporarily to COX. This difference is the reason aspirin provides lasting protection against platelet clumping. The anti-platelet effects of non-aspirin NSAIDs are much shorter.

Excedrin Overdose Risk No : Kidney Damage

Aspirin can be dangerous to your kidneys in too-high doses, Dr. Grosberg says. The National Kidney Foundation points out that regular use of aspirin doesnt cause kidney disease in healthy individuals, but taking large doses such as more than six or eight tablets a day may reduce kidney function. If you have kidney disease, ask your doctor what pain medications are safest for you.

How can you tell if your Excedrin use has harmed your kidneys? Your doctor can run simple blood tests, such as a serum creatinine test, to see how well your kidneys are functioning, the foundation says.
