How To Get Rid of a Headache or Migraine by Just Drinking Water

Headache can be a symptom of allergies if the sinuses become inflamed or infected as a result. Allergy-related headaches typically include a feeling of pressure in the forehead, face, or behind the eyes, along with typical allergy complaints such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and itching.

Treatment for allergy headaches may include over-the-counter medications for pain relief, along with treatment of the underlying allergy. Your doctor may recommend or prescribe an allergy drug and help you identify triggers to avoid, such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, mold spores, certain foods, and other common allergens.

Although sinus inflammation can cause pain in the face and head, often what people believe to be a sinus headache is actually a migraine attack, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. If youre experiencing this type of pain frequently, discuss it with your doctor. Getting a correct diagnosis can lead to more effective treatment.

Prevent Attacks With Exercise

Exercising during a migraine attack can make the pain worse, but exercising between attacks may help to reduce the number of attacks you have.

Contrary to popular belief, exercise wont trigger a migraine in most people, says Dale Bond, PhD, a professor of psychiatry and human behavior at The Miriam Hospital and Brown Alpert Medical School in Providence, Rhode Island.

In terms of aerobic exercise, we would generally tell our patients to start with walking its easy, its safe, its cheap, and its practical and to do that regularly, says Bond.

That may reduce migraine and prevent migraine attacks through physiological mechanisms for example, by reducing inflammation and improving cardiovascular health, he says.

Apply A Warm Or Cold Compress To Your Head Or Neck

Place a warm or cold compress across your forehead or the back of your neck.

Many of my patients prefer a cold compress, says Lawrence C. Newman, MD, director of the division of headache at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City and a board member of the American Migraine Foundation.

Cold can have a numbing effect. It distracts the brain from the migraine, says Good. Youre stimulating other nerve endings where youre putting the compress.

To protect your skin, keep a cloth between your skin and an ice pack, and if you use a commercial cold pack, make sure there are no leaks where chemicals could escape and potentially harm your eyes, according to the University of Michigan Health.

Some people may prefer a warm compress, Dr. Newman says. Heat can help relax tense muscles. You may also try taking a warm bath or shower.

What Are The Four Stages Or Phases Of A Migraine Whats The Timeline

The four stages in chronological order are the prodrome , aura, headache and postdrome. About 30% of people experience symptoms before their headache starts.

The phases are:

  • Prodrome: The first stage lasts a few hours, or it can last days. You may or may not experience it as it may not happen every time. Some know it as the preheadache or premonitory phase.
  • Aura: The aura phase can last as long as 60 minutes or as little as five. Most people dont experience an aura, and some have both the aura and the headache at the same time.
  • Headache: About four hours to 72 hours is how long the headache lasts. The word ache doesnt do the pain justice because sometimes its mild, but usually, its described as drilling, throbbing or you may feel the sensation of an icepick in your head. Typically it starts on one side of your head and then spreads to the other side.
  • Postdrome: The postdrome stage goes on for a day or two. Its often called a migraine hangover and 80% of those who have migraines experience it.
  • It can take about eight to 72 hours to go through the four stages.

    What Medicines Help Relieve Migraine Pain

    For mild to moderate migraines, over-the-counter medicines that may help relieve migraine pain include:

    • aspirin
    • acetaminophen

    People who have more severe migraines may need to try abortive prescription medicines. A medicine called ergotamine can be effective alone or combined with other medicines. Dihydroergotamine is related to ergotamine and can be helpful. Other prescription medicines for migraines include sumatriptan, zolmitriptan, naratriptan, rizatriptan, almotriptan, eletriptan, and frovatriptan.

    Use Meds In Moderation

    Pharmacy shelves are stocked with pain relievers for all kinds of headaches. To get the most benefit with the least risk, follow the directions on the label and these guidelines:

    • Choose liquid over pills. Your body absorbs it faster.
    • Avoid ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs if you have heart failure or kidney failure.
    • Do not give aspirin to a child under age 18.
    • Take painkillers as soon as you start to hurt. Youâll probably beat it with a smaller dose than if you wait.
    • If you get sick to your stomach when you get a headache, ask your doctor what might help.
    • Ask your doctor what to take to avoid a rebound headache, which is pain that sets in after a few days of pain relievers.

    And be sure to talk to your doctor about what headache symptoms you should not treat at home.

    How Can I Feel Better

    Most headaches will go away if a person rests or sleeps. When you get a headache, lie down in a cool, dark, quiet room and close your eyes. It may help to put a cool, moist cloth across your forehead or eyes. Relax. Breathe easily and deeply.

    If a headache doesn’t go away or it’s really bad, you may want to take an over-the-counter pain reliever like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. You can buy these in drugstores under various brand names, and your drugstore may carry its own generic brand. It’s a good idea to avoid taking aspirin for a headache because it may cause a rare but dangerous disease called Reye syndrome.

    If you are taking over-the-counter pain medicines more than twice a week for headaches, or if you find these medicines are not working for you, talk to your doctor.

    Most headaches are not a sign that something more is wrong. But if your headaches are intense and happen often, there are lots of things a doctor can do, from recommending changes in your diet to prescribing medicine. You don’t have to put up with the pain!

    Try A Different Temperature

    There are two tried-and-true methods that most of us turn to when facing an injury and its pain: hot or cold therapy. While it might seem odd to consider placing an iced or heated pack on your head, it can make all of the difference in just a few minutes.
