What Can I Take For A Migraine While Pregnant

Headache | Migraine | How To Get Rid Of Headaches

And now for the meds. As we saw above, many conventional migraine medicines arent recommended while youre pregnant, including ergotamine.

Unfortunately, ibuprofen and other so-called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs arent advisable for use during pregnancy either. So, whats safe?

  • Acetaminophen is really your best bet. This general painkiller is considered safe during pregnancy. Many pregnant women use it without any harmful side effects. But doctors advise that you should only use it when necessary.
  • Sumatriptan is a dedicated medication for migraines and cluster headaches. Studies havent found evidence that sumatriptan, or other triptans, can negatively affect you or your baby while pregnant. But do tell your doctor if youre planning to take sumatriptan.

Talk to your doctor about what they recommend taking for migraines during pregnancy. Theyll be able to find the solution thats best for you.

Go For An Elimination Diet

This diet is designed to help you discover foods that cause headaches naturally and remove them as fast as possible. Coffee, citrus fruits, chocolate and alcohol or aged cheese will cause migraines, so removing them from your diet can help more than you might imagine. Learn more about the elimination diet and it might work for you very well. Drinking tea also works.

Talk To Your Doctor About Migraine Medication

There are several FDA-approved migraine medicines you can buy over-the-counter at the drugstore, including Excedrin Migraine and Advil Migraine . If those don’t do to the trick, talk to your doctor about triptans, a class of prescription drugs that you take as soon as you feel your migraine coming on. In addition to tablets, these are available in nasal sprays and rapid-relief injectables, which work best when you want quick pain relief, says Dr. Silberstein. There are several different kinds of triptans your doctor can discuss the potential side effects, and which might be best for you. The FDA has also approved a new therapy called non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation , in which you use a small electrical device to stimulate the vagus nerve in your neck; research suggests that nVNS can provide migraine relief within 30 to 60 minutes, but the device is expensive and not usually covered by insurance. Ask your headache doc for more information.

Why Weather Triggers Migraines

How To Get Rid Of A Migraine Fast

There may be different reasons for why certain weather events trigger Migraine. High humidity and extremely dry conditions may exacerbate dehydration, one of the most common and preventable Migraine triggers. Bright lights and sun glare activate a condition called among many people with Migraine.

Why lightning and barometric pressure are associated with Migraine isn’t completely understood. It may be that environmental changes that affect the body’s homeostasis or set-point may predispose someone to develop Migraine.

Headache specialist Dr. Vince Martin is the lead author on a handful of studies on weather-related Migraine. In an interview during the 2018 Migraine World Summit he explained:

“Rising barometric pressure can trigger a migraine attack in some individuals. Falling barometric pressure can trigger it in some individuals. But the two often do not cross. So generally speaking, you’re either sensitive to falls or you’re sensitive to rises but not both.

As for lightning, Dr. Martin and researchers suggest a couple of different theories. More study is needed on medical and natural remedies for headaches caused by weather.

How To Relieve Eye Pain From Migraine

According to traditional Chinese medicine , the eyes relate to the internal organs: the iris is the liver; the corners of the eyes relate to the heart zang; the upper and lower eyelids are related to the spleen; the pupil the kidney. There are more, but let’s not get too detailed here.

While using acupuncture needles is considered to be more effective, you can also use your fingertips for massaging these points right at home, when you need to.

I’ve written all about an acupressure point routine you can use for migraines here -;Want A Good Migraine Pressure Point Routine?

Here are some good points to help relieve eye migraine:

Give Yourself A Massage

To relieve any pain and pressure happening in your neck or the back of your head, Dr. Datta recommends slowly massaging your shoulders and neck with a warm compress. Together, this combo loosens up the muscles in your neck and shoulders.

Meanwhile, if you’re feeling pain mainly in your temples or the front of your head, you can take two fingers and slowly but deeply massage your temples in a circular motion.

And Be Proactive With Healthy Lifestyle Choices

I talk about this on almost every page of this website. Do not underestimate the power of making healthy lifestyle choices. Routines are proven to reduce migraine attacks.

So create and maintain routines around: sleep, meal times , and exercise.

I can also recommend protecting your eyes whenever you can. Watch computer screen use… glare and not blinking enough cause eye strain. I have a few pages on this already:

Migraine Triggers During Pregnancy

HOW TO GET RID OF A MIGRAINE

Hormonal change is a common trigger for women with migraine.;During pregnancy, oestrogen levels increase sharply, while progesterone levels decrease and rise again towards the end of the pregnancy.

Overall migraine improves during pregnancy especially during the second and third trimesters. This improvement may be due to the increased oestrogen levels and increased levels of natural pain-killing hormones .

These hormones are several times higher during pregnancy, and though the relief from migraine attacks they provide might last the whole pregnancy, the levels settle back down after delivery, normally allowing migraine attacks to return.

However, not everyone will see an improvement in their migraine, especially in the early weeks of pregnancy. For some women, their migraine is unaffected. Some women experience worsening migraine during pregnancy although this is rare.

During breastfeeding, stable oestrogen levels continue to be protective against having headache again after pregnancy.

However you are affected, it can help to identify any migraine attack triggers that you have, such as lack of sleep, stress, missed meals and dehydration. Keeping a headache diary may help pinpoint your triggers so you can avoid those things. Log when the headache happened, what triggered it, and how long it lasted. Common triggers include but are not limited to:

  • Stress

Complementary And Alternative Medicine

Non-drug treatments certainly can be helpful, and massage, acupuncture, relaxation and biofeedback have been found to be useful by some. Some women also find applications of heat or cold to the head can be useful.

Many women also prefer to take complementary and alternative medicines such as homoeopathic and herbal remedies rather than traditional medicines whilst they are pregnant, considering them to be milder.

However, some complementary treatments can have an unwanted effect on your pregnancy just as conventional medicines can. For instance, some women find aromatherapy massage very helpful, and may be unaware that some essential oils need to be avoided.

Reflexology treatment is not always advisable during pregnancy, and all complementary medicines should be taken under the supervision of a qualified practitioner. Feverfew should not be used during pregnancy.

The best advice is to take as few medicines as is realistically possible for you, and at the lowest effective dose, if needed. The use of any drugs or herbal remedy to treat your migraines during pregnancy and whilst breast feeding is a balance of risk and benefits, taken with medical advice. Any medication you do take should be recorded in your pregnancy notes.

Try Hot Or Cold Therapy

If youve ever put an ice pack on an injury or a heating pad on a sore back, you know the power of temperature therapy. This can also help when you have a migraine. You may need to experiment to decide what feels best for you. Some people find that an ice pack applied to the head offers soothing, numbing relief. This is particularly helpful if sun or heat brought on your migraine.

Other people find a heating pad or hot shower to be therapeutic during an attack. Its worth trying hot or cold therapy when your next migraine hits. It can safely and effectively complement your medication.

What Causes Migraines

A migraine can be best described as a headache on steroids.

“The pain is often described as throbbing or pulsing and usually begins on one side of the head, and typically last from 4 hours up to 3 days,” says Zubair Ahmed, MD, neurologist at the Cleveland Clinic.

Migraines are worsened by physical activity, light, sound, and even smell. You may also experience nausea and/or vomiting.

They can also be accompanied by auras, which affect about 20% of migraine sufferers.

“Auras include visual, sensory, cognitive and/or speech changes,” says Jay. “Auras last between 5-60 minutes prior to the migraine.” It’s said to look a little something like this:

Have A Treatment Plan

A solid plan can give you the power to relieve a migraine before the pain becomes severe. This may be the most important weapon you have against future migraine attacks.

Your plan will likely include taking medications when you feel a migraine coming on. Knowing which medication to take can lower your stress level because it removes some of the guesswork of what you should do. Your plan may include over-the-counter pain relievers, prescription medications, or some combination of the two. You should work with your doctor to develop a migraine treatment plan thats right for you.

Test Your Powers On Migraine Weather Today

Before you get too bummed out about the weather you can’t control, consider this. It might just be a hidden superpower. In a way, those with Migraine are more in tune with their environment. Could this have actually been an evolutionary advantage?

While this is just a theory, I like the idea of being a human barometer. It makes me different, a little special, just in case the Weather Channel calls to offer me a job.

Track your Migraine attacks as you track the weather and see if it’s a trigger for you. If it is, start forecasting so you can adjust your exposure to triggers you can control.

Add A Little Pressure

Pin on health tips

Although it may feel as though your head is under an incredible amount of pressure and pain, getting in touch with certain pressure points on the body can alleviate your discomfort.

When you begin to feel the first tinges of a migraine, place a bit of pressure on your craniosacral system. By pressing with your fingers on certain migraine-specific spots, you can force your brain to relax and rest, restarting it from a pain-free place. Though it increases pressure in the cranium, it works to send the tension that’s building in your brain elsewhere.

What Causes Migraines During Pregnancy

If you experienced migraines prior to your pregnancy, you are more likely to experience them while pregnant. Even if youve never had a migraine, your chances are higher due to the changing of your hormones during pregnancy.

But your changing hormones arent the only thing responsible for this. There are plenty of other triggers that can contribute to migraines, including but not limited to:

  • Fatigue
  • Higher body temperatures
  • Nasal congestion

Any combination of these triggers can result in a migraine. But for women who experienced migraines in tandem with their menstrual cycle prior to pregnancy, we actually have good news!

Your migraines may decrease in intensity and frequency as your pregnancy progresses. Since estrogen will be at a high level throughout your 9 months, this trigger wont affect you as much.

When To Go Home

Sometimes, it is not possible to get rid of migraine symptoms at work. In fact, according to the Migraine Research Foundation, more than 90% of people with migraine are unable to work during a migraine headache. So, if medications and other remedies do not help, it may be necessary to go home.

In these situations, it can help to have an advocate in the workplace. This is someone who can recognize when symptoms are becoming unmanageable and speak up for a persons needs when they are unwell.

An advocate could:

  • notify a supervisor about the situation
  • make sure that the person gets transport home
  • handle any tasks or responsibilities left behind
  • tidy and shut down the persons workspace
  • check in with them once they get home

Ask someone who is trustworthy and reliable and who understands migraine if they would be willing to do this.
