Finding Balance And Accepting Our Limitations

Common Cause of Fatigue, Weight Gain & Migraines: Annalisa’s Story

There are clearly many issues that lead to migraines tipping the scale one way or another. Given that reality, the key might be to strive for a balance between accepting where we are and striving for health as much as possible.

In the end, perhaps the best we can do is to gently accept that migraine is a part of our life, even with the attendant limitations and pain. This acceptance might serve to let us off the hook so that we dont feel as bad when we cant regularly exercise or eat a balanced diet. Feeling bad about feeling bad gets us nowhere.

Weight Loss Tactics That Can Trigger Migraine Attacks

Migraine triggers are internal and external stimuli that can trigger a Migraine attack or a severe headache. Common Migraine triggers include skipping meals, strenuous exercise, hormones, weather, and stress. Just as each person experiences Migraine differently, different people respond to different triggers.

Let’s take a look at some of the common triggers that can interfere with Migraine relief and ruin weight loss plans. Learning about triggers is the first step to identifying your own. Avoiding your Migraine triggers and maintaining a healthy body weight will help keep the pain at bay.

Having Obesity May Increase Your Risk For Chronic Migraine

Chronic migraine is when a person has 15 or more days per month of headache with migrainous features, according to the Migraine Research Foundation. The risk of progressing from episodic migraine to chronic migraine is between 1.5 and 3 percent per year.

Overuse of acute migraine medication, depression, and increasing headache day frequency are all associated with an increased risk of developing chronic migraine, according to an analysis published in Headache journal in March 2019.

Obesity might also belong on that list.

Theres been some epidemiologic research that suggests that obesity might increase progression from episodic to chronic migraine, says Bond.

One of the common theories is that obesity is a low-grade systemic inflammatory state that might exacerbate the neurovascular response of migraine, he says.

That might be one mechanism by which obesity contributes to increased frequency of attacks, as well as increased risk for chronic migraine, says Bond.

Drug Forms And Strengths

Topamax comes in two different forms:

  • A tablet that you swallow. Its available in strengths of 25 milligrams , 50 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg.
  • A sprinkle capsule. The capsule can be swallowed whole or opened to sprinkle on a spoonful of soft food and swallowed. The capsule is available in strengths of 15 mg and 25 mg.

If you have trouble swallowing Topamax tablets, talk with your doctor about using Topamax sprinkle capsules instead.

A Cause Or A Correlation

Whenever new research like this comes out, one big question is whether the results are a factor of correlation or causation.

Healthline reached out to Miranda Willetts, a clinically trained registered dietitian who specializes in weight management and works with people who experience migraines, for her thoughts.

The main takeaway for me is that this is just another reason to make your health a priority by engaging in behaviors that will help you to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight, especially if you suffer from migraines, she said.

I would have more of an inclination to say what we are seeing here is a correlation, she added, but Im with the authors more research is needed to determine if there is a true correlation and to figure out what might be driving that.

Willetts said she is encouraged that the meta-analysis is moving the knowledge forward and setting up future researchers to come in and design studies to better evaluate the mechanisms driving this association.

I think it would be interesting to see research studies designed to measure actual body fat via a DEXA scan versus relying on self-reported height and weight data to better categorize research participants and remove some limitations, she noted.

Some Weight Loss Methods May Make Your Migraine Worse

There are some things that a person with migraine may want to avoid when starting a weight loss program, says Bond. We want to make dietary changes gradually rather than all at once, because some individuals may have dietary triggers that they might not be aware of, he says.

Weight loss methods such as intermittent fasting, an eating pattern in which a person restricts their eating to certain hours of the day, are probably not a good idea for people with migraine. Fasting can lower a persons blood glucose level, which may trigger a migraine attack, says Bond.

Reducing your sugar intake may help with weight loss, but replacing it with an artificial sweetener such as aspartame may be counterproductive, since some people report that artificial sweeteners trigger migraine attacks for them, according to Migraine Again. In addition, some research has shown that they are not helpful in achieving weight loss.

Get Moving: The Benefits Of Aerobic Exercise

Medications that cause Weight Gain

Exercise and migraines have a strong, two-way relationship. A lack of exercise increases the risk of having migraine attacks by approximately 21% in adults and 50% in adolescents. But regular and consistent aerobic exercise not only reduces the chances of having migraine attacks, it also makes them less painful and disabling when they do occur. Although its hard to generalize, those who regularly exercise for about 40 or 50 minutes on 3 days per week seem to enjoy the most benefits.

What Happens With Epilepsy And Migraine

Epilepsy and migraine are both neurological conditions. With epilepsy, you have seizures. With migraine, you have headaches, among other symptoms. But the conditions are considered to be linked, and many people have epilepsy and migraine together.

The causes of epilepsy and migraine arent fully understood. But with both conditions, it seems that nerve cells in your brain are oversensitive to certain triggers, such as flickering lights or hormones.

The trigger causes electrical signals to build up in the nerve cells in your brain. This causes them to fire inappropriate signals to other nerve cells. These nerve cells then pass on signals to other parts of your body. The increased electrical signaling can lead to a seizure in people with epilepsy. In people with migraine, it can lead to auras and headaches.

How Aimovig Is Metabolized

Many drugs, herbs, and supplements are metabolized by enzymes in your liver. But monoclonal antibody drugs, such as Aimovig, are not usually processed in the liver. Instead, this kind of drug is processed inside other cells in your body.

Because Aimovig isnt processed in the liver like many other drugs are, it generally doesnt interact with other drugs.

If you have any concerns about combining Aimovig with other medications you may be taking, talk with your doctor. And be sure to tell them about all prescription, over-the-counter, and other medications you take. You should also tell them about any herbs, vitamins, and nutritional supplements you use.

Weight Gain After Topamax

Prescription medications & weight gain oac summer 2013 (1 ...

When someone stops taking Topamax, its possible that they might experience weight gain over time, especially if they havent been combining Topamax with healthy lifestyle changes. In an observational study done by the National Library of Medicine, discontinuation of Topamax for at least six months showed a trend for returning to a baseline weight. So people may be more likely to return to what they weighed before they started taking Topamax, but this may take some time.

This return to a baseline weight may happen because the body is no longer experiencing a reduced appetite and faster metabolism. The best way to make sure youre able to keep weight off after stopping Topamax is to adopt healthy lifestyle changes that will support you on your weight loss journey.

How Do I Tell If Gabapentin Is Making Me Gain Weight

When it comes to medication-related weight gain, you may notice an increase in pounds soon after you start taking the drug possibly within 6 months. But the amount of weight gained can vary from person to person.

If you recently started taking a medication like gabapentin and are noticing weight gain, ask yourself these three questions:

  • Have I changed my diet recently?
  • Has my physical activity reduced?
  • Have I been feeling more stressed lately?
  • If you answered no to all three of these questions, you may want to consider whether any medications might be the reason for your weight gain. Keep in mind that if you take any medication besides gabapentin, theres a chance that they also could potentially be to blame.

Nonetheless, if you have concerns over bothersome weight gain, its recommended that you speak to your healthcare provider.

What Are The Side Effects Of Flunarizine

The main side effects of flunarizine are tiredness, drowsiness, weight gain and low mood.

    • Tiredness and drowsiness can be reduced by starting with a low dose and taking it at night. The dose will then be increased gradually once your child becomes tolerant to these effects. Some patients experience a second wave of tiredness after several weeks or months and it would be advisable to either try a lower dose or use the medicine on alternate days. This should be discussed with your doctor
    • Possible weight gain is caused by an increase in appetite and can be avoided by your child following his or her usual diet without any increase in portion size. In our experience, this happens in one in ten children taking the medicine.
    • If your child develops low mood or depressive symptoms, the medicine should be discontinued. You should take advice from your family doctor whether specific treatment may be necessary for the treatment of depression if the symptoms do not disappear within one month.

For instance, not all blood pressure medications will make you gain weight. Remember, the amount of weight gained can vary depending on the person and type of medication.

    An Option In Migraine Prevention

Does simvastatin cause weight loss or weight gain

    Hans-Christoph Diener, MD, PhD

Dear colleagues, I am Christoph Diener, a neurologist from the University of Essen in Germany. Today’s topic is migraine prevention.

People who have frequent migraine require preventive therapy. Without prophylaxis, these patients may take too much acute medication, and medication overuse headache could develop. We have a number of established therapies for migraine prevention, such as beta-blockers valproic acid topiramate amitriptyline and for chronic migraine, botulinum toxin.

The problem with most drugs is their side effects. The most frequent side effect of amitriptyline, propranolol, and valproic acid is weight gain. Patients, particularly women, are looking for a preventive therapy that does not lead to weight gain. Some years ago, a small trial compared candesartan with placebo for migraine prevention and favored candesartan. Now a new trial has investigated the effectiveness of candesartan in migraine prevention and has been published in Cephalalgia.

This trial was a complicated crossover trial, with 3 treatment periods lasting 12 weeks each. For the first period, a total of 72 patients received candesartan 16 mg/day for the second, they received slow-release propranolol 160 mg/day and for the third, they received placebo.

I am Christoph Diener, a neurologist from the University of Essen in Germany. Thank you for listening.

Which Migraine Medications Are Safe To Use While Breastfeeding

Although it is safest to avoid all medications if breastfeeding, this is not always feasible. Therefore, to avoid unwanted side effects in the breastfeeding infant, medications should be used at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest duration. Generally, the same medications used during pregnancy can be continued after delivery and while breastfeeding. An exception is aspirin which may cause bleeding problems and Reye’s syndrome in the nursing baby and should therefore be avoided. Mothers who must take medications should also consider not breastfeeding.

Divalproex should not be used in patients with liver or pancreatic disease.

If You Have Migraine And Are Overweight Committing To Weight Loss Can Help You Manage Your Attacks And Prevent Them From Getting Worse

Maintaining healthy body weight is not easy, especially when dealing with a disease that robs us of time and energy. However, it is especially important for those with episodic Migraine to keep their BMI in the healthy range, because obesity is one of the risk factors for Chronic Migraine.

Losing weight can be even more difficult for people who have Migraine because certain weight loss efforts like some diets, supplements, and exercises can actually trigger Migraine attacks, compelling us to toss our efforts out of the window.

Luckily, there are many healthy weight loss methods available that will produce results and maintain health without triggering an attack.

    Dosage For Preventing Migraine Headaches

Topamax is recommended for preventing migraine headaches* in adults and in children ages 12 years and older. The usual recommended dosage is 50 mg taken once in the morning and once in the evening.

Your doctor will gradually increase your dosage to this level over the first 4 weeks of treatment. This allows your body to get used to the medication and helps reduce the frequency and severity of side effects.

The dosage is usually increased as described below, but it may be raised more slowly if needed:

    • Week 1: 25 mg every evening
    • Week 2: 25 mg every morning and 25 mg every evening

    • Week 4: 50 mg every morning and 50 mg every evening
