Migraines: A Disabling Illness
The World Health Organization named migraine as one of the 10 most disabling illnesses. Along with the pain of a migraine, many patients live in fear of the next attack, known as cephalalgiaphobia.
Typical best practice convention among headache specialists is to prescribe a backup rescue or abortive drug to patients, says Tariq. In case the first-line drug fails to help or if its not available, patients can use a second-line drug.
There are different types of drugs available to help treat migraines. Some examples include:
- Triptans, which work by constricting specific blood vessels that help block pain pathways in the brain
- Dihydroergotamine , which helps narrow the blood vessels around the brain and is typically used to treat migraine pain that persists for two or more days
- Gepants, which inhibit the protein calcitonin gene-related peptide . Ubrelvy , the first gepant approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration , should be available later this year.
Migraine sufferers who need an alternative or additional treatment should talk to their doctor, neurologist, or a headache specialist about these medication options, says Tariq.
Although it might be challenging for patients to be without Excedrin, it could be a good time to step back and look at the root causes of their migraines, especially if they are having more than one a week, says Murinova.
What Happens During A Migraine Attack
Many scientists believe that migraine headaches occur when arteries to the brain constrict, then dilate, resulting in the throbbing pain of a migraine headache. It isn’t known what causes the blood vessels to constrict and dilate, but abnormally low blood levels of a chemical substance called serotonin may trigger the contractions. Migraine attacks can be disabling. More than 80% of migraine sufferers report at least some headache-related disability: 50% or more report mild or moderate disability, such as being unable to work or engage in usual daily activities and about 30% report severe disability, sometimes requiring bed rest.

What Are The Sinuses And Sinus Headaches
Sinuses are air-filled cavities located in the forehead, cheekbones, and behind the bridge of the nose. The sinuses produce a thin mucus that drains out of the channels of the nose. When a sinus becomes inflamed, often as the result of an allergic reaction, the inflammation will prevent the outflow of mucus and cause a pain similar to that of a headache. See a doctor if you are experiencing sinus headaches to determine the cause.

How Does Sex Relieve Headaches
Researchers from the University of Muenster in Germany surveyed 800 migraine and 200 cluster headache sufferers about their sexual habits during pain spells. Of the third who reported sexual activity, 60 percent of the migraine camp reported some degree of pain relief associated with sex. Usually, sex obliterated their symptoms entirely. Among participants with cluster headaches, 37 percent said that sex helped somewhat, while 90 percent attested to middling or even total relief. The study authors attributed the sex effect to endorphins, hormones that flood the system during physical activity.
The same people who release endorphins from extreme sports activity, so a triathlon or marathon, it might be that these are the patients who release endorphins during sexual activity, neurologist, headache specialist, and researcher Stefan Evers told Live Science.
The release of oxytocin, another natural painkiller, at orgasm probably doesnt hurt either. Unfortunately, though, what might hurt migraine-havers is having someone else touch and otherwise disturb them while theyre resting and waiting out the storm. For these people, Evers suggested masturbation because, as he told LiveScience, having an orgasm in any way shape or form will help.
Excedrin Overuse: Too Much Of A Good Thing
Excedrin is one of the top drugs people use on their own, but it can lead to trouble with overuse, says Dr. Murinova. This is a drug that, if people are taking it 10 days a month or more, they can get into a condition called medication overuse headache, she says. If a person is treating three or more headaches a week with Excedrin and have stress, they could very easily be causing themselves to have more headaches.
In addition to more headaches, long-term use of Excedrin or a replacement combination on a frequent basis can also result in damage to kidneys, liver, and stomach, according to Tariq. Patients who take Excedrin or combine drugs as a replacement for Excedrin should not use them frequently, he adds.

Migraines Are More Than Just A Bad Headache Heres How This Over
Migraines are a complex neurovascular disorder. What does this mean? It means that the nerves and blood vessels are involved in the pathophysiology of a migraine. A migraine headache arises from activation of certain nerve cells which results in the release of inflammatory chemicals. This causes inflammation and swelling of the blood vessels in the headactivating the pain receptors that transmit pain signals to the brain and create the sensation of pain.1
When the telltale signs of a migraine strikethe pulsing or throbbing pain on one or both sides of your head, sensitivity to light or sound, nausea, and even a loss of visionit can be downright scary.1 After all, this type of head pain is often debilitating, and symptoms can last anywhere from four to 72 hours.
Excedrin® Migraine contains three components: acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine, which help target pain in different ways. Research has demonstrated that not only is this combination of ingredients effective in treating migraines, but it is also significantly more effective than the individual components alone.2, 3 For exactly how it works, read on.
Stop That Splitting Headache

30 million Americans suffer from migraines each year
Half of those can’t do household chores or attend social functions because of pain
Migraines are a neurological disorder with triggers ranging from stress to certain foods
About once a month, usually around my period, I start feeling sort of off. My neck gets tight and achy, and I cant think as clearly as usual, like my mental gears are gummed up.
That slow-brain feeling, Ive learned over the years, is not a good sign. It means Im about to get a migraine. Its my cue to be careful to steer clear of red wine and sugar, two sure triggers when Im in that sensitive state, and to get enough rest since lack of sleep can tip me over the edge, too.
Even so, if anything in my routine is out of whack if I dont eat often enough, or if I become overly stressed I can count on one or two days of misery. Head-pounding, nauseated, verge-of-tears misery.
Sound bad? Compared to many of the 30 million migraine sufferers in the U.S., my experience is fairly mild. Several years ago, the massive American Migraine Prevalence and Prevention Study found that half of those who struggle with migraines cant do household chores and a third forgo family or social activities.
Theyre more common than we used to think, Charles says. Nearly 48% of all women will have a migraine at some point in their lives.

I Fall Asleep Easily But Often Wake Up In The Middle Of The Night With My Mind Racing Do I Have Insomnia
Possibly. Insomnia covers difficulty getting to sleep as well as waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to get back to sleep. While even good sleepers awaken five to 15 times each night, most fall asleep within a few seconds and forget that they have been awake. Studies show that at least half of all sleep problems are caused by such issues as marital stress, job stress, anxiety, or depression. If you are having trouble falling back to sleep, pay attention to the thoughts running through your mind. They may help you find the cause of your problem.
What Is Biofeedback Can It Really Reduce Pain
Biofeedback is one of the relaxation techniques commonly used in headache centers. Simply put, a machine is used to provide feedback to sufferers about muscle tension, which is associated with pain. Using that information patients learn to reduce the muscle tension in their bodies. With practice, this effect may be achieved without the machine. Studies have shown that people who learn biofeedback techniques can reduce pain by up to 50%-70%. For more information, contact The Biofeedback Certification Institute of America at 420-2902.

I Have Heard That Caffeine May Not Be Safe Is That True
Caffeine has been an ingredient in both OTC and prescription drug products for many decades. Medical research has demonstrated that caffeine is a safe and effective addition to the combination of acetaminophen and aspirin in medications for relief of pain when used at the appropriate dose. The acetaminophen-aspirin-caffeine combination is approved and clinically proven to be effective and well-tolerated for the relief of both migraine and tension-type headache pain, but as always, you should follow package directions.
The recommended dose of this product contains about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. Limit the use of caffeine-containing medications, foods, or beverages while taking this product because too much caffeine may cause nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness, and, occasionally, rapid heartbeat.
Caffeine has been found to enhance the pain relieving function of aspirin and acetaminophen when used in combination as in Excedrin® Extra Strength.
