What Migraine Sufferers Need To Know About Excedrin As Production Is Halted

Managing your migraines just got a little harder. GlaxoSmithKline is temporarily halting the production and distribution of two popular migraine-relieving products: Excedrin Extra Strength and Excedrin Migraine.

The move to temporarily pull both drugs stems from inconsistencies with the ingredients, which are acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine.

In a statement provided to Yahoo Lifestyle, GlaxoSmithKline said: Patient safety and product quality are our utmost priorities at GSK. Through routine quality control and assurance measures, we discovered inconsistencies in how we transfer and weigh ingredients for Excedrin Extra Strength Caplets and Geltabs and Excedrin Migraine Caplets and Geltabs. Based on the available data, GSK believes that the product does not pose a safety risk to consumers. However, as a precautionary measure, GSK Consumer Healthcare voluntarily implemented a temporary discontinuation of production and distribution.

The statement continued: This is a short term issue for which we expect production to begin again shortly. In the meantime, other Excedrin products are available along with other pain-relieving drugs, but dosages may differ. Consumers should consult their pharmacist for the most suitable alternative product.

So what should migraine and headache sufferers do in the meantime?

What About Tylenol Aleve Or Aspirin For Migraines

Excedrin Migraine and Advil Migraine are two of the most popular OTC treatment options for migraines, but , , and plain are also options.

Weve discussed situations where plain acetaminophen may be useful, even though it is more effective in combination with other migraine-fighting ingredients. The same is true of plain aspirin it is more effective when taken as a combination treatment.

Naproxen in Aleve is an NSAID just like ibuprofen. It has a similar dosing schedule but takes up to 2 hours to start working. Ibuprofen also tends to have milder side effects than naproxen. So you may be better off choosing ibuprofen as your migraine treatment option if you decide to use an NSAID.

Children, older adults , pregnant women , and other vulnerable populations should take extra care when consuming caffeine.

For most people, a few pieces of chocolate or a pain reliever arenât likely to contain enough caffeine to significantly affect sleep quality. That said, following a mindful diet can help you sleep better and may even help you avoid bad dreams.

I have always been a fan of Excedrin for headaches because it relieves headache pain but back and body? I bought this specific Excedrin Back & Body Pain Reliever and tried it out with my back pain and body pain. So I rate my body pain, elbow and wrists, occasional hip pain at around a 3, very minor dull ache. The Excedrin Back & Body did help and it relieved the minor aches I had. Now I rate my back pain at around a 7 at the worst of times and Excerdrin Back & Body didnt help much by itself. I honestly couldnt tell that I had taken a pain reliever. Now Ive used this product for headaches, menstrual cramps and it works great! In all honesty theres nothing really special in this pain reliever except acetaminophen and aspirin and those are very cheap inexpensive pain relievers that I already have in my home. This was the one time and only time Ive bought this specific Excedrin product and I dont feel theres anything special about it. It helps with pain, but so does the generic acetaminophen and aspirin.

This causes inflammation and swelling of the blood vessels in the headactivating the pain receptors that transmit pain signals to the brain and create the sensation of pain.1

When the telltale signs of a migraine strikethe pulsing or throbbing pain on one or both sides of your head, sensitivity to light or sound, nausea, and even a loss of visionit can be downright scary.1 After all, this type of head pain is often debilitating, and symptoms can last anywhere from four to 72 hours.

These Two Pain Relievers May Be Similar But Excedrin Has A Powerful Combination Not Found In Tylenol

When a headache begins, it can disrupt your whole day if you dont treat it, but Excedrin Extra Strength starts to work in 15 minutes for some.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that Excedrin Extra Strength relieves headaches better than Tylenol® Extra Strength.1 Both Excedrin Extra Strength and Tylenol® Extra Strength include acetaminophen, an analgesic that relieves pain and reduces fever. But Excedrin Extra Strength contains two additional active ingredients, aspirin and caffeine.

Aspirin targets pain by blocking the production of pain signaling chemicals called prostaglandins. Caffeine is referred to as an analgesic adjuvant. This means it helps boost the effects for certain pain relievers. In the case of Excedrin, caffeine boosts the effects of aspirin and acetaminophen making those medications up to 40% more effective.2,3,4

    What Are The Side Effects

Acetaminophen and aspirin can sometimes cause severe skin and/or allergic reactions. Avoid taking this medication if you are allergic to either, and seek immediate medical attention if you develop skin blisters, rash, hives, facial swelling, or trouble breathing.

More common side effects, which typically go away once you stop taking the medication, include:

    • Diarrhea
    • Passing urine more often
    • Trouble sleeping

The amount of caffeine in Excedrin Migraine is similar to that of a cup of coffee, so youll want to moderate your intake while taking this medication since too much caffeine can cause nervousness, irritability, and trouble sleeping.

In addition, Excedrin Migraine contains an NSAID medication, which can cause stomach bleeding. Stop the medication and call your provider if you notice bloody or black stools or stomach pain that does not get better, or if you are vomiting blood or feeling faint. NSAIDs can also cause ringing in your ears or hearing loss. But this tends to be reversible once the medication is stopped.

The medication also contains acetaminophen, which can be harmful to your liver. It is best not to exceed the maximum daily dosage, take additional acetaminophen products, or consume 3 or more alcoholic beverages a day while taking this medication.

    Phases Of A Migraine Attack

EXCEDRIN Tablets , Indication, Composition, Dosage ...

Often a migraine attack involves distinct phases, though people can experience them differently, says Roderick Spears, MD, a neurologist and headache specialist at Penn Medicine in Philadelphia.

Prodrome Phase This first phase of migraine can occur hours to days prior to the attack, says Dr. Spears. It typically involves a change in mood and energy certain cravings or excessive yawning can be a sign of prodrome, he says.

People sometimes confuse these prodrome, or premonitory, symptoms, with migraine triggers. Thats to say, a person who craves chocolate as a prodrome symptom may mistakenly believe that consuming chocolate triggered the migraine attack, according to MigraineAgain.

Aura About 25 to 35 percent of people with migraine have aura, says Spears. The most common aura is a visual change with a kaleidoscope-like phenomenon that can last anywhere from five minutes to an hour but usually much less than an hour, he says. Other aura symptoms may include tingling sensations, numbness, garbled speech, and clumsiness or weakness.

Headache Phase This stage can last 4 to 72 hours, and in most patients, its marked by a headache on one side of the head thats throbbing and pulsating in quality. Typically, the pain is described as moderate to severe, says Spears.

The headache phase is also associated with becoming sensitive to the environment, he adds. Light, sound, and odor sensitivity are common, as are nausea and vomiting, he says.
