New Survey Shows Cbd Has Positive Impact On Migraine

CBD for Migraines: Does CBD help With Migraines & Is It Safe To Use With Other Migraine Medicines?

For the last couple of years, Axon Relief has been surveying people with migraine before they take Axons specific formula of CBD, and again after 30 days of using the oil.

Using a clinically-validated questionnaire called the Headache Impact Survey , Axon Relief measured the impact of a headache on a persons life. The results are showing an overwhelming majority of headache sufferers could benefit from taking CBD oil.

At the end of the 30-day trial period, 86% of respondents reported decreased headache impact.

The survey is significant, because while there is an abundance of anecdotal accounts of people using CBD oil with good results for migraine, there is very little in the way of standardized results.

One hundred and five people with migraine participated in the 30-day survey.

The CBD oil used in the study is made in Utah by Axon Relief. During the trial period, users of Axons CBD oil experienced an average of 3.8 fewer headache days when compared to before they used the oil, for a 23% reduction.

Our goal is to explore if our CBD isolate can help people who suffer from chronic headaches, like migraine. The data showing CBDs effect on migraine is the first of its kind, and very promising, says Ben Rollins, founder of Axon Relief.

Is Cbd The Same As Hemp

No. Hemp and CBD are both made from the Cannabis Sativa family of plants, but come from two different varieties of the species.

Hemp is a long-standing industrial product that people have grown for hundreds of years. As a matter of fact, 3rd President of the United States Thomas Jefferson grew hemp. Its useful for making all kinds of products, such as clothing, rope, and food.

Under the 2018 Farm Bill, Cannabis Sativa plants containing less than .3% THC are classified as hemp, so hemp has very little THC.

Manufacturers of CBD products typically use the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant to make their products. Hemp plants contain more CBD and almost no THC. Because of this, its easier to extract pure CBD oil from hemp without getting THC.

Hemp is the ideal plant from which to derive pure, safe CBD without the risks or high of THC.

Migraines And Medical Marijuana

Throughout the course of history, marijuana has offered successful treatment and relief for those suffering from migraines. Research has shown that a deficiency within the endocannabinoid system may actually be the underlying cause of migraines. Medical marijuana offers a natural treatment to relieve the pain and symptoms associated with migraines. In fact, studies have even shown that the use of medical marijuana can potentially eliminate migraines in some patients. Research and existing evidence indicates that medical marijuana is a potentially effective option for migraines.

Cbd Oil And Migraines: How Long Has It Been Used For Treating Migraines

CBD oil and medicinal cannabis use dates back thousands of years to treat various ailments.

As a matter of fact, Chinese history makes the first mention of marijuana in 2900BC when Emperor Fu Shi and emperor Shennong documented its healing properties for malaria, gout and rheumatism. Cannabis is one of the 50 fundamental herbs in Chinese medicine and used to treat multiple disorders.

As noted above, it works on the endocannabinoid system present in the body.

Medicinal cannabis and CBD oil has been used for thousands of years to treat health conditions and promote wellbeing.

CBD stands for cannabidiol and is one of the 400+ compounds found in the cannabis plant. Its the most abundant cannabinoid along with THC, but unlike THC, it has no psychoactive properties, meaning it wont get you high.

CBD is a modulator to the endocannabinoid system . It acts on the two sets of cannabinoid receptors to help the ECS maintain the chemical balance in the body and brain.

In essence, CBD signals these receptors to produce more of the bodys own cannabinoids and makes them more available for the body by blocking the enzyme responsible for their breakdown.

Studies have shown that CBD can work as a painkiller, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotectant, hence the impressive number of its health benefits.

But how could CBD help with migraines? To answer that question, we need to examine the relationship between CBD and the endocannabinoid system closely.

Effective Strategies And Treatments

A healthcare provider is likely to recommend proven treatments and other approaches to care for someone with migraine.

Identifying and avoiding triggers can reduce the frequency of migraine episodes. This involves different things for different people, but it may look like:

  • practicing stress management techniques
  • avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and other dietary migraine triggers
  • finding ways to get regular high-quality sleep

Also, while no one treatment plan works for everyone, various medications can reduce the frequency of migraine episodes and the intensity once they start.

Some approved migraine treatments include:

  • over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as acetaminophen

The Endocannabinoid System: How Is It Involved

Cannabis and its tinctures have been used to treat headaches, including migraines, for hundreds, possibly thousands of years. Thats because our bodies own natural endocannabinoid system plays a crucial role in who suffers from migraines.

The ECS is our largest regulatory system, controlling everything from pain to appetite. The body produces its own cannabinoids and also has cannabinoid receptors in nearly every cell in the body. Anandamide, sometimes known as the bliss molecule, is the bodys natural version of THC. Interestingly, a 2007 study found that regular migraine sufferers had below average levels of anandamide. This has led some researchers to believe migraines are caused by an endocannabinoid system deficiency.

Neurologist and cannabinoid researcher, Dr. Ethan Russo, used this evidence along with other studies to create his Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency theory. Basically, this theory says that a lack of natural endocannabinoids can cause an array of health problems, including migraines and fibromyalgia.

Another study done in Colorado in 2016 had similar results. This study found that regular cannabis use decreased the frequency of migraines from 10.4 headaches each month to only 4.6. Whats more, 11.6 percent of participants reported regular cannabis use stopped their migraines completely.

How Much Cbd To Take For Perimenopause Migraines

We don’t have solid research on migraines specifically.

Let’s look at the range to get better acquainted.

A starter dose is usually 25-30 mgs to see how your body responds.

  • Sleep help is showing around 160 mg.
  • Neurogenesis for anxiety, depression, and the like peak at 300 mg.
  • 600 mg has been used for public speaking social anxiety episodes.

Here’s what we do know.

Beyond 300 mg, CBD starts to boost a pathway called TRPV.

TRPV is actually tied to pain sensitization.

This is why the anti-pain effects of CBD appear to be on a bell-curve.

Up till about 300 mg and starting to trail off as we get closer to 600 mg.

This is an interesting effect that most websites don’t really go into!

For that reason, migraines might respond best between 100-300 mg.

Again, test on yourself and for all that’s good in the world, look at Magnesium Glycinate or Citrate .

Again, I take 200 mg 3 times a day and as needed for extreme stress.

It’s literally your stress mop in the nervous system and perimenopause is a flood!

Next, a very important piece I found out the hard way.

So Cannabis Plants Are Like A Mix Of Many Things

CBD Oil for Migraines – How CBD Helps Treat Headaches – Dr. Lynn Marie Morski

Yes. Talking about cannabis is very misleading, as different strains contain different chemical mixes. In medicine, drugs are usually pure. They contain one chemical product in controlled quantity for which the properties have been studied on animals and then humans. From a medical perspective, dealing with a plant that contains unknown amounts of many chemical products is difficult. Research principles are difficult to apply to cannabis.

Hemp Bombs Cbd Oil 750 Mg

Like many companies on this list, Hemp Bombs offers a wide array of products. Aside from the oil tinctures, it also manufactures vape cartridges, pet products, topical creams, lotions, and balms, among other things. It even has edible products like gummies, capsules, and lollipops!

Even if we only consider the companys oil tinctures, theres plenty of variety. For one, there are six strength levels ranging from 125 mg to 5000 mg of CBD per fluid ounce. To give us some perspective on those numbers, that would mean that a single serving can contain between 2 and 83 mg of CBD. The potency weve chosen to recommend comes with 750 mg per bottle or 12.5 mg per serving.

The company fuses their all-American hemp extract with a mixture of grapeseed and MCT oils. On top of that, people can choose to spice up their tincture with five unique flavors, including Acai Berry, Chocolate Mint, Peppermint, Watermelon, and Orange Creamsicle. But, of course, if anyone prefers the natural taste of temp and the aforementioned carrier oils, they can always choose the unsweetened version of the product.

In any case, the Hemp Bombs tincture is certainly the best CBD oil for migraines if one appreciates variety. However, none of these products have a full spectrum of cannabinoids or even a broad one. The company only deals with CBD isolate, making its products a bit mild, but still effective.

Pros:

  • CBD isnt as effective without THC and terpenes

The Absence Of Regulation

For individuals who are suffering from migraine and wants to treat it with CBD for migraines, Dr. Silberstein emphasized the importance of ensuring the use of only pure products. For states where CBD is legal, you can easily find safe and genuine products. You can also refer to the local dispensaries to determine the quality and origin of the CBD product.

Dr. Silberstein is discouraging people from getting CBD for migraines in states or countries where CBD use is illegal or unregulated. Mainly because illegal CBD oil might have synthetic THC that is absolutely bad for patients with migraines. Aside from that, there are some legal implications towards people who are purchasing it on a place where it is prohibited, thats why it is very vital to talk with your doctor and to go through your state and local laws.

How Can You Treat Migraines

Depending on the severity of the migraine, you can get rid of it by using relaxation techniques or medicinal treatments:

  • Stress management
  • Seizure medication
  • Antidepressants

However, no treatment is perfect and some may not even work for the majority of people. And thats exactly why CBD oil is becoming the go-to treatment for those that are dealing with migraines, no matter their intensity.

How Does Cbd Work

Does CBD Help Migraines?

How CBD works in the human body is still a bit of a mystery. While studies have shown the promise of CBD in treating epilepsy and some types of chronic pain, we still know very little about how it actually works.

Initially, there was some indication that the bodys endocannabinoid system and its receptors actually bound with CBD like a lock and key. The endocannabinoid system is thought to play a role in the immune function, along with other things like memory, anxiety, and mood regulation. Further studies, however, have shown that there is likely no binding taking place.

Although these initial theories have largely been dismissed, its still possible that CBD could interact with the endocannabinoid system in some other way. However, this is just one of many possibilities, and is still being studied.

Different Types Of Cbd

There are many factors to consider when trying to determine the form of CBD that will work best for you. First and foremost, you want to consider what youre using CBD for, and always make sure you get a quality product.

Topical CBD treatments have been shown to be very effective for migraines. These creams, oils, and gels are easy to apply and fast-acting. If you are taking migraine medications, CBD theoretically should not interact with them at all since it works via an entirely different mechanism when compared to common migraine prescription and over the counter medications. However, always consult your physician before combining CBD with any medication you are taking.

There have been no human studies to date regarding the best dosing method for migraine. In general, there are five forms of CBD.

CBD comes in creams, oils, salves, and balms, to name just a few forms. Topicals are frequently used to relieve joint pain and sore muscles. There are many cannabinoid receptors in the skin, so this form of CBD is generally fast-acting.

Tinctures are extracted using several techniques including the CO2 method and the ethanol method. All of the extraction techniques are designed to preserve as many of the cannabinoids as possible. Tinctures are generally taken orally, but can also be mixed into food or drink. The fastest acting tinctures are those taken sublingually . When taken in this fashion, the effects kick in after 15 to 45 minutes.

How Cbd Oil Compares To Alternative Treatments For Headaches

A few potential treatment options for headaches include the use of ginger, essential oils, and aromatherapy.

A study in 2013 compared the efficacy of ginger and sumatriptan, a conventional drug for migraine relief. One hundred migraineurs were randomly given either ginger powder or sumatriptan and were observed.

Two hours after intake, the severity of headaches on both groups was said to decrease significantly.

The researchers of the study also learned that the efficacy of ginger powder was similar to sumatriptan. However, ginger powder had fewer adverse effects than sumatriptan.

Using essential oils, mainly from peppermint and eucalyptus, are also said to help alleviate headache disorders.

The effects of the essential oils from these two herbs were investigated in thirty-two healthy subjects.

Four distinct test preparations were used with a combination of peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and ethanol. These mixtures were applied to the foreheads and temples of the subjects using a sponge.

The combination of peppermint, eucalyptus, and ethanol provided physical and mental relaxation. However, they had little impact on pain.

Meanwhile, the subjects that were given a mixture of peppermint and ethanol experienced significant migraine pain relief.

Massage therapy was the focus of a 2002 study that assessed its efficacy in alleviating chronic tension headaches.

Human subjects received structured massage therapy treatment that targeted their neck and shoulder muscles.

The Downside Of Poor Cbd Quality

Given the explosive market for CBD, some businesses will try to capitalize on this supplements popularity, at the expense of unsuspecting users. This often leads to disappointments as low-quality strains cause severe and consistent side effects, including respiratory issues, allergies, and even headaches. While less reputable CBD brands sell their products at lower prices, be aware that you may ultimately pay for that discount with your health.

How Much Cbd Should I Take For Migraines

CBD Oil for Migraines & Headaches

The correct dosage of CBD will depend on the concentration of the oil and your body weight. The general recommendation is to take one serving per day, but you can adjust as needed. When taking a dropper of CBD oil, for example, it should be placed under your tongue or mixed with water. This allows the CBD to be absorbed sublingually and enter your bloodstream quickly. You should start small, with just a few drops of CBD oil daily or even twice per day as needed until you find your comfortable dose. If you have stomach sensitivities to CBD you should stop taking it.

How Cannabis Can Help With Migraines

For those who regularly experience migraines, life carries unique challenges. Seemingly harmless sensory stimuli, like bright lights, strong aromas, or loud noises, can trigger unbearable pain. Stress, neck tension, and even jet lag can set a crippling migraine in motion too. This intense pain can be accompanied by a loss of sensation, nausea, or alarming visual changes. The disruption associated with chronic migraines can be so constant it can even erode ones sense of self.

Although drugs commonly prescribed for the prevention and treatment of migraines help some individuals, they dont offer relief for all migraineurs. Similar to many heavy-hitting medications, a host of unwanted side effects may ensue with use. However, evidence is accumulating that cannabis may be an effective treatment for migraines and chronic headaches.

A November 2019 study published in the Journal of Pain reported that cannabis could reduce migraine and headache severity by 50%, and although tolerance can increase, cannabis use does not exacerbate headaches or migraines over time. Concentrates appeared to offer more significant relief than flower.

So now we know cannabis can ease migraine symptoms, what are the most effective ways to harness its benefits?

Titration: Learning Your Dose

Just as important as finding the appropriate product for your needs is determining your appropriate dose. Some customers will find that a minute amount of product satisfies their needs. This is no surprise to medical marijuana patients who are advocates of using a very small dose for maximum effect or microdosing. If this works for you, the great advantage is savings. This is yet another reason to follow professionals advice to go low and slow. Microdosing is particularly popular with patients who need to medicate during work hours and cannot afford to be intoxicated.

For people who need a stronger dose, that is easy to come by. It is important to be aware of the estimated time for onset of effect from the cannabis or cannabis product. This way you can wait for the expected amount of time to feel effects and maybe a while longer before taking more. This moderation is just a smart way to consume, whether your use is for recreation or therapy. This practice, combined with Greenlight Approved products, helps you make the most of your experience while reducing the chance of accidental overconsumption. Even if you get a bit carried away and overindulge in cannabis, it will not endanger your life the way other medications can.
