Our circadian rhythm functions as our internal clock and one of its main functions is to regulate our sleep-wake cycle. When the time for sleep approaches, your circadian rhythm starts to send signals to your body prompting the system to prepare for sleep. Part of this process is lowering your core body temperature.

One way to stimulate the lowering of body temperature is by taking a shower. If you take a cool or cold shower, it will naturally start to reduce your body temperature and will send a signal to your brain that sleep time is fast approaching. Even though it may wake you up a bit mentally, this adjustment in body temperature is still more ideal for sleep. Drowsiness will eventually take over and will ease you off to a deep and peaceful slumber.

Conversely, if you take a warm or hot shower, it may increase your core body temperature while youre in the bathroom and shortly after. However, the quick change in temperature on your skin will cause a rapid cool down that is similar to showering in cooler water.

When You Have A Tension Headache

Hot or cold showers or baths may relieve a headache for some people. You may also want to rest in a quiet room with a cool cloth on your forehead.

Gently massaging your head and neck muscles may provide relief.

If your headaches are due to stress or anxiety, you may want to learn ways to relax.

Over-the-counter pain medicine, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen, may relieve pain. If you are planning to take part in an activity that you know will trigger a headache, taking pain medicine beforehand may help.

Half Of The Patients Reported A Clinical Benefit

In the first application, 13 patients reported a clinical benefit 25 min after the cold therapy. Objective response was observed in 10 patients including three patients who had a complete response. However, the other half did not respond and needed to use analgesics 25 min after cold therapy. Mean VAS scores of patients decreased from 7.89 ± 1.93 to 5.54 ± 2.96 in 25 min, 4.62 ± 3.16 in 1 h, 3.92 ± 3.32 in 2 h and 3.42 ± 3.55 in 3 h after cold therapy in first attack. VAS scores at the twenty-fifth minute, first hour, second hour and third hour of treatment were found to be significantly lower compared to VAS scores before treatment . In patients with a clinical benefit, the mean number of attacks was 3.30 ± 1.37, the mean pretherapy VAS score was 8.00 ± 2.04 and the duration of migraine attack was 21.23 ± 6.75 h. In patients who did not have any clinical benefit, mean attack number was 3.07 ± 1.03, mean VAS score before the therapy was 7.69 ± 2.01 and duration of migraine attack was 19.00 ± 7.95 h. These were not significantly different between patients with or without clinical benefit .

How To Relieve A Headache

There are many causes of a headache and while there is no absolute cure, there are ways to find relief. Before turning to the medicine cabinet you can:

Specific Characteristics Of Cluster Headaches

Males are afflicted more than females by a 2.5 to 1 ratio. The onset of the clusters is usually between the age of 20 and 45, but there are many cases of clusters in teenagers and occasionally clusters begin in the 50s or 60s and rarely in the 70s. Women tend to have an older age of onset for their cluster headaches than men. Occasionally a brief aura may occur. The prevalence is 0.4% of the population. See Table 1 for a summary of characteristics.

The pain of the cluster attack is extreme and starts very quickly, usually without an aura or a warning. Within minutes, it becomes very severe. Although usually unilateral, the pain changes sides in 10% to 15% of patientseither during a cluster cycle or the next cycle may see pain on the opposite side. The pain itself is excruciating, described in various manners as sharp, stabbinglike my eye is being pulled out and occasionally, throbbing.

Intranasal Lidocaine For Cluster Headache

Lidocaine spray, as a 4% lidocaine solution, has been used since the mid-1980s for cluster headache. I have found it only mildly effective for most patients and almost never adequate by itself. However, intranasal lidocaine does provide sufficient relief to warrant its use. Lidocaine is very safe with minimal side effects. When used in conjunction with ice and one of the first line abortives, the lidocaine spray can add 10 to 30% relief.

I put 4% topical lidocaine in a plastic nasal spray bottle. The patient is then instructed to lie in the supine position, extend their head back 30 to 45 degrees, turn the head toward the side of the pain and spray two or three sprays of the lidocaine intranasally. This may be repeated, but I usually limit the lidocaine sprays to six or eight in a 24-hour period. If the nasal passage is blocked, several drops of 0.5% phenylephrine may be used prior to the lidocaine.

Alternatively to the spray bottle, 1 ml of 4% topical lidocaine may be slowly dropped, via a dropper, into the nostril on the side of the pain. Side effects are minimal and may include numbness in the throat or, rarely, nervousness or tachycardia.

What Causes A Headache

    Drink some coffee. I’ve found a swift application of caffeine can prevent the beginnings of a headache from turning into a full-blown migraine about 10% of the time. Drink it quickly, and drink it black — trust me, adding dairy is a mistake. Iced is best if you have the option.

    Cool down. After shotgunning some caffeine, I start trying to find a way to lower my body temperature. If I’m at home, I get into a very cold shower, concentrating the water on my lower back and the back of my knees, where it will cool down my body the fastest.
