Blue Light Glasses: Hype Or Effective Treatment

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recognizes digital eye strain, but stops short of asserting that blue light causes eye damage. See the following excerpts from a 2021 article published on the AAO website:

Long hours staring at digital screens leads to decreased blinking. Blinking less sometimes causes a series of temporary eye symptoms known as eye strain. But these effects are caused by how people use their screens, not by anything coming from the screens. The best way to avoid eye strain is to take breaks from the screen frequently.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology does not recommend blue light-blocking glasses because of the lack of scientific evidence that blue light is damaging to the eyes.

In short, there are other factors in play that contribute to the eye strain youre experiencing. In other words, your discomfort probably isnt caused by the blue light itself.

Which Blue Light Glasses Block More Harmful Blue Light

Most people with recurring light sensitivity symptoms understand that blocking blue light through the use of tinted glasses can have a positive effect on their health, but they may not have realized that the wavelengths being targeted and the amount being filtered are critical for their effectiveness. We compare some of the most popular blue light glasses available and show just how much blue light they are filtering at critical wavelengths.

As you can see, TheraSpecs filter significantly more blue light at the vital 480nm wavelength than typical blue light glasses brandsin some cases as much as 25 times more.9

However, it is not just enough to filter more light at a single wavelength. As we discussed previously, a wide range of blue light commonly emitted from artificial and natural sources can be detrimental to even healthy eyeslet alone to a person with an underlying cause of photophobia. Clearly, TheraSpecs also outperform other blue light eyewear at every single wavelength tested in the range between 430-500nm. This means they provide greater protection across a wide spectrum of light that is known to be harmful for people with light-sensitive conditions.9

Independent testing from other light-filtering experts supports TheraSpecs indoor blue light blocking glasses as the most protective against the blue light hazard when compared with these other glasses.10,11

Do Clear Or Slightly Yellow Glasses Help With Migraine

Blue Light Glasses Cured My Headache

Nearly clear or slightly yellow tinted blue light glasses have not been clinically proven to help with migraine symptoms nor photophobia. Most of these blue light glasses only block light in the early 400nm to 450nm blue light range. According to the science, they don’t block nearly enough nor do they block at the right wavelengths of light for individuals who are most sensitive to light.

While Avulux is not a simple blue light lens, when compared to a typical blue light lens Avulux absorbs blue light in the upper 450nm-500nm blue light range at an even higher rate than most any other blue light lenses available while also filtering blue light in the earlier 400nm-450nm range. Avulux’s precisely engineered lenses do this so efficiently that it doesn’t distort your color perception.

Can Blue Light Glasses Help With Eye Strain

It may surprise you, but many eye issues that are caused by digital screens arent due to blue light.

Dr. Bajic says many people experience eye discomfort from digital screens, but most of the issues actually fall under a term called computer vision syndrome . Some symptoms include:

  • Watery eyes.
  • Itchy eyes.
  • Hard time keeping your eyes open.

CVS is a broad range of eye strain and discomfort issues. Your eyes are constantly shifting focus and moving while looking at the screen. Plus, the glare and contrast can be tough on your eyes. So, although you may be experiencing eye irritation from a long day working on your computer, your eye discomfort is not directly from the blue light itself.

When we stare at a digital screen or device for too long, were not blinking as often as we normally would, which causes the cornea to become dry and irritated, says Dr. Bajic. When we focus our eyes on something close up, like a screen or even a book, our eyes are strained and contracted, which can cause eye discomfort. But if you look ahead to a distant object, our eyes relax.

Tips For Dealing With Digital Eye Strain

While blue light glasses may not help, here are a few things you can do to provide relief to your eyes.

Wear light sensitivity glasses

If someone has light sensitivity due to migraines or other light-sensitive conditions, they can get an FL-41 tint, which is a better option than blue light glasses, says Dr. Bajic.

The FL-41 tint, which ranges from a pinkish color to an amber-like color, filters out wavelengths of blue and green. Those colors are bothersome to patients with light sensitivity. A study cited photophobia, the medical term for light sensitivity, as the most bothersome symptom for those with migraines.

You can find options for light sensitivity glass online and at most optometrists. While FL-41 tint might not be covered by most insurances, check with your provider.

Practice the 20-20-20 rule

By looking a further distance away, it forces the eyes to relax by breaking accommodation, says Dr. Bajic. It also helps you to blink again at your bodys normal rate.

Use artificial tears

Using eye drops throughout the day can help keep your eyes lubricated while you work at a computer.

Regular artificial tears should be used no more than four times a day, as the eyes can be sensitive to the preservatives in them. If someone needs to use them more often, they should switch to preservative-free artificial tears.

Sit an arms length away from your screen

People should sit a comfortable distance away from screens, says Dr. Bajic.

How To Get Rid Of Blue Light Headache And The Health Effects Of Blue Light

The issue with artificial blue light is that there is a myriad of ways it can be affecting your vulnerability to chronic migraine attacks. Suffering from migraines is not only uncomfortable due to the accompanying chronic pain, but it can also affect your ability to lead a normal happy life.

It is particularly common for those who experience headache disorders to not be able to work, and have to migrate to a dark bedroom away from bright light until the headache pain or migraine subsides.

This is not ideal for most human beings who also have many duties and responsibilities such as kids, and work!

Unfortunately, despite headache disorders being so common – there is no cure. However, there are recommendations and lifestyle changes that you can make which can minimize your risk of getting a migraine attack.

The usual protocol is the take over-the-counter medication, or embark on lifestyle changes to reduce your possible triggers.

However, migraine medication isnt necessarily a fool-proof long-term answer, and its certainly not ideal for those who experience nausea and sickness with the onset of a chronic headache!

But by eliminating over-exposure to blue light – you can reduce your environmental and biological risks which contribute to headaches and migraine pain.

Research shows that over-exposure to blue light can affect melatonin levels, and whilst this may not seem initially relevant to headaches – it surprisingly is.

The Distinction Between Migraine And Blue Light Glasses

Not all blue light is the same. Neither are blue light glasses or migraine-prevention eye wear. Blue light blocking glasses are intended to filter out blue-violet light, primarily violet. According to the most recent studies, their actual effect on eye strain and other symptoms is unknown.

Migraine sufferers must understand that the wavelengths of light most commonly associated with headaches are not violent but blue and amber. Thus, while “blue light blocking glasses” are intended to alleviate eye strain, they are not designed to block the exact wavelengths of light known to aggravate and trigger migraine attacks.

Do Blue Light Glasses Work What The Research Says

What you need to know before buying blue-light glasses

A study recently published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology tested 120 computer users with symptoms related to blue light exposure. They were given a 2-hour computer task, and received either blue-blocking eyeglasses or clear glasses to wear during that time. All participants were led to believe they had received blue blockers.

After the 2-hour task, there was no difference in participants eye strain symptom score between those who wore real blue blocking glasses and those who received the placebo. In short, blue light blocking glasses were not proven to be any better for eye strain than regular clear lenses. Unfortunately, this means that they wont help with headaches resulting from eye strain.

It should be noted that this study was conducted on blue blockers only not on migraine glasses. And as youre about to see, there is a big difference between blue blockers and bonafide migraine glasses.

Why You Shouldn’t Wear Sunglasses Or Dark Colored Tints

If the lens is too dark, your eyes adapt to the darkness and eventually allow in more light. You then become more light sensitive. Preventing too much of any one color of light from entering your eyes will cause your color perception to be off. Maybe your world will turn red, green, or yellow.

Distorting your color perception would be uncomfortable and youd soon find it isnt an ideal solution if you want to enjoy a movie or work on your computer. Living your life in a unicolored world may quickly become dull.

Not only that, but a lens that distorts your color perception in this way may be removing too much of the beneficial light spectrum. Remember, green light was found to be beneficial. Not all light is bad.

How We Picked And Tested

To find some stylish pairs of blue-light-blocking glasses, we scoured both prescription and non-prescription online sellers, Instagram influencer feeds, and forums. We also asked our friends, family, and colleagues for their chicest recommendations. We found 22 over-the-counter pairs with plastic or wire frames, ranging in price from $2 to $30. We narrowed down our testing pool by reviewing the frame styles, materials, color choices, brand reputation, third-party reviews, and prices. We also considered frames from brands we recommend in The Best Places to Buy Glasses Online. And we preferred lenses that were described as colorless or nearly colorless, as opposed to dark-orange polarized lenses.

For this guide, we had three people test 13 pairs of glasses while working on our laptops and scrolling through our friends social feeds on our phones. We paid special attention to style, quality, fit, comfort, and lens glare. Some glasses seemed comfortable at first but felt too heavy or tight after a few hours. Some had distracting glares that suddenly became very noticeable during a video call. We steered clear of glasses with easily scratched lenses, twisted arms, and rigid hinges .

How Migraine Glasses Fight Light Sensitivity

Now that weve explored some of the benefits that glasses for migraine sufferers offer, we need to look at the exact process behind how they work. The primary principle behind migraine relief glasses involves the FL-41 filter, which can filter out the majority of blue-green light thats responsible for most migraine attacks.

In fact, the filter is so effective, most people that use these types of computer glasses report a significant improvement in eye sensitivity, a reduction in the frequency and severity of episodes, and an overall increase in quality of life. Since so many people today spend a lot of time in front of a screen, having an option to filter out the wavelengths of light that cause migraines makes a huge difference and has helped many people lead healthier and more productive lives.

Now, you may be asking if the migraine light sensitivity glasses have any negative impact, for example, when being worn indoors, but the truth is studies have shown them to be completely safe to be used both indoors and outdoors for as long as necessary. While some people may need a short adjusting period to get used to wearing them, that shouldnt cause any discomfort, and many people start seeing the difference from day one.
