Can Using Birth Control Pills Make My Migraines Worse

A Trick To Get Rid Of A Stress Headache Easily

In some women, pills improve migraine. The pills may help reduce the number of attacks and their attacks may become less severe. But in other women, the pills may worsen their migraines. In still other women, taking birth control pills has no effect on their migraines.

The reason for these different responses is not well understood. For women whose migraines get worse when they take birth control pills, their attacks seem to occur during the last week of the cycle. This is because the last seven pills in most monthly pill packs don’t have hormones they are there to keep you in the habit of taking your birth control daily. Without the hormones, your body’s estrogen levels drop sharply. This may trigger migraine in some women.

Talk with your doctor if you think birth control pills are making your migraines worse. Switching to a pill pack in which all the pills for the entire month contain hormones and using that for three months in a row can improve headaches. Lifestyle changes, such as getting on a regular sleep pattern and eating healthy foods, can help too.

What Else Can Trigger Migraines

While stress is a major contributor to migraines, its only one of a number of triggers even weather changes can bring on a migraine episode. Recording your migraine attacks and what preceded them may help you to narrow down your triggers, especially if they include food or certain activities. Other potential migraine triggers include:

  • Hormonal fluctuations, like getting your period.
  • Certain medications, including the combination pill.
  • Alcohol.
  • Lack of sleep or changes in sleep patterns, like jet lag.
  • Certain foods, especially ones containing nitrates.
  • Dehydration.

Treating Other Stressful Conditions That Trigger Migraine

Other health conditions can cause significant stress, which triggers migraine attacks in people susceptible to migraine. The most common examples include post-traumatic stress syndrome, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and physical or sexual abuse. This makes it important to find a treatment that helps reduce the symptoms and stress of these other conditions.4

What Does The Research Say

Though what exactly causes migraines hasnt been established, researchers believe they may be caused by changes in the levels of certain chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin. Serotonin helps regulate pain.

A 2014 study found that people with migraines who experienced a reduction in stress from one day to the next were significantly more likely to have a migraine the next day.

Researchers believe that relaxation after high levels of stress was an even more significant trigger for migraine than the stress itself. This is referred to as the let-down effect. Some suggest this effect is linked to other conditions, such as getting a cold or flu.

Youll likely first notice symptoms of stress before the symptoms of a migraine. Common symptoms of stress include:

  • upset stomach
  • constipation
  • frequent yawning

Some people experience migraine with aura, which occurs after the prodrome stage. An aura causes vision disturbances. In some people, it can also cause problems with sensation, speech, and movement, such as:

  • seeing flashing lights, bright spots, or shapes
  • tingling in the face, arms, or legs
  • difficulty speaking
  • temporary loss of vision

When the pain of the headache begins, its referred to as the attack phase. Symptoms of the attack phase can last from a few hours to a few days, if left untreated. The severity of symptoms varies from person to person.

Symptoms may include:

  • dizziness
  • feeling faint or lightheaded

    Stress takes many forms, and is often the hidden culprit behind migraines. To get at the root cause of chronic migraines, you may be surprised to learn that we need to look at how stress might be disrupting our digestion, neurotransmitters, hormones, and immune system.

    Headaches come in many different forms: tension, cluster, sinus, and yes, migraines. A headache is head pain that presents in different ways throughout your head for a variety of causes.

    For example, head pain can be caused by emotional stress, physical stress, such as tight neck muscles, neck vertebrae misalignment, or inflammation in the TMJ joint, and/or allergies, sinus congestion and pressure, viral infections, toxin exposure , and more. In worst case but very uncommon scenarios, head pain can be caused by growths or tumors in the head.

    Identifying where the pain is coming from goes a long way towards helping to identify the cause of the head pain. For this reason, your practitioner will likely ask you if the pain is on the left side, right side, temples, front, back, or everywhere. The location of the pain is one of the keys to understanding the cause.

    What is most common, however, is that headaches and specifically migraines are related to stress.

    Ask about antianxiety medication, particularly a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor , suggests Dr. O’Neal.

    This type of medication targets serotonin pathways that can help decrease both anxiety and migraines, she says.

    Antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors may also be used.

    DonĂ¢t let stress get out of control. Take these tips to manage or prevent it:

    • Get some exercise. Make time for a 30-minute daily walk.
    • Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Add more fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grains.
    • Write out your stress. Start a journal. Let your emotions and thoughts flow out so you can deal with them instead of letting stress build up.
    • Get enough sleep each night. About 85% of people with migraines say they sleep poorly. Stress can keep you awake at night. When you sleep well, your body and mind can recharge for the next day. Set a regular bedtime routine and stick to it.

      This acupressure point is great to treat headaches too. Its located at the very top of your nose, just above and right between your eyes. Its on either side of the spot where the bridge of your nose meets the inside of your eyebrows.

      1.Using both hands, instead of making small circles just use your index fingers to apply firm but gentle pressure to both points at once.

      2.Hold the pressure to at least 10 seconds, maximum 15.

      How Can I Tell If I Have A Migraine Or A Sinus Headache

      Many people confuse a sinus headache with a migraine because pain and pressure in the sinuses, nasal congestion, and watery eyes often occur with migraine. To find out if your headache is sinus or migraine, ask yourself these questions:

    • Moderate-to-severe headache
    • Nausea
    • Sensitivity to light
    • If you answer yes to two or three of these questions, then most likely you have migraine with sinus symptoms. A true sinus headache is rare and usually occurs due to sinus infection. In a sinus infection, you would also likely have a fever and thick nasal secretions that are yellow, green, or blood-tinged. A sinus headache should go away with treatment of the sinus infection.

      The Effects Of Stress On Migraine Patients

      What can people with migraine expect if they also have high stress? Research gives us insight into these important side effects. For instance, when a person is exposed to repeated stressors, actual physical changes can occur within the body. Chronic stress has the ability to change how a person responds to tense or difficult situations as well as change brain structure and networks.3 These changes represent one of the theories as to why stress can actually lead to migraine attacks as well as particularly affect those with chronic migraine.

      In fact, those with chronic migraine have been shown to experience higher levels of perceived stress overall and also had lower quality of life.4 They are also more likely to have poor outcomes to acute treatment.6

      Specific symptoms may also worsen with increasing stress,6 such as:

      • Bilateral migraine pain
      • Phonophobia

      Photophobia is particularly interesting because it is an independent factor in increasing stress and anxiety overall, especially for those with migraine.
