How Important Is Alcohol As A Trigger Of Migraine

Migraine patients consider many foods capable of triggering migraines. The food-trigger relationship is frequently equivocal. In fact, lists of triggers induce the migraineur to equate their migraine attack with a food just consumed. This is similar to crediting a new symptom to a drug they are taking at that moment. With full review, the cause and effect may or may not be true.

A food may be likely considered a trigger of a migraine attack If a) a strict time relationship exists between the consumption and the start of headache, or b) that this link is not occasional. From retrospective patient reports, it is very difficult to make sure a link exists. In fact, especially in the drug-new symptoms example, a possible link to other frequent triggers must be considered. When chocolate was studied to assess a chocolate trigger-headache link no connection was found with migraine and tension-type headache. Many consider alcohol to be a sure migraine trigger, but its importance is still debated.

In a forward-looking study published in 2007, Austrian researchers examined a large number of factors related to migraine. After an advanced data analysis, they found limited importance of nutrition, including alcoholic beverages in the precipitation of migraine. This work considered alcohol and other nutritional factors taken the day before onset of headache.

Migraine Drug May Treat Alcoholism Too

6 medications that can make migraine worse in 2020 ...

Topamax may hold promise for those with drinking problems, a new study says.

But whether it will be used in clinical practice is another question.

A new study appearing in the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association finds that the drug, commonly known by the brand name Topamax, can reduce alcohol dependence and the number of days alcoholics drink heavily.

However, drugs like topiramate are not widely prescribed, and the company that manufactures Topamax, Ortho-McNeil Neurologics Inc., says it does not plan to market the drug as a treatment for alcoholism.

Still, some hope that the finding may help some who struggle with alcohol dependence.

“I think it offers a new hope for patients,” says lead study author Dr. Bankole Johnson, chairman of the department of psychiatric medicine at the University of Virginia Health System. “It offers a hope that patients can get immediate treatment, and it reinforces the fact that alcoholism is a brain disorder and can be treated with medications.”

Migraine Drug a Big Headache

However, getting a drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is no easy task the cost and time involved are enormous.

An Off-Label Option?

But since the drug has already been approved for treatment of migraines and seizures, physicians can prescribe it as an off-label drug if additional studies confirm the findings.

Still, doctors may look to it as an off-label alcoholism treatment option.

How Does It Work

Topiramate alters ones brain chemistry in a way that reduces alcohol cravings in the short-term. It also reduces alcohol withdrawal symptoms, which helps cut back on chronic consumption.

Topiramate is a glutamate antagonist and a GABA agonist. It works by blocking the activity of two subtypes of glutamate receptors while enhancing the action of GABA, a calming agent. Glutamate is an excitatory brain chemical that alcohol suppresses, thereby slowing brain activity while you drink.

Although its mechanisms of action are not fully understood, topiramate appears to target a potential chemical imbalance caused by chronic drinking.

The glutamate system4 plays a major role in the behavioral and neural actions of alcohol, as well as the actions that drive the development of alcoholism. By blocking glutamate receptors, topiramate alters the effects of ethanol.

The drug also indirectly decreases the dopamine-induced pleasurable feeling that typically results from alcohol consumption. Naltrexone, which is FDA-approved for alcoholism and opioid addiction, also suppresses dopamine levels. Some evidence5 suggests, however, that topiramate may work better6 than naltrexone.

The ingredients in this smoothie are jam-packed with vitamins and minerals. Watermelons are full of water, magnesium, and potassium. These ingredients help reduce brain fog and increase mental focus. Honey contains various minerals that aid in blood vessel relaxation. Honey promotes the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain.

If you believe that you are allergic or sensitive to some of the ingredients of these drinks, then avoid them and choose another one on the list. It may trigger your migraines even more.

Why Do I Get A Migraine Attack When I Drink Alcohol

Unfortunately, we still dont know exactly what it is about alcoholic drinks that triggers migraine, and the root cause might be different for different people. For example, it may be the actual alcohol itself that triggers attacks the chemicals its broken down into by the body may directly trigger migraine, or its diuretic effect may lead to a migraine attack by causing dehydration.

Alcoholic drinks also contain certain compounds besides the alcohol itself that may trigger migraine attacks these are the byproducts of alcohol fermentation. Known as congeners, they are thought by some researchers to trigger headaches as a general rule, darker drinks tend to have more congeners. This could potentially explain why some people with migraine find they cant drink certain darker drinks like beer or red wine, however, more research is needed to find out.

Alcohol also causes our blood vessels to expand and increases blood flow, which could contribute to migraine attacks. However, while changes to the blood vessels are involved in migraine, research suggests that they are not the cause of an attack. We now know that migraine is a brain disease, not a disease of the blood vessels as it was once thought to be.
