Can Sex Help A Migraine

How Do We Know

Can Sex Cure A Headache? – Dr. Alan Mandell, D.C.

For a long time, sex as a headache remedy was purely anecdotal lore. Plenty of folks knew it worked for them, but there wasnt any clinical evidence backing it up.

Then, in 2006, two case studies emerged that brought the subject into the clinical space. Both people assessed had lived with cluster headaches for decades, and both had come to learn that sex was a quick and reliable route to relief.

Following that publication, a 2013 survey collected evidence on a much larger scale. According to responses from 304 people with chronic migraine and 96 people with cluster headaches, a significant number of people found that getting busy did, indeed, ease their pain.

At What Point Should You See A Doctor About Your Symptoms

Sex and orgasm headaches arent usually serious but they can be a symptom of an underlying condition.

See a doctor if this is your first time getting a headache during sex or if you experience a severe headache that begins abruptly or lasts more than 24 hours.

In rare cases, a sex headache could be a sign of serious medical emergency, such as stroke.

  • loss of sensation

Does It Depend On The Type Of Migraine Or Headache

Based on what we know so far, it appears that migraine attacks and cluster headaches can be sexed into submission in some people.

There are also plenty of anecdotal reports of people who say that sex has relieved other types of headaches, too.

Before dropping trou and assuming position next time your head pounds, you should know that for some, sex can worsen or even trigger headaches.

Take A Second Look At Chocolate

Many people blame chocolate for triggering their migraines. But studies haven’t found a clear link. It might just be guilt by association. Maybe you ate a few squares to satisfy a craving for sweets, an early migraine symptom. In fact, eating chocolate during an attack might bring some relief. It’s a mood booster and has magnesium, riboflavin, and tryptophan, all known migraine fighters.

What You Can Do

Relation between sex & migraine
  • Be aware of any pre-appointment restrictions. When you make the appointment, ask if there’s anything you need to do in advance, such as restricting your diet.
  • Write down any symptoms you’re experiencing, including any that may seem unrelated to the reason for which you scheduled the appointment.
  • Write down key personal information, including past illnesses and operations, major stresses or recent life changes, and any medical problems that run in your family.
  • Make a list of all medications, vitamins and supplements you’re taking.
  • Take a family member or friend along, if possible. Someone who accompanies you may remember something that you missed or forgot.
  • Write down questions to ask your doctor.

Preparing a list of questions can help you make the most of your time with your doctor. For headaches associated with sexual activity, some questions to ask your doctor include:

  • What is likely causing my symptoms or condition?
  • Are there other possible causes for my symptoms or condition?
  • What tests do I need?
  • Is my condition likely temporary or chronic?
  • What is the best course of action?
  • What are the alternatives to the primary approach you’re suggesting?
  • I have these other health conditions. How can I best manage them together?
  • Are there any restrictions that I need to comply with?
  • Should I see a specialist?
  • Is there a generic alternative to the medicine you’re prescribing?
  • Are there brochures or other printed material I can take? What websites do you recommend?

You May Have Worse Menstrual Cramps

Surprisingly, sex may help alleviate cramps during your period. Although it hasnt been well studied, Dr. Streicher says the rationale is sound. The uterus is a muscle and many women will actually have a uterine contraction when they orgasm, which will cause the blood to expel more quickly, which will in turn decrease menstrual cramps, she explains. Also, there may be an increase in endorphins, which also will help with menstrual cramps. This is an unexpected benefit you lose if youre not having sexbut fortunately, this one doesnt require a partner to remedy. Since men dont suffer from PMS, here are six reasons why men say no to sex!

Is There Any Research To Support This

You betcha! This actually isnt the first time that sexual arousal and orgasm have been linked to pain relief.

Being turned on especially to the point of climax has been proven to relieve back pain, menstrual cramps, and even labor pain.

Doctors had suspected for years that sex could relieve migraine and cluster headaches, but only had a few case reports to go on.

In 2013, a large observational study of folks with migraine and cluster headaches finally confirmed it.

Based on the results of the study, 60 percent of the migraine-having participants reported that sexual activity gave them considerable or complete improvement of their migraine attacks.

The same study also showed that 37 percent of participants who experience cluster headaches reported that sexual activity improved their attacks.

Many of the participants said they used sex as a reliable therapeutic tool for migraine relief. Now thats my kind of therapy!

Can Sex Trigger Migraines

So, can getting freaky freak out your head? Lets look at that same observational study for some insight.

It found that sex made migraine attacks worse for 33 percent of people. So if youre already in the throes of a migraine, shagging could supercharge your symptoms.

But thats not all. If youre feeling fine and dandy, getting randy could also bring on a migraine episode in a roundabout way.

Its not usually the deed itself that causes a migraine attack .

But, according to research published in 2013, exercise has been known to set migraine attacks into action. And since sex can be a full-contact sport, its not surprising that it could cause migraine attacks for some people.

Theres even a type of headache specifically linked to fooling around.

Remember, migraine is a neurological disorder. So the headache called primary headache associated with sexual activity is a completely different animal, even though it can cause head pain. It occurs during or after sexual excitement or the Big O.

This type of primary headache is typically located in the back of the head on both sides. If you tend to get a head-pounder after a little, ahem, headboard pounding, you should definitely contact a medical professional to figure out whats going on.

Could It Work For Tmj Headaches

Why is migraine trigger management so difficult? and how Migraine Buddy can help you….

Although it originates in the jaw, temporomandibular joint disorders are characterized by numerous vague symptoms that can impact several parts of the body. This includes several types of headaches, including tension-type headaches and migraines. Recent studies tend to link TMJ more with migraines than with TTH. In fact, TMJ and migraines are considered part of the complex of chronic overlapping pain conditions , which also includes fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome/disorder , and several others. Therefore, its likely that sex could relieve headaches for most people who experience them because of TMJ.

However, there is no evidence to support that sex might give relief from TTH or other types of headaches. Therefore, sex cant be recommended as a general headache solution. That said, there is probably little harm in trying this headache solution if you have a ready and willing partner. In fact, you probably dont even need a partner, since researchers in the study believe that masturbatory orgasms could work just as well as orgasmic sex with a partner.

Can Sex Help Cure Headaches

Headaches are a common symptom among American adults. Women are five times more likely to experience migraines than men. Headaches can range from common tension headaches – which are described by dull, aching pain – to debilitating migraines. There are several different headache treatments, like drinking water, taking medication, and exercising. There is, however, an unconventional headache treatment: sex. Studies have shown that having sex can significantly reduce headache pain. Next time you feel a headache coming on, sex may be a treatment option.

Can Sex Cause Headaches

Does sex help headaches of all kinds? Unfortunately, it would seem not.

Far from being a headache remedy for all, the study indicated that in some people, far from helping relieve a headache, sexual activity only made the headache worse.

The study indicated that sex as a headache remedy works better for migraines, as the cluster headache patients reported mixed results with 50% of people experiencing cluster headaches reporting sex made their cluster headaches worse.4

So, if youve got a cluster headache, its advisable to use your bedroom for rest and relaxation only until it passes.

Endorphins Released During Sex Alleviate Pain

What makes sexual intercourse and other sexual activities a welcome relief for these extreme headache sufferers? During arousal and orgasm, endorphins increase. Endorphins are peptides that act on the brains opiate receptors. With increased feelings of pleasure, there is a reduction in perceptions of pain.

Perhaps we pay less attention to the discomforting signals of our headache when distracted by lovemaking. Or more likely, the opioid-acting endorphins rapidly provide pain relief. So, we no longer experience pain or are in the throes of an attack.

A published research study found that a majority of people having migraine attacks felt better after sexual activities. Specifically, 60% of migraine sufferers reported an improvement and 70% reported moderate to complete relief from their migraines.

We have all heard or even used the old excuse: Not tonight, honey. I have a headache. Sex and migraines have been linked together in this commonplace way to avoid intimacy, so much so that its almost impossible to take seriously.

However, recent studies have proven that the neurotransmitters and hormones released during orgasm may actually relieve headaches for some sufferers! When we saw the shocking statistics on sex and migraines, we thought we really have to be talking about this more. While sex might be the last thing on your mind at the onset of a migraine, it could be the simple, healthy, and all-natural home remedy youve been looking for.

Studies on Sex and Migraines

Several studies have examined the effects of sexual activity on headache symptoms. A 2013 study published in Cephalalgia examined the impact of sexual activity on 800 migraine sufferers. Of the patients who responded, 60% of them experienced some relief when engaging in sexual activity during an attack. 70% of those reported moderate to complete relief.

Another study conducted at the University of Illinois showed comparable results. Of 83 women who were surveyed, nearly 48% of respondents had some relief of their migraines symptoms with sexual activity. Of that 48%, 17.5% reported being completely pain-free.

Can Earthing Help with Migraine Headaches?

Whether from the pain itself or the medications taken to prevent it, many people with Migraine find that sex is the last thing on their minds. Over time, that can really start to impact a relationship. The key to overcoming it? Communication.

Dawn Buse explains, “The first thing to do is just to talk about it – bring this out in the open. Talk to each other about how you’re missing intimacy, you’re missing that connection, and you’re missing time together. And talk about what the Migraine experience is like and why this is difficult or impossible to engage in during a Migraine. But then also you might want to think about planning a date night or a romantic time for the next time that you are feeling well….There might be ways when you’re not in the throes of a Migraine attack that you can tell your spouse you appreciate them. A New Study About Coffee And Migraines: How Much Is Too Much

In a new study published in the American Journal of Medicine, researchers asked 98 people with migraines to keep a diet diary that included how often they consumed caffeinated beverages . This information was compared with how often they had migraines. Heres what they found:

  • The odds of having a migraine increased for those drinking three or more caffeinated beverages per day, but not for those consuming one to two servings per day the effect lasted through the day after caffeine consumption.
  • It seemed to take less caffeine to trigger a headache in those who didnt usually have much of it. Just one or two servings increased the risk of migraine in those who usually had less than one serving per day.
  • The link between caffeine consumption and migraine held up even after accounting for other relevant factors such as alcohol consumption, sleep, and physical activity.

Interestingly, the link was observed regardless of whether the study subject believed that caffeine triggered their headaches.

Sex and Migraines: How Intimacy Can Hurt â and Actually ...

By Dr. Brent Wells, DC

Yes! An ever-changing field of study, migraine and headache pain can be helped by chiropractic treatments. Such pain is often intensified by another, possibly hidden, physical condition or anomaly. As science begins to better understand what migraine and headache pain sufferers experience, patients are encouraged to seek strategic and personalized care solutions.

As a neurological disease, migraine pain can be helped by working to provide nerves with the very best home possible within the body. Headache and migraine episodes may have multiple contributing factors, thus increasing frequency and intensity. It is quite possible that the sufferer is not yet even aware that a problem exists with either condition.

Chiropractic treatments work to eliminate underlying ailments, misalignments, and injuries especially those that may not be known by the patient. Doctors of chiropractic must prove their knowledge and readiness to practice, as stated by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners.
