Warning Signs Of More Serious Arm & Shoulder Problems

Dizziness, headaches, and neck pain from SCM trigger points

In some instances, shoulder pain and arm pain can indicate more serious problems. These problems might include cancer, fractures, infection, severe nerve compression and ankylosis spondylitis.;

  • If there is cancer in the bones of the spine, this usually means metastases .

  • Fractures of the spine can be caused by a direct hit, fall, accident but sometimes can occur without trauma, called spontaneous fractures. Spontaneous fractures, usually can occur in elderly people with osteoporosis or those who may be taking steroid medications that weaken the bone.

  • Infections of the spine tend to occur if patients have a weakened immune system from any cause or medical condition. Sometimes infections of the spine can occur if there is an infection elsewhere in the body. People with spinal infections usually feel unwell and can have sweats and a fever.

  • Nerve compression, called myelopathy, where there is a dangerous compression of the spinal cord in the neck. Myelopathy could cause symptoms that might include, weakness or problems with coordination in the arms, hands, legs, or even feet.

Why Do Neck Pain And Headaches Occur Together

There is no one special reason for headaches and neck pain to go together. Few conditions may begin as neck problems and then shoot these problems up to the head, while few problems triggered in the head are sent back to the neck. This is the reason why they both occur together.

Trigeminocervical nucleus, Dura Mater of the brain, brain tissues, and blood vessels in the head and immune system also have their role for the occurrence of these pains together. Besides, the posture of the body can also lead to both the pains at a time.

To explain it further, a combination of 1 or multiple pain mechanisms and pathways is most responsible for the cause of neck pain and headache together.

Symptoms Of A Migraine

Migraines can vary from person to person and even from attack to attack. There are a wide range of;migraine symptoms, but the most common include:

  • ;;;;;;;;Head pain, often over one eye or on one or both sides
  • ;;;;;;;;Sensitivity to light
  • ;;;;;;;;Ear pain
  • ;;;;;;;;Coughing

To further compound the confusion between these two conditions, even treatment options are similar. Many people are very surprised to discover that sinus medications and treatments relieve their migraine pain. Dr. Ailani explains:

Migraine can improve when using products like Sudafed or Advil cold/sinus. These medications work to reduce some of the chemicals that are elevated during a migraine, so dont be fooled into thinking that if you feel better with Sudafed, it is a sinus issue. Overuse of these medications can lead to more headaches, so if you find yourself using these medications more than 2-3 days a week, seek medical attention for an appropriate diagnosis.

A diagnosis of either a migraine or a;sinus headache;is the first step in finding treatment that works.

These symptoms;may be a sign of;a more serious condition, such as a stroke or meningitis, and should be;assessed by a doctor as soon as possible.

What Causes Tension Headaches

Can a Pinched Nerve Cause Headaches and Neck Pain?

At the base of the skull, there is a group of muscles called the suboccipital muscles. They can cause headache pain for many people. These four pairs of muscles are responsible for subtle movements between the skull and first and second vertebrae in the neck.

The suboccipital muscles may become tense and tender due to the following:

  • Eye strain
  • Grinding teeth
  • Trauma

Pain from the suboccipital muscles commonly feels like a band wrapping around the head. Also, tension in these muscles may cause compression of a nerve that exits the base of the skull. This can trigger pain that wraps over the head and above the eyes.

No, it’s the other way around. Migraine causes neck pain; neck pain does not cause migraine. Many people interpret it as neck pain causing migraine attacks because they experience neck pain as a prodromal or premonitory symptom. They then believe that something going on in their neck is what is initiating the migraine attack. But neck pain occurs amongst other symptoms

Case Studies Involving Upper Cervical Care For Migraines Neck Pain And Headaches

Besides this study, there are many case studies involving both migraine and headache patients who have benefited from various forms of upper cervical care. In one compilation of 101 case studies, 37 of the patients were experiencing migraines . All but 8 of those 37 patients could remember a head or neck trauma that preceded the onset of migraines.

What were the results of these 37 case studies? 26 of the patients experienced the elimination of their migraines, including two men and a woman who had daily migraines. The other 11 patients all experienced a reduction in the number of migraines per month. Several daily migraine sufferers were down to just one or two per month. Some patients received benefits in as little as 1 month of care.

The youngest patient was age 9. He had been experiencing 10 migraines per month following an injury. His condition completely resolved in just one month of care. The oldest patient was 67, and she experienced a reduction of her migraine days to just one per month.

The Upper Neck And Migraines

The reason neck pain is so common with migraines may very well be related to the effects of an upper cervical misalignment . When the C1 and C2 vertebrae are misaligned, the function of the entire central nervous system can be thrown off because of the roles we just discussed that are carried out by these bones.

There can be a restriction of blood flow to the brain if the misalignment affects the vertebral arteries and creates any kinks or other slowdowns. Reduced blood flow plays a key role in migraine occurrence. The misaligned bones could potentially put pressure on the brainstem or spinal cord, and this pressure can cause malfunctions in communication between the brain and body. Brainstem function also has some link to migraines. But these are not the only issues that can lead to migraines.

Rutgers Strives To Raise Global Awareness Of Dentists Trained In Orofacial Pain To Diagnose Elusive Pain Syndromes

The U.S. Surgeon General cited facial pain as a major component of trigeminal neuralgia, facial shingles, temporomandibular disorders and fibromyalgia. The report said 22 percent of U.S. adults reported some form of oral or facial pain in the previous six months.

When Maria, then 22, began experiencing pain, she felt it intermittently, mostly in the left upper jaw area. Thinking she had sinusitis, she visited an ear, nose and throat specialist. The ENT found no explanation for the pain. With the pain intensifying and lasting hours and sometimes days at a time, she also consulted her dentist, who suspected that faulty restorations were to blame.

When we took her medical history, we learned that her mother and grandmother suffered from migraine headaches, Rafael Benoliel, a professor at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine; where he is director of the Center for;Orofacial Pain and Temporomandibular Disorders. Migraines are genetic in nature but I still wasnt certain until we looked at the whole picture and considered everything we had observed.

Her case is used at the dental school to explain atypical mid-face migraines but also to illustrate the value of interdisciplinary care, particularly when the evidence for a diagnosis and treatment plan is not clear.

A misdiagnosis not only may lead to inappropriate treatment and expense, it can delay reaching an accurate, timely diagnosis of conditions with potentially severe consequences, Heir said.

  • Dull or deep aching pain in a muscle that is related to the use of that particular muscle
  • The duration of pain depends on the severity experienced by the individual patient. Other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, weakness, and numbness are rarely found and, as such, if any of these are present a more serious disorder involving headaches should be suspected

How Can You Relieve Tension Headache Pain

Here are some tips to help you manage the cause of your tension headaches:

  • Get an eye exam. If youre straining to read, or keep tilting your head up and down to use those off-the-shelf glasses, you may need a new pair of glasses.
  • Redesign your workstation. Simply raising your computer monitor or getting a document stand can help reduce repeated head tilting that can strain the occipital muscles.
  • Avoid slouching and practice good posture. Consider trying yoga, Pilates or Tai Chi. All of these disciplines are great forms of exercise and all can help to improve posture. Also, you may want to consult a physical therapist, chiropractor, or movement therapist for exercises that are tailored to your need.
  • Get a 30-minute massage that concentrates on the neck and upper back. This can help relax your muscles and relieve your headache pain.
  • Try applying a hot pack to the base of the head. Do this for 15-20 minute intervals.
  • Stuff two tennis balls into a sock and tie it off tightly. Lie on your back on the floor. Place the tennis balls under the base of your skull and allow your head to compress against them. Gently rock your head back and forth and side to side for a few minutes.

Why Do People Experience Neck Pain With Migraine Attacks

Its not completely understood why migraine neck pain is so common, but there are some good hypotheses. The nerves from the neck converge with the nerves from the head in the brainstem, which is the area at the base of the brain that is believed to be one of the first relay stations for migraine pain. One hypothesis is that the brainstem gets switched on, and when a sensitized nervous system receives input from the head and the neck, it is amplified in ways that generate pain.

The other possibility is that the nerves of the neck have some function in terms of supplying sensory input to the back part of the head within the skull. Theres strong evidence that the nerves of the neck actually provide sensory input from the lining of the brain, which is called the meninges. Because those nerves are receiving sensory input from the back part of the brain, when they become sensitized they can cause neck pain

Neck Pain And Headaches From Stress

Can Neck Pain Cause Bad Headaches?

Stress is nothing more than our reaction to a provocation that upsets our physical and/or mental equilibrium. Therefore, stress is an inevitable part of life. Nevertheless, when we are faced with stress, our fight or flight response can be triggered; this causes the production of hormones including adrenaline and cortisol to increase and rush through your body.

Treating The Neck Pain / Headaches

Treatment of the neck can help with headaches and decrease the frequency and severity of symptoms of headache. This includes common treatment procedures such as massage, strengthening of associated muscles and stretching of involved muscles .;

The combination of manual therapy and exercise has proven an effective treatment for neck pain compared to many other alternative treatment types . The combination of these treatments is important, as mobilisation and manipulation only provides short-term relief. Exercise appears to have the added benefit of improving pain and function over long term . Therefore, the combination of both treatments can combine pain reduction with long-term changes . The exact type of manual therapy and manipulative treatments is still speculative and varies according to individual practitioners. Similarly, exercise therapy requires further research and the exact type of strengthening is difficult to determine.;

Learning new behaviours associated with common tasks, such as sitting down and looking down to read a book or read your phone for long periods of time can also assist with treating your neck pain. As prolonged postures in a specific posture can increase neck pain frequency, and subsequently induce more headaches .;
