Can Migraines Make You Sleepy

Although you can solve many sleep problems by changing your habits, a sleep disorder like snoring, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, or chronic insomnia may require the attention of a medical professional or sleep specialist.

People living with migraine are between two and eight times more likely to experience sleep disorders compared with the general public, according to the American Migraine Foundation. Those with chronic migraine 15 or more headache days a month report twice the rates of insomnia as those with less frequent headaches.

Poor sleep is a common trigger for migraine headaches, Rosen says. There is good evidence that sleep disrupters, like snoring and sleep apnea, are linked to chronic migraines.

Oversleeping Can Also Increase Your Migraine Risk

Oversleeping can trigger migraine attacks because it disrupts the sleep-wake cycle. And this may lead to migraine headaches for various reasons. One way it may do so is through changes in the level of neurotransmitters in the brain. During REM sleep, neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin are released. If oversleeping interrupts the normal functioning of these neurotransmitters, then it could result in headaches. Elizabeth McDevitt of the Sleep and Cognition Lab at UC Riverside states:

The mechanism behind this isnt understood that well, and one hypothesis is that fluctuations in neurotransmitters during sleep may be a trigger for headaches. Another possibility is that when people sleep later in the morning, they may be sleeping past their normal breakfast or coffee time, and the headaches may be related to caffeine withdrawals, low blood sugar, or dehydration.

This is how migraines can sometimes start during sleep. If you oversleep and experience withdrawals from caffeine, low blood sugar, or dehydration, your migraine symptoms could begin during the end of your sleep. This is why you might wake up with a pounding headache, as well as other migraine symptoms, such as nausea and hypersensitivity to light and sound.

After The Migraine Stops It’s Time For The Postdrome Phase

A Migraine attack actually has four potential stages. Not every person will experience each of the phases, nor will every Migraine attack.

  • Prodrome phase : This initial phase can last from 1-24 hours. Symptoms include yawning, fatigue, mood changes, neck stiffness, excessive thirst, and food cravings.
  • Aura phase: This phase of a Migraine may or may not be present in all attacks. It can last anywhere from 5-60 minutes. Symptoms of Migraine aura include changes in vision like flashes of light or zig zags, and sensory changes like facial numbness, tingling, vertigo, and speech difficulties.

Common symptoms include brain fog, fatigue, moodiness, and a general sense of “feeling like a zombie.” The hangover phase can last hours or days, but it typically lasts around 24 hours.

    I Woke Up With A Migraine What Can I Do

    Although there is no cure for migraines, there are steps you can take to alleviate your symptoms. Over-the-counter pain relievers, a glass of water, or a cool, damp cloth on your forehead may bring relief. You can also make sure your surroundings are quiet, dark, and peaceful. If your migraines are persistent or severe, you may want to talk to your physician. A health care provider can work with you to understand your symptoms, discuss your medical history, and perform physical or neurological exams to rule out other conditions that may be influencing your migraines. They might also prescribe other medications to help with your migraines.

    Study Population And Survey Process

    The study was a nationwide, cross-sectional survey of headache and sleep in the Korean population in adults aged 1969 years. The study design and methods have been previously described in detail . Briefly, we adopted a two-stage systematic random sampling method in all Korean territories except Jeju-do, proportional to the distribution of the population, which resulted in a sample of 2,695 individuals. Subjects were stratified according to age, gender, size of residential area and educational level. To minimize bias, we informed participants that the topic of the survey was social health issues rather than headache. Trained interviewers conducted structured interviews using a questionnaire to diagnose headache type, sleep duration, sleepiness, anxiety, and depression door-to-door using a face-to-face interview. The interview included questions on headache symptoms and sleep status. All interviewers were employed by Gallup Korea and had previous social survey interviewing experience. The study was conducted from November 2011 to January 2012. It was approved by the institutional review board/ethics committee of Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital and was performed in accordance with the ethical standards described in the 1964 Declaration of Helsinki and its subsequent amendments .     10 Ways to Prevent Migraines

    The four stages in chronological order are the prodrome , aura, headache and postdrome. About 30% of people experience symptoms before their headache starts.

    The phases are:

  • Prodrome: The first stage lasts a few hours, or it can last days. You may or may not experience it as it may not happen every time. Some know it as the preheadache or premonitory phase.
  • Aura: The aura phase can last as long as 60 minutes or as little as five. Most people dont experience an aura, and some have both the aura and the headache at the same time.
  • Headache: About four hours to 72 hours is how long the headache lasts.     Six Warning Signs Of A Migraine Headache

    Migraine headaches have multiple phases and understanding each phase in more detail can help migraine sufferers manage this condition. It is common for people who suffer from frequent migraines to experience warning signs before the migraines begin. These warning signs are also known as the premonitory phase or prodrome phase, which marks the beginning of a migraine attack. A research study completed by the American Headache Society determined that about 32% of people with migraines experience a prodrome. This phase begins 60 minutes to six hours before a migraine attack, and can last several hours or may even occur over several days and can present numerous symptoms. These symptoms can include irritability, concentration problems, food cravings, sensitivity to bright lights and nausea, among many other warning signs listed by the American Migraine Foundation.     How Does Sleep Deprivation Trigger Migraines

    Additional research is needed to fully understand the relationship between sleep deprivation and migraines, however, they do share common brain mechanisms. For example, the hypothalamus the part of the brain that regulates sleep and arousal also contains neurons involved in modulating pain. The hypothalamus also contains the suprachiasmatic nucleus , which receives signals from our eyes and helps us match our sleeping behaviors to the external cycle of light and darkness outside. A damaged SCN may cause erratic daytime sleep and disrupt the sleep-wake cycle.

    Another key part of the brain involved in sleep is the pineal gland, which produces melatonin, the hormone that helps us fall asleep when we recognize the change between day and night. Low levels of melatonin have been linked to migraines and cluster headaches, as well as waking up with headaches.

    Which Medications Are Used For Preventing Migraines

    Preventative therapy should be considered for patients who suffer from recurrent migraines that cause significant disability, frequent migraines that require treatment more than twice a week, or migraines that do not respond or respond poorly to symptomatic treatments. Currently there are no drugs that specifically target and prevent migraines. Certain blood pressure medications as well as some antidepressants, anti-seizure drugs, and herbals have been shown to have beneficial effects in preventing migraine headaches.     Does Birth Control Make You Tired

    Blaming your mid-day sleepiness entirely on your hormonal contraceptive isn’t so simple. Fatigue has been reported to be a side effect of birth control, but it’s not exactly typical, says Amy Roskin, J.D., M.D., the chief medical officer of The Pill Club. Indeed, the U.S. National Library of Medicine lists extreme tiredness and lack of energy as potential, yet uncommon, side effects of combined oral contraceptives .

    In theory, however, hormonal contraceptives should actually reduce the odds of you feeling tired, says Sophia Yen, M.D., M.P.H., the co-founder and CEO of Pandia Health, a birth control delivery company. These birth control methods generally lessen the amount of blood you lose during your period, which, in turn, may decrease your risk of anemia a condition in which you don’t have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to your tissues, she explains. If you have a heavy period, for example, you may lose red blood cells more quickly than they can be replaced, which can lead to anemia and symptoms such as fatigue and weakness, according to the Mayo Clinic. “If you have heavy periods, then you’re at risk for being tired, but hormonal birth control should make all of that better,” says Dr. Yen.

    Coping With A Migraine Hangover

    Currently, there are no treatments available specifically for the postdrome phase of a Migraine. To add insult to injury, you are more susceptible to having another Migraine attack during the hangover, too.

    This is why it is so important to manage Migraine triggers during this phase.

    • Drinking plenty of water

    While it may be tempting to get an extra-large cup of coffee to battle brain fog or take a 3-hour nap to fight an overwhelming sense of fatigue during a Migraine hangover, try to avoid doing so.

    Excess sleep and caffeine may, in fact, make these symptoms worse, which is not what you want.

    If these symptoms do not go away on their own after a day or two, you should seek care with your primary care provider or headache specialist. Your doctor will want to make sure there isn’t anything else going on, especially if you have symptoms like weakness, cognition trouble, fatigue, moodiness, and dizziness.

    Other possible causes of these symptoms are anemia, thyroid problems, mood disorders, or medication side effects. Of course, true or actual weakness, which includes motor loss or limb weakness so that there is strength loss or inability of the limb to function properly, warrants urgent neurological exam and referral.

    Can Sumatriptan Cause Problems

    Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them.     There is no absolute cure for migraine. However, lots of treatments are available to help ease the symptoms of a migraine attack.

    When a migraine attack occurs, most people find that lying down in a quiet, dark room is helpful. Sleeping can also help. Some people find that their symptoms die down after they have vomited .

    Most people affected by migraine will already have tried paracetamol, aspirin and perhaps anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen before they seek advice from their doctor. If ordinary painkillers alone are not relieving your symptoms, your GP might prescribe you a triptan to be taken in addition to over-the-counter painkillers . Triptans are available in different forms to suit individuals , although it is important to note that some people develop short-term side effects when taking triptans. Your doctor may also prescribe you anti-sickness medication. If your situation does not improve after treatment, you might be referred to a specialist migraine clinic.

    It is important to avoid taking painkillers on more than two days per week or more than 10 days per month as this can in fact make things worse by triggering medication overuse headaches.
