Weakness On One Side Of The Body

Vertigo: Caused by Migraines or Inner Ear Conditions?

When an arm goes limp, it can be a sign of a migraine.

Some people experience muscle weakness on one side of the body before a migraine attack. This can also be a sign of a stroke, however, so consult a doctor to rule out any other causes.

Light Noise Or Smells Trigger Or Worsen Pain

In the throes of a migraine attack, the migraine sufferer tends to seek refuge in a dark, quiet place. Bright lights and loud noises can trigger a migraine or intensify the pain. The same is true of certain odors.

“Once you’ve already got a migraine, smells can seem more intense and make it worse,” Dr. Calhoun says. “But a smell can also trigger a migraine in someone who didn’t have one before walked past the perfume counter.”

What Are The Signs Of Sinus Problems

Occasionally, one or more symptoms may occur by themselves. However, most often symptoms of a specific type are generally accompanied by others.

Dizziness is just one symptom that can be caused by sinus problems. Other symptoms include headaches, a stuffy nose, nasal congestion, and post-nasal drip.

If your sinuses are not properly draining and causing a build-up of pressure behind them, then this can result in dizziness or headaches as well.

One thing worth remembering about these types of congestion problems is they generally get better on their own after just 24 hours without any treatment at all if its caused by bacterial infection.

Most people who have viral infections wont experience anything more than post-nasal drip and congested nose so dont panic too much if your symptoms go away with time for no apparent reason!

They all have the same cause which is inflammation in your airways so if youre experiencing any other symptoms then its worth investigating what could be causing them.

Depending on the underlying cause, you may find that there are some things to try before turning to medication. For example, if your symptoms are caused by allergies then its worth considering antihistamines and nasal decongestants as well as taking care not to trigger a reaction with any airborne triggers like pollen or dust mites.

People With Allergies Will Experience Dizziness For A Number Of Reasons

Dizziness is a general feeling of vertigo or instability. It can be accompanied by nausea and headaches.

There are many potential causes for dizziness including allergies or a cold , blood pressure changes, increased intracranial pressure from an illness like meningitis or brain tumor, dehydration, and orthostatic hypotension to name but a few!

In addition, some people who are sensitive to certain chemicals that exist in everyday products like scouring powder, detergents, and paint thinners have been known to suffer from chronic sensitivity reactions such as sinusitis due to their exposure.

This is because when these substances enter the body through inhalation or ingestion it triggers an immune response which inflames cells lining the airways causing inflammation leading to mucous production and allergic symptoms including sneezing, coughing, and nasal blockage also sometimes called allergic rhinitis.

Dizziness will come up due to that inflammation which is causing a pressure increase in the sinuses.

The best thing for this type of problem and all other related problems such as chronic allergies maybe with long-term treatment strategies involving lifestyle changes like avoiding triggers or symptoms relieving medications when necessary.

In some cases, surgery will also help remove any obstructions in throat passages for example but only under strict guidance from medical professionals due to potential side effects and complications arising during the procedure itself.

How Does Dizziness Factor In

HOW DOES MIGRAINE MAKE YOU DIZZY?

Dizziness by itself is a common ailment. About;15 percent of the general population experiences dizziness each year, and the rate is higher among older adults.

Its one of the top five presenting symptoms to a primary doctor, Dr. Cherian says.

It causes falls and faintness in some cases, but with vestibular migraines youll have vertigo or a sense of spinning.

Dizziness is generally not serious, and may relate to medications or heart problems as well as inner ear problems , he says.

Migraine And Vestibular Dysfunction

Approximately 40% of migraine patients have some accompanying vestibular syndrome involving disruption in their balance and/or dizziness at one time or another. This may be prior to, during, after, or totally independent of their migraine event. Some interesting parallels exist between migraine and non-migrainous vestibular dysfunction. Many of the food and environmental triggers for migraineurs are the same as those for patients with non-migrainous vestibular dysfunction. Hormonal fluctuations, foods, and weather changes often exacerbate both conditions. Finally, diet modifications and certain medications used in migraine management may ameliorate or prevent the vestibular component of the migraine.2,3 ;Interestingly enough, some of the analgesic medications for the pain do not resolve the dizziness and medications for the dizziness often do not resolve the painful headache.

The clinical presentation of vestibular symptoms that often correlate with migraine includesbut is not limited todizziness; motion intolerance with respect to head, eyes, and/or body; spontaneous vertigo attacks ; diminished eye focus with photosensitivity; sound sensitivity and tinnitus; balance loss and ataxia; cervicalgia with associated muscle spasms in the upper cervical spine musculature; confusion with altered cognition; spatial disorientation; and anxiety/panic.4

What Happens During A Migraine

Every migraine begins differently. Sometimes people get a warning that a migraine is on its way. A few hours or even days before the actual headache, people might feel funny or “not right. They might crave different foods, or feel thirsty, irritable, tired, or even full of energy. This is called a “premonition.”

Some people get auras. These are neurological symptoms that start just before the headache and last up to an hour. An aura is different in every person, but it often affects vision. For example, a person might:

  • have blurred vision
  • see spots, colored balls, jagged lines, or bright flashing lights
  • smell a certain odor
  • feel tingling in a part of their face

Once the headache starts, light, smell, or sound may bother people with migraines or make them feel worse. Sometimes, if they try to continue with their usual routine, they may become nauseated and vomit. Often the pain begins only on one side of the head, but it might eventually affect both sides. Trying to do physical activities can make the pain worse.

Most migraines last from 30 minutes to several hours; some can last a couple of days.

Bacterial And Viral Infections

If you have a headache accompanied by dizziness, you may just have a bug thats going around. These are both common symptoms when your bodys exhausted and trying to fight off an infection. In addition, severe congestion and taking over-the-counter cold medicines can also cause a headache and dizziness in some people.

Examples of bacterial and viral infections that can cause a headache and dizziness include:

Labyrinthitis usually goes away on its own within a week or two.

How Is Fatigue Treated

ENT Manifestations of Migraine 1: dizziness, tinnitus, sinus pressure but no headache

If you are experiencing fatigue with migraine, talk with your doctor. Your doctor will ask you questions about your migraine symptoms, how often they occur, how severe they are, and how long they last. It may help to keep a migraine journal to record information on your symptoms, including migraine fatigue. The triggers for your migraine attacks may be the same for fatigue or prodrome, and reducing your exposure to these triggers may help reduce fatigue.

For some people, stress reduction techniques, regular exercise, and having a sleep/wake routine can help reduce fatigue.4 Each person is different, and talking with your doctor about your symptoms can help them work with you to find the appropriate treatment for you.

As For The Dizziness Specifically According To Medical News Today This Symptom Could Be A Sign Of A Vestibular Migraine

Like most migraines, the causes of vestibular migraines are somewhat unclear, though Medical News Today notes that your nerves, blood vessels, certain chemicalsin the brain, and even your inner ear all play a role and are temporarily affected when the pain strikes, hence the dizziness. The pain itself, the outlet says, can be triggered by a whole host of things, including stress, lack of sleep, or even a particular snack you ate. But again, these triggers are often extremely unique to the individual, which is why it’s so important to get your symptoms checked out by a doctor ASAP.

Interestingly enough, according to Dr. Vanessa Rothholtz, a board-certified otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon, when it comes to vestibular migraines, the dizziness or vertigo they can cause sometimes doesn’t actually accompany the headache itself. In other words, your head could feel totally fine, but your sense of balance might be a whole other story. “It can worsen with eye strain ,” Rottholtz tells Elite Daily. “The dizziness is oftentimes described a a sense of being on a boat, but can also be a true spinning type of vertigo.” Freaky, right?

What Is A Vestibular Migraine

Doctors look for at least a five- to eight-year history of migraine symptoms and developing dizziness to identify vestibular migraines . The term vestibular refers to the inner ear and your sense of balance.

The vestibular symptoms are quite variable, Dr. Cherian says. They could include a spinning feeling, a sensation of movement and the perception that things are moving out of proportion to the environment.

Symptoms can last for minutes or days. And, they can knock you off your feet.

Vestibular migraines can be quite debilitating, he says. Even though there is not always a headache, the dizziness, light and sound sensitivity, and/or the nausea are sometimes quite incapacitating.

Its difficult to say how common vestibular migraines are. One study suggests that 1.7 percent of the general population may have them.

The research on this is still evolving, Dr. Cherian says.;In my 18 years of practice, I have not seen many cases.

Nausea And Related Symptoms

Between 30%-80% of those with persistent migraine vertigo get the nasty side effects that come with those sensations, notably:1,6

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Motion sickness

Is is unclear if these are the result of experiencing vestibular disorientation or if they are a complication of migraine, but it does not make them any less unpleasant. Curiously, motion sickness has separately been identified as one of the two biggest precursors to the onset or diagnosis of vestibular migrainethe other being the prior existence of migraine attacks and/or a family history of headache disorders.2,5

Theories Regarding How Migraine Causes Dizziness

5 Indicators that Your Vertigo Is Actually Linked to Migraines

It is common for speakers regarding migraine associated vertigo to say that nobody really knows how migraine causes dizziness. It is more accurate to say — “its complicated”. Part of the problem may be that migraine is a “committee diagnosis“, and may include within it many diseases with different mechanisms. Following are some potential mechanisms for how migraine might be associated with dizziness.

  • Sensory exaggerations — in migraine, all senses can be more acute . This may make patients with migraine more likely to experience motion sickness and amplify the effects of small amounts of vestibular disturbance that other people might not notice.
  • Ear disorders that occur more commonly with Migraine
  • Meniere’s disease .
  • BPPV
  • Vascular including strokes– patients with migraine sometimes experience spasm of blood vessels, including occasional strokes. Blood vessel spasm in the ear or brainstem may cause vertigo.
  • Neurotransmitter changes — patients with migraine have irregularities in neurotransmitters, especially serotonin.
  • Cerebellar disturbance — migraine alters metabolism in the cerebellum.
  • Low blood pressure

    What Helps With Treating Dizziness

Whether or not its due to COVID-19, follow the steps below to help to ease the symptoms of dizziness or vertigo:

    • Sit or lie down. Stop what youre doing and lie down. You can also sit on a chair with your head positioned between your knees. While this last method is beneficial for dizziness, it may make vertigo worse, so be sure to take it slow.
    • Move carefully. Dizziness or vertigo can lead to falls. If you must move around, do so slowly and carefully. Use support in the form of a walking stick or cane, if possible.
    • Hydrate.Dehydration can make your symptoms worse, so try to drink some water as you recover.
    • Avoid some activities. Dont drive or operate other types of heavy machinery until your symptoms have passed.
    • Rest up. Getting a good amount of rest may help ease your symptoms, particularly if theyre due to an infection.

    When To Call A Professional

If you have a history of migraine, you should contact your doctor if you develop headaches that differ from your usual headache or other migraine symptoms. Examples include:

    • Headaches that get worse over time
    • New onset of migraine in a person over age 40
    • Severe headaches that start suddenly
    • Headaches that worsen with exercise, sexual intercourse, coughing or sneezing
    • Headaches with unusual symptoms such as passing out, loss of vision, or difficulty walking or speaking

    Vestibular Migraine And Double Vision

DIZZY? NATURAL REMEDIES for HEADACHE and DIZZINESS

Recently, the number of patients diagnosed with vestibular migraine has increased. Vestibular migraines dont always cause headaches. Symptoms range from dizziness and a lightheaded feeling to body swaying and rocking. Typically, these people have normal vestibular testing and are given a diagnosis of vestibular migraine when no other cause for their symptoms is found.

Double vision is often mistakenly attributed to a migraine. But double vision is caused by weakness in one or more of the eye muscles which control eye movement, not by a migraine. When the eye muscles tire, images from each eye are not precisely focused, and double vision is the result. Frequently, the double vision a person experiences is intermittent. The symptoms from intermittent double vision can mimic vestibular migraine. A person can feel dizzy, lightheaded, and experience body swaying and rocking when looking in different directions.

An easy way to determine if your symptoms are caused by intermittent slight double vision is the 5 Minute Cover Test. Rate your symptoms on a scale of zero to ten. Set a timer for 5 minutes and cover one eye while relaxing and looking out into space with your other eye. When 5 minutes has elapsed, rate your symptoms again BEFORE you uncover the eye. If you feel better, then your problem is with your eye muscles, and you may not have vestibular migraine.

Why Does Fatigue Occur With Migraine

When the fatigue occurs after a migraine attack, it is called postdrome.4Postdrome is the group of symptoms that can happen after the actual pain of the migraine attack has gone, but it is still part of the migraine. It can include fatigue, nausea, dizziness, body aches, and trouble concentrating.4

It is not known why postdrome and its symptoms happen.4 The physiological changes that occur during the pain of the migraine itself can persist, which may cause the postdrome.

    What Is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consider it chronic fatigue syndrome when the tiredness is:

    • Not due to activity
    • A relatively new symptom and not a lifelong condition
    • Causes a significant reduction in previous levels of activities2

For a diagnosis of CFS, three main symptoms must be present, including:2

    • Significantly lower ability to do activities that were easily done before the illness for 6 months or longer
    • Worsening of CFS symptoms after physical or mental activity that would have typically not caused symptoms before the illness
    • Sleep disturbances

At least 1 of 2 other symptoms must be present as well: either memory/cognitive problems or a worsening of symptoms when standing up.2

Many health conditions may cause fatigue. It is estimated that 67 percent of people living with migraine also meet the criteria for CFS.3 The overlap of symptoms is something to keep in mind. When it strikes as a symptom of a migraine attack, it can make it very difficult to perform normal activities. Often, fatigue does not go away with the pain. The person living with migraine may experience fatigue for days following a migraine episode.

What Natural Items Help Clear Your Sinuses

There are a few things that can help clear sinuses. These include:

    • Fresh fruit
    • Lean protein sources such as fish and poultry
    • Whole grains like brown rice or quinoa
    • Neti pot
    • Soup broth with chicken stock for flavor
    • Salty snacks to bring up fluids in the body
    • Proper breathing is one of the most important things you can do if you want to get rid of a congested nose
    • Tea made from peppermint leaves or even ginger works good
    • Power nap
    • Garlic
    • Inhale steam from boiling or simmering soap

Some of these are recommended because pasteurization may kill important immune-supporting properties of this food product as well as those beneficial enzymes which act as a natural anti-inflammatory in the body.

Inhale steam from boiling or simmering soap. This is done by using a pot of water on the stove, and then placing your head over it with a towel draped to cover you up. You can also purchase an electric steamer, which will be more convenient for those who suffer from frequent sinus headaches because they wont need to worry about balancing hot pots of boiling water around their home in search of relief.
