Can Migraines Cause Stomach Problems

Occipital Headache Vs Occipital Neuralgia

Abdominal Migraine, Causes, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Current research is still unable to distinguish the cause of occipital headaches.

  • Can be a feature of migraine headaches and TTH.
  • Thought to be initiated by tension in the shoulder, neck and scalp region that insert in the occipital region.
  • May be due to compression, inflammation or irritation of the C2 sensory nerve roots

Morning headache has been associated with sleep apnoea. However, it is important to remember that morning headaches can have two other causes:

  • Possibility of a tumour
  • Hypertension if blood pressure is over 160/100
  • Sleep apnoea headaches are classified based on the following criteria:

    • Morning headache
    • Usually bilateral
    • Duration of less than 4 hours
    • Caused by sleep apnoea but no time restriction is given for improvement of headache following treatment of sleep apnoea

It is not yet clear if the headaches are due to hypoxia , hypercapnia or sleep apnoea severity.

What Are The Signs Of Sinus Problems

Occasionally, one or more symptoms may occur by themselves. However, most often symptoms of a specific type are generally accompanied by others.

Dizziness is just one symptom that can be caused by sinus problems. Other symptoms include headaches, a stuffy nose, nasal congestion, and post-nasal drip.

If your sinuses are not properly draining and causing a build-up of pressure behind them, then this can result in dizziness or headaches as well.

One thing worth remembering about these types of congestion problems is they generally get better on their own after just 24 hours without any treatment at all if its caused by bacterial infection.

Most people who have viral infections wont experience anything more than post-nasal drip and congested nose so dont panic too much if your symptoms go away with time for no apparent reason!

They all have the same cause which is inflammation in your airways so if youre experiencing any other symptoms then its worth investigating what could be causing them.

Depending on the underlying cause, you may find that there are some things to try before turning to medication. For example, if your symptoms are caused by allergies then its worth considering antihistamines and nasal decongestants as well as taking care not to trigger a reaction with any airborne triggers like pollen or dust mites.

Who Is At Risk For Abdominal Migraine

Abdominal migraines mostly affect children, with the first episode occurring between 3 and 10 years old. Most children seem to outgrow the condition, though abdominal migraines in adulthood are just starting to be studied. A child with a family or personal history of migraine headache has an increased chance of developing abdominal migraine.

Can Acid Reflux Cause Nerve Pain

Can migraines cause stomach problems ?

Acid reflux symptoms can be typical or atypical in nature. Tingling limbs and nerve pain are considered rare and atypical acid reflux symptoms.

Dr. Mark Babyatsky, a former department chairman at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, explained that inflammation from acid reflux can reach the lungs and trigger pneumonia.

As a result, the diaphragm can become inflamed, affecting the phrenic nerve, which is a nerve connecting the neck, lung, heart, and diaphragm. In this scenario, a patient can feel referred pain in the limbs, specifically the arms and shoulders.

Alternatively, nerve-related issues may be caused by pre-existing neuropathic conditions, leading to acid reflux. An example of this is gastroparesis. Gastroparesis is a form of diabetic peripheral neuropathy characterized by slow digestion. This leads to bloating, heartburn, and vomiting of undigested food.

If youre experiencing acid reflux symptoms with nerve pain, theres a high chance that your nerve pain is not reflux-related, especially if you are experiencing temporary reflux. Get in touch with a medical professional to find a separate diagnosis concerning your nerve pain.

    What Is The Cervical Spine

The cervical spine is the neck region of your spinal column. Its made up of seven small, highly mobile bones, and their associated ligaments, muscles, and shock-absorbing discs.

Anything that aggravates or comes into contact with your spinal nerve roots can lead to radiculopathy, and that includes several common conditions in which growths or abnormalities cause something to invade the space of the nerve root.

    • Herniated disc: The shock-absorbing discs between vertebrae can become damaged and may develop a bulge and/or leak fluid.
    • Synovial cyst: These lumps are caused by a buildup of joint fluid that forms a sac.
    • Bone spur: An extra bit of bone forms in response to damage or chronic inflammation.
    • Cervical spondylosis : This condition involves the formation of bone spurs in the neck.
    • Spinal stenosis: An advanced stage of spinal arthritis, stenosis occurs when the spaces in the spine become narrowed, usually due to excess bone growth.
    • Degenerative disc disease: Discs between vertebrae erode and fray over time, which may cause a herniated disc. In cases of severe degeneration, bone-on-bone contact can cause bone spurs in the joint.

    What Causes Abdominal Migraine

The cause of abdominal migraine is unknown. We dont know the exact connection between an abdominal migraine and a classic migraine, but we do know theres a connection between the gut and the brain, says Deena Kuruvilla, MD, a neurologist and specialist in facial and headache pain at Yale Medicine. Many of the drugs we use to treat depression, for example, are effective in treating an abdominal migraine.

Talking To Your Childs Doctor About Abdominal Migraine

    What is Abdominal Migraines

If your child is experiencing symptoms that you feel may be abdominal headaches, the more you can tell their doctor, the better. Show them the migraine diary that you have been keeping for your child and tell them about any symptoms that really concern you.

Abdominal migraine is an unusual condition and many doctors are not well acquainted with the symptoms, diagnostic criteria, or treatment. Amigraine specialist may be a better option for diagnosing and treating your child. These doctors specialize in migraines and may be better equipped to provide a diagnosis. They can then work with you to create a treatment plan for your child that will help prevent attacks and relieve symptoms in the event an attack occurs.

However, talking to a specialist or your childs pediatrician can be a daunting task. Having an open, honest conversation and sharing as much information as possible give the doctor insight into certain lifestyle triggers and any familial traits that can be causing the attacks. Often, though, the diagnosis starts at home. It begins with parents observing their childs behavior and noting their illness. From there it leads to the doctors office and testing. Still, the parents are the key. Dr. Caminez offers some signs parents can look for.

    Migraine Evolution And Progression

Cyclical vomiting, abdominal migraine, and paroxysmal vertigo represent precursors of adulthood migraine according to IHS criteria, and their presentation supports the notion that migraine is present early in life, albeit with different manifestations than in adults. These manifestations represent non-specific and low-grade paroxysmal events, perhaps as a reflection of an immature brain . There is reportedly evidence that the above-noted precursors of adult migraine are neurobiologically related to migraine , and therefore the diagnosis of migraine should be considered in young children with these manifestations. Interestingly, the diagnosis in adolescents may not be as recognizable as in adults . In a 3-year follow-up, a large proportion convert to probable migraine without aura in the revised IHS criteria .

Migraine attacks tend to disappear following severe traumatic brain injury and to recur after cognitive functioning significantly improves . Therefore, the more severe the brain damage, the later the recovery of a fully developed migraine attack. Neurodegenerative diseases presenting with focal brain damage in dopaminergic areas, such as substantia nigra, may shorten the lifetime clinical course of migraine .

Headaches Can Be A Symptom Of Something Else

Ever wonder what is causing your headaches, or why some people get headaches and others do not? A headache is really a symptom of something else, and its not always muscle tension. It is obviously a pain in the head, but the common factor is headaches of all types usually involve inflammation.

Then what causes inflammation? If the immune system reacts to one or more of the foods you eat, then an inflammatory reaction is taking place that can lead to headaches, both common headaches and migraine headaches. Such reactions are far more common than many people realize, and have been established in medical journals such as The Lancet: Is Migraine a Food Allergy?.

Many people with chronic headaches suffer from them for years with no permanent relief. Whether or not you have migraine headaches, tension headaches, sinus headaches, or an undetermined form of headache, it is very possible you are suffering from food allergy-induced inflammation.

The inflammation, and thus the headache, will resolve once the triggering food or foods are removed from the diet. Sometimes this is easier said than done because the foods we eat are often complicated combinations of numerous base foods. But once you understand the problem, the results can be dramatic.

Kids Experience Unique Stomach Issues With Migraine

What Causes Stomach Pain And Headache At The Same Time ...

Paula: Can you explain cyclical vomiting and abdominal migraines?

Dr. Starling: Cyclic vomiting syndrome and abdominal migraine are variants of Migraine, and they’re actually more common in our pediatric population. With abdominal migraine, individuals will have episodes of abdominal pain that is usually poorly localized somewhere in the stomach area.

These episodes will come and go, similar to migraine attacks that will come and go. There are patients for whom abdominal Migraine develops into a more chronic problem similar to Chronic Migraine.

Cyclic vomiting syndrome is another Migraine variant where they’ll have episodes where they’re unable to stop vomiting, and then episodes where they’re doing okay in between – similar to having episodic Migraine. Both of these things, as I mentioned, are more common in the pediatric population, but they can be treated effectively with the same types of medications that we use for Migraine, whether they have a headache or not.

That is another important concept: Migraine should not be synonymous to head pain. Migraine is a sensory processing disorder, and so some people have Migraine without any head pain at all, and they may only have nausea, the abdominal pain, all of these other symptoms that talk about.

How Do Doctors Determine If My Childs Headaches Indicate A Serious Health Problem

First, your doctor reviews the childs headache history. Your doctor will ask how often the headaches occur, how long they last, and any signs and symptoms that occur before, during, or after the headaches. Your doctor will also perform physical and neurological exams to look for signs of an illness that may be causing the headache.

Tests your doctor may order include a MRI scan and a MRA scan . Both imaging tests show the tissues and arteries in the brain. Skull X-rays are not helpful. Unless the child has lost consciousness while having headaches or a seizure is suspected, an EEG is not needed. If a patient arrives at a hospitals emergency room, a CT scan is often ordered.

    Migraine And Celiac Disease

Only one study suggests that migraine in celiac disease patients may be relieved by treating celiac disease. Until now, the primary treatment for celiac disease is a gluten-free diet . The effect of a gluten-free diet was investigated in a small study with four patients with both migraine and celiac disease . In one patient migraine completely resolved. In the other three patients, a reduction in migraine frequency, duration, and intensity was reported. This suggests that a gluten-free diet used by celiac disease patients with migraine may give relief in both celiac disease and migraine. However, it should be noticed that only four patients were included in this study. Larger, well-designed studies to confirm these results are warranted.

Best Options For Treating Migraine When You Have Gi Symptoms

Paula: Let’s say we have somebody who is dealing with a lot of nausea and vomiting, and they’re losing time from work and family. And because of this nausea and vomiting, they can’t swallow their oral medication. What are their best treatment options?

Dr. Starling: First, it’s not just that individuals that have significant nausea and vomiting are unable to sometimes keep their medication down, but even if they keep it down, it may actually not be working very well. They’re unable to absorb that medication effectively. Or it may take too long, and so someone doesn’t have benefit from their triptan medication for two hours or more when they should have had benefit within one hour.

We need to treat the symptoms, but we also need to get the medications into the bloodstream more effectively. To treat the symptoms, there are a lot of anti-nausea medications that can be used, and some are actually effective not only for nausea but also for the head pain itself. We call these neuroleptic medications, and they include things like prochlorperazine, promethazine, and metoclopramide.

In addition, the triptan medications, which are the gold standard for as-needed treatment of Migraine headaches, usually come in oral tablets, but those are useless if we’re throwing up or it’s not well-absorbed.

Those are all different formulations that can more effectively get into the bloodstream and completely bypass the gastrointestinal tract.

Paula: And these act more quickly than oral medications?

Role For Gut Barrier Function In Migraine

This overview of the literature suggests the existence of a rather strong relationship between GI disorders and migraine. One of the links between inflammatory diseases and migraine are enhanced pro-inflammatory immune responses . In intestinal disorders characterized by an increased intestinal permeability like IBS, IBD, and celiac disease enhanced pro-inflammatory immune responses have been reported . Enhanced levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 1 in serum of migraine patients have been found during migraine attacks . These cytokines can act on the nociceptors of the trigeminal nerve, causing migraine. Also statistical significant associations have been reported between migraine and a wide range of inflammatory disorders like asthma, obesity, metabolic syndrome, allergies, and GI diseases . A strong trigger of pro-inflammatory immune responses is the leakage of lipopolysaccharides from the intestinal lumen into the circulation. Enhanced levels of LPS can enter the circulation when the intestinal permeability is increased . Depending on genetic susceptibility, pro-inflammatory responses can occur in different parts of the body, e.g., in case of migraine on the nociceptors of the trigeminal nerve.
