My Journey With Chronic Illness | Migraine Associated Vertigo, Vestibular Migraines, Chronic Illness

You should be prepared for an uphill battle to be approved for benefits due to;disability for migraines. Unfortunately, many claims for chronic migraines are denied, especially when they lack medical evidence demonstrating that a persons pain severely impacts their ability to cope, work, or perform healthy activities in everyday life.;

Everything You Need To Know About Migraine Symptoms Signs Causes Diagnosis And Treatments

A migraine is one of the common headaches that usually felt as a throbbing or pulsating pain on one side of the head. A majority of people also have symptoms such as increased sensitivity to light or sound, feeling sick, and being sick. Migraine is a common body condition that affects around one in every five women and around one in every fifteen men. Episodes of migraine usually begin in early teenage and continue during adulthood.

Health professionals have further divided migraine into several types. These include;

Migraine without aura It is one of the most common type. It involves the sudden onset of a migraine attack that happens without the specific warning signs

Migraine with aura This type shows specific warning signs just before the beginning of the migraine attack, such as seeing flashing lights

Silent migraine It can be described as migraine aura without a headache. This type involves an aura or other associated symptoms, but without the development of a headache.

Some people tend to have migraine attacks frequently, up to several times a week, while others only have a migraine occasionally.

Migraine headaches can cause various symptoms before, during, and after the attack. Not all people experience all symptoms, and your migraine may be entirely different than a friends.

Symptoms can come on gradually or suddenly. Sometimes they start overnight, causing people to wake up with a migraine, but not always, the Mayo Clinic notes. Basically, every migraine headache is slightly different, and theres no cut and dry list of symptoms that pertain to everyone.

All that said, there are a number of ways migraines differ from regular headaches. If you experience any of these symptoms, youre likely suffering from a migraine and not something thatll go away by popping some Advil.

Feeling Guilty About Missing Work

I feel guilty all of the time like that and watch the clock. Missed work yesterday and was sick as a dog, and trudged into work this morning hung-over from all my meds and the pain from the day before

Wow, this describes my battle a few times a week. That guilt of thinking that you are almost well enough to be at work vs the fear and guilt that going into work would mean you are unwell tomorrow as well. I find it very hard to make a decision

Im a teacher and unfortunately when I miss a day, it affects all the staff. This, of course, makes me feel guilty so I push through as much as I can. Today, I made it through the whole day with a mild migraine because I felt too guilty asking to leave. I know I desperately need to sleep and take care of myself, but the guilt of taking a sick day is almost worse

Making Reasonable Accommodations For Migraine Sufferers

Topiramate – My Experience – Cervicogenic Headaches/Migraines

Once an employee requests an accommodation, its up to the employer to work with them to find solutions and put them in place so the employee can continue to do their job. Some of the most common accommodations for migraine sufferers include:

  • Offering flexible hours.;If the job doesnt require an employee to be there at a certain time, consider flex time. Flexible hours can allow the employee to work when they are able to without worrying about punching a clock.
  • Allowing them to work from home.;This doesnt mean theyll be working when they are dealing with a migraine. What work-from-home does allow, though, is the ability to control their environment when they feel a migraine coming on. This could help them reduce the severity of migraines or prevent them altogether.
  • Moving their desk. Some migraines are triggered by lighting, smells, or noise. Simply moving their workspace or altering the environment a little can help a lot.
  • Creating migraine-friendly break rooms. Migraine sufferers may find relief in a dark, quiet room. If you have the space for it, create a migraine-friendly break room. This can be as simple as a comfortable couch in a dimly-lit room.

The most important thing an employer can do for an employee is to be willing to listen to their needs. Instead of assuming you know what they need, ask them. This can help you start a dialogue about what would be useful and how you can meet their needs so that they can do their job.

Migraine is a fluctuating and episodic condition and its impact on you at work may vary. Keeping your employer informed of any relevant changes to your condition or treatment can help them to provide you with the necessary support that you need. Your doctor and Occupational Health can support you in this process. You may also want to provide your employer with The Migraine Trusts website and information resources to help debunk any misconceptions or confusion about the condition.

Some Pointers If Youve Decided To Talk To Your Employer About Your Headaches

Claire Thomson

If you are a headache or migraine sufferer and have made the decision to discuss your medical condition with your employer, you may not know where to begin.

Its ultimately your call on how or even if you want to talk to your boss about your condition, and you have no obligation to do so. However, if you decide this is a conversation you want to have, here are some pointers on how you could possibly approach this discussion.

Telling your boss about headaches or migraines at work can be stressful because there can be a stigma attached to them, says Lisa Brateman, LCSW, a psychotherapist and relationship specialist who practices in New York City. Her suggestions:

Leave Shame at the Door. First things first: Dont feel ashamed about your condition, Brateman says.; You can offer just as much as someone who doesnt suffer from headaches or migraines, she says.

. You might think through how often you get headaches or migraines and when they are debilitating. Does your boss need advance warning? Possibly, if you get headaches often, says Brateman: You want to warn them so that if you start calling in sick or not following through, you dont have to backtrack and say, This is why.

Using Migraine As An Excuse

Sick Leave Application Format, Samples & Tips for ...

If youre like me, you may have experienced a migraine attack that left you unable to stand, unable to drink water without throwing up an attack that has left you writhing on the floor.;;If you are half as sick as this, theres little doubt that a migraine attack is a VERY good reason to not go to work.

But today were not talking about someone with migraine, but someone who doesnt have migraine at all but they still use the I have a migraine excuse.

The reality is that most of the migraine patients I know will push themselves to go to work if they can, to go to that family picnic even though theyre not feeling well, to do some housework even if they have to stop and lie down every few minutes.

So although there may be migraineurs out there who use the condition to regularly skip work when they could reasonably go, I havent come across any.

So would someone without a migraine attack actually use it as an excuse? ;Sadly, it happens.

In fact, Troy Patterson, freelance writer and regular writer for and Spin Magazine actually recommends the migraine excuse to avoid embarrassing conversations.;;A woman asks,When experiencing extreme, debilitating cramps or other symptoms from menses, is it better to make up a white lie or speak the truth as to why I need to work from home?

Bill Banning Sick Notes Proposed In Ontario

This brings us to the present-day, and a new Bill proposed by Guelph MPP and the leader of Ontarios Green Party, Mike Schreiner. The Bill would see the law in Ontario changed permanently, beyond a time when the threat of COVID-19 is effectively reduced or eliminated, to ban the requirement of a doctors note in Ontario. According to Schreiner, this would not only relieve Ontario workers from the burden of getting a note while sick , it would also be a help to medical professionals in Ontario:

Im hearing from workers, but Im also hearing from health-care professionals that requiring sick notes makes absolutely no sense anytimeWhy would you require people who are sick to go to a doctors office, potentially getting other people sick, simply for an administrative requirement to get a sick noteIf were going to call frontline workers heroes, lets treat them with respect, treat them like heroes and permanently eliminate the need for sick notes, which will keep everyone safer.

While the Bill has just been introduced, well continue to monitor its progress and will provide updates as they become available.

As evidenced above, the laws around sick leave and employee rights and obligations have changed several times in recent years. It can be difficult to know what the current laws require.

Talking Candidly About How To Manage A Migraine At Work Is One Of The Best Ways To Keep A Great Employee And A Great Job

If youre the one calling in sick with a migraine, chances are your boss and co-workers understand migraines more than you might think. MRF reports that nearly 1 in 4 households includes someone with a migraine. They may know your pain personally, even if theyve never felt it physically.

What they really want to know is: when can you return to work or get your work done? What are you doing proactively to prevent migraines and reduce the frequency of your attacks? If you dont have a plan to share, you dont have a plan. And that puts them at future risk.

One of the most Common Migraine Patterns we all experience is going to bed perfectly fine and waking up in unpredictable, plan-altering pain. Morning Migraine is especially perplexing because it seems like nothing special happened during the night, or even the night before, to make this happen.

In your case and mine, its obviously not a hangover. Theres not even a wildly fun party the night before to remember, just painful consequences this morning. So why is this happening? How can you prevent another daybreak surprise this week? To find out more, check out Morning Migraine Again? 7 Tips to Wake Pain-Free.

Adopting many of these strategies can be part of the migraine-care plan you can share with your boss. Until then youll want to call in sick judiciously while minimizing the chance of a job loss.

Other Things To Think About

  • Even with treatment, you may still get migraines.
  • It may take some time to find the right medicines to help you.
  • Using medicines too often can cause rebound headaches. These are different from migraine headaches. They occur after pain medicine has worn off, which leads you to take another dose. After a while, you get a headache whenever you stop taking the medicine. Be sure to take your medicine only as your doctor prescribes.
  • If you think your headaches could be caused by depression or anxiety, be sure to let your doctor know. Treatment for these health problems may get rid of your headaches or reduce how often you have them.
  • If you think your headaches are related to stress, talk to your doctor about getting help to cope better with stress.
