How to Treat Migraines & Head Colds : How to Help a Sinus Headache

Believe it or not, soaking your feet in hot water will help your head feel better. By drawing blood to your feet, the hot-water footbath will ease pressure on the blood vessels in your head. For a really bad headache, add a bit of hot mustard powder to the water.

For a tension headache, place a hot compress on your forehead or the back on your neck. The heat will help relax knotted-up muscles in this area.

It might sound contradictory, but you can follow up the heat treatment by applying a cold compress to your forehead. Cold constricts blood vessels, and when they shrink, they stop pressing on sensitive nerves. Since headache pain sometimes originates in nerves in back of your neck, try moving the compress to the muscles at the base of your skull.

Heres an alternative to a cold compress: Soak your hands in ice water for as long as you can stand it. While your hands are submerged, repeatedly open and close your fists. This works on the same principle as an ice pack on your headthe cold narrows your dilated blood vessels.

Cold Therapy Through Food

As a dietitian, one of my favourite ways to use cold therapy aside from a cold compress is through food! A scoop of ice cream, smoothie, milkshake, or ice-cold drink may be just the thing to help lower your pain levels and keep your energy levels up.

One of my go-to drinks is my Lemon Ginger Electrolyte Drink. The ginger can help with any nausea you may feel during your episode, while the sea salt, coconut water and lemon give you a good dose of electrolytes. Honey serves to allow the electrolytes and fluid to enter your cells more easily and gives you a little boost of energy when youre feeling low.

It should be noted that some people find cold foods and beverages can actually worsen or even trigger their migraine episodes, so make sure to pay close attention to your body when trying this and any migraine treatment. We are all unique, so do what works best for you!

Whats The Best Method To Use An Ice Pack For Migraines

The first thing to know is where you apply the ice pack makes a difference in how fast relief is experienced. In the 2013 study mentioned earlier, it is recommended that using the ice pack in the form of a neck wrap placing it in the nape area can help reduce pain and discomfort from migraines.;

Applying the ice pack directly to the area of pain can also help. It is also recommended to apply the ice pack for just 1520 minutes at a time. After that, you can rest ice-free for an hour, then apply the ice pack again. You can repeat this pattern of 1520 minutes of ice, then an hour off, until the pain subsides.;

You should be able to experience four different sensations while applying ice pack to your nape or area of pain:

1 Cold

3 Aching

4 Numbness;

It is suggested to remove the ice when you get to stage 4 numbness. However, some peoples skin is more sensitive than others, so if the burning sensation you feel is too intense, you can remove the ice. Keeping the ice on for too long can damage the skin via frostbite.

Natural Migraine Headache Pain Relief With Hot Or Cold Compress

Many people who suffer from migraine headaches stop the pain of a migraine with the proper application of hot or cold compress of water. This type of pain relief is common with patients trying to avoid prescription drug use, especially for kids and pregnant women who prefers natural solutions.

Here are a few tips to help ease the ache of a migraine. While some migraineurs find comfort in cold, at least as many are more uncomfortable in the presence of cold. The same is true of heat used for pain relieffor some it helps, for others it makes the pain worse. Just test every option and find what best suits your condition.

Use a compress to apply on the head where pain is most severe. This is frequently on the temple where a large artery runs, or in front of the ear, another arterial locale. In some cases, there is a physical reason for a headache. Check for anything that is putting too much pressure on the head. This may be a ponytail or bun that is too tight or a hat or headband that has been on too long.

A good rule of thumb is to remove the ice pack once the area starts to feel numb.

Where you place your cold compress is largely up to you many people prefer applying it to their neck, while others prefer placing it on their forehead or over their eyes. The study mentioned above found that applying a cold compress directly to the neck had significant benefits, but others recommend applying ice directly to the area in pain.

Its important to be careful when applying a cold compress to delicate or sensitive skin always make sure there is a barrier between the ice or other frozen material and your skin. If you experience a significant burning sensation, remove the cold compress and wrap it in a towel before using again.

Popular Hot For Migraine Options To Consider

It is pretty common for people with migraine to experience neck pain with their attacks. I have tightness, pain and a spasming in my neck muscles. Heat feels amazing on these painful areas. If I get it early enough, it can really limit the pain I feel. A heating pad or microwaveable option are the first things I reach for.

I frequently like to have just heat all the way around my head. I have a heating pad that I like to say heats up to lava temperature. My favorite!! Its also long enough to wrap all the way around my head!! It produces moist heat which makes it feel wonderful as it cradles my head and presses heat into my cheeks, forehead and eyes. Because its weighted, it provides some wonderful pressure as well.;

Many people talk about taking hot showers when they are having an attack as well. I like the idea of it and it feels great when I do it. But I have a ton of hair and the idea of trying to dry it when I have an attack is more than I can deal with.;

I also have a Huggaroo neck wrap that is wonderful for when I am not lying in my bed. I have the unscented one, but there is also one that is lightly scented with lavender. The specific electric heating pad I have for my neck and shoulders is also helpful for when I am sitting up and working or watching a show on TV.;

Preparing For A Migraine

    Many migraine sufferers have a running list of things that could potentially spark a migraine headache, with weather changes serving as one of the most commonly reported migraine triggers. In fact, one survey1 found that 43 percent of migraine patients listed weather changes as a trigger, second only to stress .
