Triggers For Eye Pain

Using Ice For a Migraine Get Rid of a Migraine Without Medicine

Some of the common triggers for migraines and the accompanying eye pain are stress, flashing lights, poor sleep, loud noises, and changes in weather. One MyMigraineTeam member said, The only trigger I can identify so far is rain. Every darn time!

Food sensitivities can also cause migraines. The most common food triggers include aged cheese, nuts and nut butters, tomatoes, chocolate, caffeine, and onions and garlic. Certain food additives, such as artificial sweeteners, monosodium glutamate , and nitrates also can trigger migraines.

MyMigraineTeam members report a variety of food sensitivities that can bring on migraines and eye pain. Many members find that their food triggers change with age, and that they have to go through a process of trial and error to eliminate foods that cause migraines. According to one member, Peanut butter was never a trigger. Then suddenly I got a migraine every time I ate it, so I have avoided it for about 10 years. I love it, so I have slowly been adding it back in and it is not triggering.

Alcohol sensitivity can also cause migraines. Between the rain and a thimbleful of champagne and a few sips of chardonnay, I was sick, a MyMigraineTeam member said.

How Do Mymigraineteam Members Treat Eye Pain

Lying down in a dark, quiet room is a time-tested way to treat migraine symptoms, including eye pain. Applying heat to the affected area using a warm compress or mask can help treat eye pain. I tried a heat-activated, warming eye mask, which has eased a little pain, reported one MyMigraineTeam member.

Ice can also help numb the face and reduce eye pain. One member recommends frozen peas, as they allow the ice pack to form to the face. Others have found ice hats or ice helmets fleece hats that have pockets that hold ice packs helpful. These hats allow you to place multiple ice packs snugly against the affected areas. Holding an ice pack isnt the best! Not much helps me, but this item is well worth the price! one MyMigraineTeam member said.

MyMigraineTeam members use essential oils, such as lavender oil and peppermint oil, to ease eye pain. When I am having a migraine I do use Japanese peppermint oil on the base of my head, neck, and shoulders. It gets quite hot, but it sometimes relieves pain, a member said.

Some members find that using a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation unit helps ease eye and face pain. The TENS unit is placed on the surface of the skin. It sends electrical signals to disrupt the pain signals that nerves send out. According to one MyMigraineTeam member, I have used the TENS unit for a couple of weeks. I no longer have trigeminal pain 24/7 and have averaged one migraine a week.

Does Drinking Hot Water Help Headaches

Headaches thrive on dehydration, so grab a glass of water to extinguish that ache. Water increases blood flow and oxygenation to the brain. But drink room temperature or warm water, as cold or iced water can exacerbate the headache or cause an unwanted brain freeze, and we all know those are horrid.

Does Your Moms Advice Hold Up

  • Cold therapy as a migraine relief measure was first documented as early as 1849.
  • Exactly how cold works to ease migraine pain is poorly understood.
  • Ice could contribute to relief through the vascular system, the neurologic system or the endocrine system.

When we asked you in our migraine community about what Mom taught you about migraine care, a lot of the motherly advice included using a cool cloth or ice pack during migraine attacks to help soothe the pain.

So that got us thinking: Why does a cooling agent feel good for some migraine sufferers? Heres a look at what the research says on using ice packs for migraines.

How Can You Keep Your Head Cool When Youre Asleep

Ice Packs for Migraine Relief

There are a couple of options to keep your head cool overnight that are a lot safer than using an ice pack.

Use a Bedroom Fan

Bedroom fans may not be as effective as an ice pack for injuries but they can help reduce your core temperature and keep you cool.

My advice is to pick a silent bedroom fan so youre not disturbed by the whirling or spinning noise of the fan.

Use a Cooling Pillow

Cooling pillows are great. I have one myself that I use in the summer or if I have a headache and want to soothe it as I drift off.

There are a few different types, but most have a cool gel section that stays cool while being completely safe to lay on.

What Makes For The Most Effective Ice Pack For Headache

That depends on the situation and the user. In general, ice packs for headaches containing water are not flexible, which means they can’t wrap around your noggin. Many disposable chemical cold packs lose their heat quickly, although one of our finds claims it stays cool for eight hours.

Most gel-based ice packs, while easily conforming around the head and neck, don’t freeze and therefore warm up too quickly.

If you are experiencing frequent attacks, it’s time to invest in a more serious ice pack for headache and Migraine. Rotating ice packs simply isn’t practical at this point continuous relief is necessary.

With wearable ice packs, it’s also easy to get up and go to the bathroom or get a glass of water without removing it. Wearable hats and wraps keep ice in place while you sit, walk, carry something or try to sleep. . Many can be used on other parts of the body as well.

    Getting The Correct Diagnosis

According to the International Classification of Headache Disorders, the official name for ice pick headache is primary stabbing headache. The condition is characterized by intense, brief, stabbing headaches often described as an ice pick feeling.

Dr. VanderPluym says stabbing head pain may be caused by a lot of different problems. But with ice pick headache, there are no other symptoms present beyond the pain itself. Dr. VanderPluym notes that if youre getting tearing or redness of the eye, a runny or stuffy nose, swelling or flushing of the face, then you might not have ice pick headache.

When we talk about primary stabbing headache, we are talking about a primary headache disorder, Dr. VanderPluym says. It can happen more commonly in patients who have migraine, but it is not necessarily a symptom of migraine.

Because these brief, stabbing pains can also be seen with other more serious conditions, people who experience these head pains should be evaluated by a qualified clinician to be properly evaluated.

You Can Wake Up With Frostbite Or Ice Burn

If you thought frostbite or ice burn was something you could only get from spending days outside in subzero conditions, youre wrong.

Its actually very possible to get one of these painful conditions from an ice pack if its left on your skin for too long.

Ice burn starts when something cold has been in contact with the skin for so long that water in the skin cells starts to freeze.

This reduces blood flow to the area and can cause considerable damage. The symptoms include blistering, pain, numbness, a tingly feeling, pain, and a headache.

As far as safety precautions against ice burn and frostbite go while most manufactured ice packs should be safe its not worth the risk of leaving it on your head when you sleep.

If youre making your own ice pack never let the ice come into contact with your skin. Wrap the ice in a layer or two and move it at regular intervals.

Myth : Its Okay To Apply Ice To Your Bare Skin

Regardless of how little time you leave ice on the skin, its not a good idea to place it directly on there in the first place. Using ice or an ice pack directly on the skin can cause severe frostbite in minutes with long-lasting effects. When ice comes in contact with skin, it forms ice crystals on skin cells and decreases blood flow, depriving the tissues of oxygen that produces underlying and permanent damage. Instead, use a protective layer such as a cloth or a sleeve into which you can insert your hot or cold pack. Alternatively, you could use direct to skin products such as clay wraps or oat bags that are made with a soft fabric.

Small Enough To Keep In Your Pocket The Migrasoothe Roll

Getting hit with a migraine while you’re at work or out running errands can be awful, since you don’t have access to the ice packs, eye masks, and other supplies you have waiting for you at home. MigraSoothe Roll-On is small enough to keep in your office drawer, your car, or even in your pocket, so you always have it when you need it. This roll-on uses a combination of peppermint and lavender essential oils to deliver a cooling, refreshing sensation.

Using MigraSoothe is easy just apply it to pressure points, such as your temples, wrist, and neck. The roll-on design keeps your hands clean, and the essential oils can help to take the edge off of a migraine. I find many essential oils too powerful and overwhelming, but I’ve used this roll-on for years without it bothering me.

The earlier you can apply this, the better. While this product doesn’t stop a migraine in its tracks, I have found that it eases the symptoms when applied at the migraine’s onset. I often use it and then apply an ice pack, which seems to work well.

One Amazon shopper writes, “I tried this at the recommendation of my aunt and could not believe the relief I got from this simple mixture of peppermint oil and essential oils. Obviously it does not remove the pain 100% but I’ve found it to be a great alternative. If I put it on my temples, it feels like it is cooling and drawing out the throbbing pain.”

    Background Information

Migraine headaches can be absolutely debilitating and incapacitating. Only someone who has had a migraine can truly understand how painful it is. Migraines are intense headaches that can last up to 2 or 3 days. In addition to the throbbing pain, migraine headaches often come with extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Other symptoms include pain on one side of the head, nausea, and vomiting. In some cases, there are precursors that let the individual know that a migraine headache is about to happen. This is called an aura. Auras can range from things such as having a tingling feeling in your arm or leg, numbness, or blind spots in your eye.

In this case, the null hypothesis would be that submerging your hands and feet into ice water would do nothing. Meaning that ice water does not help combat the symptoms of migraine headaches. The alternative hypothesis is that the ice water treatment does help alleviate the symptoms of migraines. Scientists can choose to either accept or reject the null hypothesis.

Do I Apply Ice Or Heat For The Relief Of My Headaches/migraines

    Headache Hat Review

When you are suffering from a headache or a migraine you will do just about anything to try to ease them. The most common thing that people will reach for after a pain killer will be an ice pack or a heat bag. So which is more effective to help relieve a headache/migraine?

    Interestingly the answer is.neither.

The most common cause of headaches and migraines are dysfunctions in the upper 3 joints of the neck. Due to the chronic nature of these conditions, ice and/or heat will not help to alleviate these joints. However, one of the biggest things that is important during a headache/migraine attack is comfort! Therefore if you feel as though ice or heat is comforting or soothing, it certainly will not make the pain worse and by making yourself feel more at ease, this will in fact help your headache/migraine pass quicker.

The most important thing when applying an ice pack or heat bag is to never place them on the front of your neck. You have a lot of important structures in through the front of the neck that should not be affected by either ice or heat. Also, due to the top 3 joints because the cause of most headaches/migraines, if you place an ice pack or heat bag on the back of your neck, often it will cause your head to poke forwards, further encouraging these headache/migraine inducing dysfunctions. Therefore when applying ice/heat, applying it to the lower neck/shoulder area for maximum benefit and comfort.
